I just showed this to my husband. Thanks for sharing!! We didn't do surgery, I just let the prid drawing salve draw out the infection. I'm hopeful she won't have a relapse!! Thanks for sharing!!
She did so good and you did too! Bless you both! I have not seen this before although I have heard of it and seen it in quail. But i have never seen the huge swollen part! What is the core made of? How does it form and (why, I guess)? Great job on the sterilization info as well.
I don't think there is one specific cause.. most likely opportunistic. I think this came from my ramp. its old and needs to be replaced (on the agenda this coming weekend) probably a splinter that got infected. It's sort of like a boil. only they don't pus like a human would. it develops a hard core. so you soak and get it out. it will heal by secondary intention from the inside out.
usually opportunistic. maybe she stepped on something and cut it.. maybe a splinter from a roost or the ramp. but its a staph infection.. so like a boil in a human when they get a wound or puncture..
some of the pain meds are toxic to chickens.. if its one that has Pramoxine HCl as the painkiller ingredient, and that is ok. I just prefer none.. because you never know how they will react and if its safe otherwise.

Prid does work too! I've just had better longterm success with this.. and of course finding the root cause!
Fascinating! That chicken was amazingly behaved! The care you give your chicken blows my mind!
Yes, thanks.. they are my pets that provide me with breakfast! I treat them well because they feed us so well.
You named her well, even in the dark of the coop I knew which one she must be!
We call her Amy for short. but Amathyst is her name
