Thank you for your video. When I want to bring a food or a drink home, can I say, 'Can I have this coffee to go? (or to take away?)'❔🙄 You said 'Could I get the fish and chips?' at the beginning. I wonder if 'Can I get the fish and chips?' is a bit rude or not.. 🤔
Hi, you're welcome! « Can I have the coffee to go please » is probably used more ;) In my videos I aim to give you everything you might hear in everyday real English so regarding 'can' and 'could' you will definitely hear both. However you're right in thinking that 'could' is more polite than 'can' in general. Note that if someone says « Can I have the fish and chips please » in a restaurant, it would not be regarded as rude, « please » is key. Both can and could can be used to make a request, but when asking for permission could is the more polite choice. When indicating ability or possibility, can is used in the present tense and could is used in the past tense. Hope this helps, have a great day !

For the first one, in America, we would also say I´ll have the fish and chips. Actually, it is the one I use the most.
Yes, I agree, I hear the Americans often using 'I'll have ' :)
