Surely this scene plus some others is the reason why Gillian Anderson won the Best Actress Emmy award during Season 4. She always was sublime in her emotional scenes, not over doing it.
fruitofthejoot she actually put forward “Memento Mori” for comsideration
Such a painfully honest scene between these two amazing actors
Because as Scully has said before to her therapist, she doesn't want Mulder to think that he has to protect her. It's both about Scully's pride and about being a women in world full of men with her profession. What Scully doesn't understand is that it is a natural instinct for Mulder to want to protect her. That's just Mulder.
That's a man in love.
Two actual cases of peak human condition.
Mulder is a great person.
Because it's love, that is what Scully is afraid of from deepest of her heart.
That’s what I don’t get about all of that political this & that, gotta make a point stuff. What, in any way, is wrong about a friend caring for you? Everyone talks so much about racism, sexism and what not and suddenly everyone forgets that humanism exists.
One of the best acted scenes during the whole show - very close to the performance of them in the final scene of "Never Again". Love season 4 so much!
As always so well acted between these two. So many scenes and one line conversations were more about their relationship than what the actual topic was.
I love how Mulder knows Scully so well, and even when she hides things from him because of his 'secret' connection to her he always knows something is wrong :') Moving scene
"I'm going home." Beautifully executed line.
when i watch these season 3 and 4,5,6 episodes i feel even more passionately that Chris Carter needs to end this show somewhere and give proper closure to these 2 characters, by proper I mean a beautiful, happy ending TOGETHER. I don't care what the 2020 wokes say or think about this relationship. I grew up with this show and they taught me what love is...I never saw 2 people love, protect, value, and respect one another than Mulder and Scully did...and they deserved a happily ever after. Breaking them up over and over, separating them, it's in the writer's hands and it is cruel for them to keep repeating it. I hope Gillian does agree to come back eventually and they beautifully conclude MS in 3-4 memorable episodes or 1 beautiful movie...we fans deserve it. Mulder and Scully do too.
I agree with every single word you said.
👏👏👏👏👏
What do the 2020 wokes say about them? Sorry, I’m not up to date.
I heard someone say that the show should have ended at season 8 and then maybe had one more movie after that. I sorta agree with that. Season 9 was kinda just... idk. Ridiculous? At least to me. The plot just felt so far off from what the show once was. The only saving grace of season 9 was Mulder and Scully being shown as a couple (in X-files fashion of course.) In the last two episodes. And the way they decided to close the season with a almost perfect parallel to 1x01 where Scully is laying on Mulders bed and he's sitting on the floor with his head layed back on the bed. It's basically perfect and beautiful. But season 9 was really the worst season by far. I felt like I was watching a spin off show or something. The end of season 8 was pretty good. Scully, Mulder and William being a happy family together just felt so right. But again, they didn't really show their romance at all and that sucks but I'm fairly certain that the show could go on for another 10 seasons and we wouldn't see much of a romance between the two. It's just CC's way (unfortunately) even though they have a damn child together but WHATEVER.
@@samthelion3925 I don't need much romance from mulder and Scully. I shipped them but their chemistry was enough for me to let my imagination do the rest...I wanted hugs, hand holding, and I really enjoyed the angst and jealousy on both sides...I lived for Mulder protecting her and crying about her and Scully getting jealous when other women merely entered the picture...I think they shouldn't have gone for a baby angle...if they did it should've been the happy end...period...also I think they deserved a baby after a proper wedding and proposal of some kind ,not an ambiguous sort of relationship. That's just my humble opinion. Ultimately I feel like the show had a lot going for it especially their Chemistry and they could've dragged it out much longer using their sexual tension and angst and all and not gone such a bizarre route like you said in s9
Such a strong scene. You can see Scully’s struggle with her beliefs, her relationship and her fears. Love season 4 of the X files.
I disagree with some saying Mulder was too hard on her in this scene... Mulder knows, and understands, that Scully needs someone to be hard on her every once in a while. Scully would rather want someone to tell the honest truth, then to have someone walk on eggshells and pretend everything is ok, when she knows it's not. Mulder knows that she respects, and wants, the brutal truth- as does he.. They would both rather have someone say something that makes them scream and cry, then to have someone tell a lie to their face.
This scene really annoyes me for one reason. Mulder always demanded Scully to be honest with him and tell him the truth. But he himself often wasn't honest with her, he concealed a lot of things her. He didn't tell her the truth. :-(
Lami After seeing the Emily episode, I agree.... His heart was in the right place, but his head wasn't. Mulder has kept a lot from Scully, some of which he should have told her...
