Second locate the largest adjustable wrench you have in your tool box to remove the device. A method of removing a muzzle device you well not see on the Brownells channel.

    I built a form 1 6" titanium suppressor that is surprisingly quiet for its size. I've had people comment on how quiet it is for the size and then they are amazed when they find out I built it myself (I didn't physically machine each part, more assembly than anything). I used tool steel NASCAR valve spring retainers as the baffles as they are shaped very similar to a baffle already and fit the body without modification. With titanium spacers, mount, and end cap it comes in under 16oz. You can shoot it on a 16" gun without ear pro. On my 5.56 BRN-180s, its still comfortable to the ear but I still wear ear pro with it just in case.
    The Mod-1 looks to have a bigger internal volume than mine so I'm not surprised that it would work well for its size. The industry standard threading is a big plus. I just bought an adapter for my can so I can use that thread pitch for other mounting options. Glad to see more companies embracing that.
    My next build is a .30 cal can that will be a tank. Its a stainless steel tube that is welded to a Surefire QD mount that was cut out of a Surefire Warden and welded to the tube. I got a guy that welds roll cages to TIG weld the mount in place. It will probably weigh 2lbs but it will be bomb proof for use on a 16" .308 and whatever else I can throw at it.

    • @oldscratch3535
      @oldscratch3535 2 года назад +2

      @@peepo-the-boomer SD Tactical is where I bought all of my stuff. I'd be careful ordering anything from the companies that sell anything that even looks like an internal baffle. A lot of those guys got popped by the ATF not too long ago.
      SD Tactical only sells tubes, spacers, mounts, and muzzle devices so you're pretty safe ordering from him. He's been around for years too.
      As far as baffles, I use valve spring retainers. I found some NASCAR ones that fit my tube perfectly and have the proper hole size. There are plenty of tutorials online.
      Just be careful about what you're ordering if you don't have an approved Form 1 yet. If you're just going to build one without a Form 1 then you should probably try to get a trusted friend to order some parts while you order others.

      @DimaProk 2 года назад +3

      Interesting, I got their tube a long time ago, they used to use these freeze plugs for buffles and now the valve spring retainers huh? I find it so ironic that all these DYI form 1 suppressors all using car parts, first it was oil filters than freeze plugs and now valve spring retainers LOL. Did you get titanium spacers from SD Tactical too? I see on eBay these NASCAR valve spring retainers are available in titanium too. What diameter do you need?

    • @oldscratch3535
      @oldscratch3535 2 года назад +3

      @@DimaProk I originally used stainless steel tubing for spacers. I just recently switched to titanium. That brought the can down to 12.8 ounces. The whole can is titanium except for the baffles.
      My last 3 baffles are actually still freeze plugs that I formed into cones. I use a wider spacing at the rear and the spacing gradually gets smaller as you get to the front with the last 3 baffles having no spacers at all. The wall on the freeze plugs gives you just enough spacing so I left them in instead of cutting tiny titanium spacers and using valve spring retainers. I put the titanium end cap in my lathe and turned the inside into a cone shape as well to make one last "baffle".
      I personally would not buy titanium valve spring retainers b/c they will likely erode much faster than the hardened tool steel ones. The steel ones are still very light, but way tougher. I shoot mine on a 10.5" 5.56 with no problems. You also seem to get a lot of sparking with all titanium baffles. If you want to use titanium baffles then at least make the first 2 baffles out of tool steel. Those take the brunt of the blast.
      For the 1.5" O.D. tubing the I.D. is 1.36" +/- .001". You will need a 1.36" diameter valve spring retainer with a 6-7mm valve stem opening for use on a 5.56 gun with no modifications.

      @@oldscratch3535 Thanks so much for the response. At 18.1oz mine is too damn heavy (titanium body and end caps), it's 8" though for 30 cal. But mainly I really really want one for my 9mm PC9 carbine, I missed out on most recent SilencerCo promotion where if you buy one can $800 value you get free Octane in 9mm or 45. What delayed me from jumping on the deal is that I wanted a user serviceable can in 30 cal because I like to shoot cast bullets I want to be able to take apart and clean it and I didn't see any available and in few days the Omega 300 were sold out! It was on sale too for $800 later it appeared again at 900 but also got sold out in a day. I might still buy the Octane because I want a really light can for 9mm and it can handle 300 blackout. The fact that yours down to 12.8 oz that's incredible, I wonder what an 8" would weight after reduction, well it's only one way to find out. P.S. I have a lathe too.

    Regarding the statement that "rifle cans" don't need to be taken apart to clean, I have a different view of that. It depends on what calibers you are talking about. 5.56 cans generally never need to be taken apart. Other calibers though it's a much different story. Bigger, or slower, or less pressure cartridges will definitely leave a whole lot more behind and thus cleaning would be a good idea. Do they have to be taken apart? No. They can be cleaned at home but cleaned none the less.

      @@VSO_Gun_Channel While I don't have the 'luxury' or experience killing a suppressor having a (non maintained) can could possibly contribute to an 'untimely death'. That said there are a hundred ways not related to any of this that could harm a suppressor. That said if a person has so much junk in the can that when they shake it carbon comes out the ends isn't really a good thing. Over on Sniper's Hide there is a really long thread about cleaning sealed cans, complete with LOTS of photos of cans that definitely needed cleaning up. Once every year or two (depending on the amount of shooting) it certainly won't hurt. For most of us I think the idea of an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure... I weighed and cleaned two of my cans. The 5.56 didn't hardly gain any weight despite having a much larger round count. The 30 cal can, having maybe half the rounds of the 5.56 had 2-3 times (or more) of the carbon build up...Cleaning is not a requirement for anyone, but for me I will invest 10-20 bucks every other year just because I can.

      More skeptical still of the 416 Stainless, 5.56 SBR fire will chew through that real quick-like, I'd compare this against the YHM Turbo K, another cost-effective can that has good performance but also offers an Inconel 718 blast baffle.

      @@KidCorporate I don't think I'd buy anything from Witt Machine. IIRC they're claiming 136dB at the ear with their Canooter Valve. The Vox S is 136.4dB at the ear with subsonic .300 blackout from a bolt action. They're lying peddlers of cheap products, and they're going to cost people their hearing.

    it's too bad that camera sound recording always tries to mediate sound levels and you can't ever hear the true differences but you can get a good idea. If you listen to the suppressed shots, you can still hear everything going but you have to try to extrapolate, the initial impression is something akin to the John Wick terminal walkway scene where suppressed 9mm sounded like unattainable whispers.
    Although this can isn't that quiet, it's a lot less than one would expect and is very impressive. Thumbs 👍
