- Dudley Moore and trio perform Lullaby of Birdland by George Shearing, Magdalene College, Oxford in the 1950s. I was given a tape recording from a show 'The Birds' which Dudley provided the music for by Brian Harrell who I met at concert in Oxford many years ago. I believe Brian directed it.
I transferred it to computer before my cassette tape got chewed!
Dudley plays in an Erroll Garner style, showing at a young age mastery and great musicality.
I was very fortunate that Dudley invited me to meet him in London in 1999. I had dedicated an original piece and a transcription of his music to Bedazzled to him. I transcribed his album Songs Without Words meticulously for Faber in 2011. He was incredibly generous, kind and encouraging to me.
You can hear my beautiful and jazzy new piano Piano Concerto recorded by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra here. The opening is I think inspired Dudley’s music.

Dudley was such a genius and a GIANT of entertainment.
This rendition of ‘birdland’ has overtones of Bach, Errol Garner and stride,
A lovable genius, in my humble opinion.
Thanks for posting this. The Errol Garner influence is so strong at this stage of his career. Lovely to hear. A peerless musician, still greatly missed nearly 20 years on
Dudley was so talented. Actor, comedian, musician...etc. he passed away far too young. I loved his antics with Peter Cook. Dudley was a wonderful bloke. God bless him.
Impeccable as always Dudley Moore... what a talent...
Thanks so much for this. I'd never heard this one from Dudley before. Marvelous use of the Erroll Garner style. I miss him. A glorious talent.
Absolutely Marvellous !. Just A Wonderful Musician.
On a rainy day and dog asleep in front of the fire.. Superb. Thanks for posting.
I always loved Peter & Dudley's comedy when I was a child, but it took time for the music to become clear to me. I adore Dudley's playing and taste now.
I miss you Dud ..xx
Dudley Moore performed beautifully at LA's, Hollywood Bowl on a Summer Jazz series evening a few moons ago... & Dudley was Delightful ......
I saw Dudley Moore perform at the Rainbow Room, atop the RCA building, back in 1962. It was just when "Beyond the Fringe" appeared on Broadway, which is why Moore was in Manhattan. The play and his piano playing were great!
Great that you saw him back then at the start of his amazing career, thanks for the comment!
Great. I interviewed him for an hour when I was a student in 1972. A great chat.
Totally loved this man!
❤❤❤
I always knew that EG was a huge influence on DM, but I didn't realise to what a great extent. This recording answers a lot of questions...
Thanks for the music!
Dudley Superb performer ❤❤❤
Bravissimo : un altro Errol Garner..
Supreme. What a talented man. Loved his movies.
Thanks, and thanks again and again. Another precious gem from DM.
Wonderful! Many thanks for this, composerSL...!!
Wow, just great as always. 👍
Wonderfully!!!
Thanks for posting. I always wanted to hear more of his playing!
Truly wonderful!!
🎹I never knew that Dudley Moore could play the piano! He was fantastic as a jazz musician.🎼🎶🎵🎹
Did you know that Louis Armsrong played the tumpet? He was quite good at jazz as well!
@@johnprescott9477 I am not naive Mr. John Prescott! Did you know that Louis Armstrong was a musician in King Oliver's Band during the 1920's? 🎼🎶
I most certainly did. As a jazz fan of many years standing I am aware that Joe Oliver was Satchmo's first boss and mentor after he left New Orleans and went north to Chicago. One of the all time greats.
@@johnprescott9477 Just because I complimented Dudley Moore's talent in music 🎶 did you feel offended because it never occurred to me at the time to mention Louis Armstrong?

Not at all. I was never offended. Just astonished that you weren't aware of Dudley Moore's musical gifts. Did you know that he graduated from Oxford as an organ scholar? He was an extraordinarily talented man in many fields and he's certainly missed by many, including me.
As a musician, I wish he had just played Jazz and given the comedy the elbow but then one of the best comedy duos of all time would be down by 50%. Gina lollobridgita….what a decision!!
I had no idea he was so talented as a jazz pianist.
There are miracles.
Thankyou for posting (NB the Oxford college is called Magdalen - the spelling you used is correct only for Cambridge’s Magdalene College)
Thanks, I have corrected
Must get the sheet music , and a piano of course.
Thanks for your comments. Check out my beautiful and jazzy new Piano Concerto which I think Dudley would have approved. I met Dudley in 1999 and transcribed his Songs Without Words Disc for Faber in 2011.

I’ll definitely check that out.
Talking of transcription, have you any idea of the first chord in this recording? (Lullaby of Birdland) I’m no good at working out Dud’s chords at the best of times plus it’s slightly off pitch which is throwing me.
It would get me started 🎹
Hi @@Pikestnt the first chord in right hand e,f with thumb, a c e ascending, e octave in the left

Thank you so much. I wouldn’t have got that in a month of Sundays. The right hand F might explain why I was trying to play everything a semitone up. That and a deep seated incompetence.
Thank you again