And you're also forgetting that Mulder just wants to protect her. He's kept things from her because he's seen her pain and it kills him. We have to remember that Scully has yet to properly lose Mulder (S7) the way Mulder has already lost Scully at this point (S2). Yes she came back after her abduction but Mulder was a total mess until she did, hell even when she did he was still a mess, and his protectiveness has ramped up with her at this point. It's that tender, devoted chivalrous side that comes out in Mulder. Yes he greatly respects and admires her as a person and partner. He considered her as an equal in a mans world but he's also male and still wants to save her. That's just Mulder and his feelings for her.
rochey1010 I agree
The issue for me is that this moment seems out of character. He was the one to tell Scully he didn’t believe she would die when she was ready to give up. His faith convinced her to fight, but in this scene he’s pretty much like, “Yeah, I think you’re going to die.” Very uncharacteristic of this believer in the impossible. And Scully needs his faith right now-and honestly the viewers need his faith right now because they’re scared for Scully and need someone to say she will be okay-so he’s really dropping the ball.
I love the “is that what you think I want to hear?” exchange because it speaks to his respect for her and his need to be challenged by her, but his “If you hide the truth, you’re working against me” line is very self-indulgent and also highly hypocritical seeing as he’s lying to her at that very moment about her ova being extracted. He calls her out every time she keeps something from him but doesn’t hold himself to the same standard. I totally understand his reasons and I’m not saying he should have told her right away or right now, but he kept it from her longer than necessary and he absolutely knew the risks and implications, no matter what he claims later.
I love Mulder and Scully and do love parts of this scene, but I just wanted to explain why it irked many fans-myself included-the way it did.
Someone in 2020 ?? That was very painful , but true 😪
Me! 🙋🏼♀️
This conversation between Mulder and Scully had a double meaning. By calling her out on her lying to him, he's telling her not to deny what's really going on between them. She's realizing that her fear of dying is linked to her attachment to Mulder. That's why she's unable to face the fact she might die from this. Because it would mean she would have to admit how she really feels about Mulder. She's been denying her feelings for him as a defense/coping mechanism for what happened to her and self-preservation. He decides to confront her about this because he is now aware that she desires him sexually after what happened with Eddie Van Blundht. He knows that things are changing between them.
That's pretty insightful. Thanks.
That's right. I didn't think of it that way.
as for whether she would have allowed herself to be kissed or not, it remained a mystery, because Mulder himself broke in and Edie never kissed her, judging by her face, she was clearly confused and did not know how to react when he approached her with a kiss, I think she fell into a stupor and did not know how to react At the moment , she wasn 't ready for her and Mulder 's relationship to become close .
This is during Scully's struggle with cancer. The guy saw visions of the murder victims because he was dying. Scully saw one of those visions of the latest victim. It scared her and she didn't want to believe seeing the victim meant she was certainly going to die of her cancer. So she didn't want to tell Mulder
Love scene,Gillian! Beautifully acted
This scene doesn't tell anything besides Mulder's care and concern for Scully
I remember this scene, I love it.
one of my favourite scenes of the show
I Love this scence so much. Thanks for posting.
This exchange hits hard.
they are both afraid of not being able to explain something
i want to believe
this conversation is underrated
Great scene! Just watched the episode :D
Hiding the truth it’s a touchy subject & topic.
The best seasons are the 5-7 first ones.
Does anyone know what Scully says at the end?
I'm going home.
@@lami7904 thanks

What episode is this from please?
+Kth thank you 😊
Which season?
Season 4
He overreacted a bit, he was too hard. Poor Scully. :(
Mulder's terrified though. He says it to her later that he fears the same thing - that Scully will die and he'll lose her and there's nothing he can do to stop it, nothing to fight, no quest. And for Mulder to have no quest is devastating. He's always been rebellious, determined and never will give up even if he's down for the count.
It was always about searching for Samantha but when Scully was abducted and became the x-file, His quest and Scully became one, and since then he's been more protective than ever with her. Remember Mulder went through this back in season 2 when Scully was taken and he was a complete mess and consumed with the need not only to find her but to make someone pay. He got her back though but this time it's not aliens or shadowy men that he can focus on. This time it's a very human disease called cancer and Mulder knows he's powerless to stop that. They both are.
Mulder comes down hard on her here because she's hiding the truth from him, and that puts him more in the dark than ever, and with that truth she's hiding becomes: It's worse than we thought, i'm not ok and i am going to die. And later on we see this when Mulder is in hiding and is literally doubled over breathless when he comes out of hiding to see Scully in the hospital after she collapses, and she's hooked up to numerous machines in the last stages of her cancer. It's that fear come to life right in front of him and he loves her so much, so how can he say goodbye?
rochey1010 In the end Mulder did stop it, though. Or at least helped significantly by finding that chip.
Yes ‘I hope that’s the truth’ as if she was lying about what her doctor said about her cancer status? Comes off as very low, I hope CC meant ‘I hope (the doctors) are right.’
LAUREN I always interpreted as the latter-that he hoped she was okay. Still, Mulder is such a believer in the impossible that this response felt so out of character. He was basically saying, “I don’t believe you’re okay and I think you’re dying.” When he said the exact opposite in “Momento Mori.” This scene was well-acted...but it wasn’t well written.
Completely disagree. He wasn't hard on her at all. He said what he needed to as gently as he could. They both know what's going on and it clearly pains them both but it's hard for them to deal with something they just can't fight.
say what you want. i do not care.
yes, i am correct.
why do they want to sqoaut on this earth?
r\ DR said i was fine.
