Hi folks, there has been a lot of controversy surrounding this video. Permission was granted before hunting on this land, this is real hunting, things don't always go to plan and this video reflects that. I apologize if I offend some people. If you don't like hunting, please don't watch
I don't understand why people say this is cruel. They obviously have no idea where meat from the supermarket came from. The meat you by from the supermarket came from animals who lived a life no animal deserves, they probably never even got to run in a pasture. So before you say this is cruelty or that the animal suffered, either do your research or don't watch the video.
+The Fancy Pitbull now explained why planting all these steak bones didn't give the expected results. so steaks don't grow on trees, interesting indeed.
I've got nothing against hunting, I've taken a few game animals with a rifle. Death was instant as with animals dispatched for commercial sale. It is kind of unethical and inhumane not to be close enough where you can get a kill shot.
BennyCFD I’d love you to be out with nothing but a bow and arrow only and a good month or 2 out in the bush with no help. I’d love to see your explanation on being close enough for an instant kill, useing a rifle is piss weak use a bow and arrow see how you go getting in close enough to get that perfect shot. I’m telling you it’s not easy so don’t judge unless you can hunt like a man .
My first hung wever was recently with a bow and got a goat in New Zealand. I was just lucky got all excited aimed for the vitals and got the nanny in the neck (great meat placing but was just lucky. ROller into a ravine and had to climb back up with it. Made a couple of great meals for the family and shared with some friends too. Can totally relate to your experience, thanks for sharing and registering. Joining Patreon as soon as my next payslip comes in. Chur chur.
Congrats on your success with the TV shows mate. I'm really glad they have finally picked up at least an Aussie or a Kiwi. About bloody time. You're pretty fortunate getting picked up, I've been looked over twice so far, due to my "can I bow hunt the Bears" questions during casting Interviews, so well done dude, all the best with your future, and if you're ever in Aus, gimme a bell.
Pure gold. Also amazing on making your bow, that's very very hard to do. I shoot with a club and there are enthusiasts there, that made their own. They had many breakages and failed attempts before they finally made one that held together and shot well.
Sometimes it goes that way my friend. It is heartbreaking especially when the shot produced enough blood that you would think the animal should have dropped soon. It has happened to us all. It is clear in the vid that you did your best to retrieve it and I don't think any true hunter would think less of you for it. My buddy Martijn and I carve a lot of bows and hunt with stone points out here in California, so we were both impressed with your bow goat hunt. Keep at it and keep the good vids coming. We love them!!!! Kevin
This is the kind of hunter I like, he hunts because he likes challenges, and this video reflects it. You're not like those lame ass archers that sit all day on a tree: if you're gonna hunt an animal, do it like a man!
Liked your video mate. Beautiful country you have there. I'm bow hunting for whitetail deer in the northeast US with either my 64 inch long bow or 62 inch recurve. I love bow hunting as its a real challenge to get within 20 yards of a deer. I see you using a 4 blade broadhead. I use a 2 blade as I think it penetrates better when using traditional bows. Keep up the good work, and good luck hunting.
Great stuff Josh, LOVE the bow hunting stuff mate - more of it I reckon. The fact that you actually hit the animal with a homemade bow is testament to your skill. Keep it up
Mate I love your new show on Discovery Channel, you two are great together. Proper food, great seeing you guys having fun and collecting and making some real nice food! I hope to see more soon!
Enjoyed the video, so much better than the "Hollywood" type of hunting videos people like to throw up. This is what hunting is all about, the experience is what we all love.
Very good quality video Mate ! No one likes to loose one,and hunting is a lot of work.I practice every day weather permits, as I have an archery range on my land. I did get a Buck on my 58th Birthday at 36 yards.I did wait the 20 minutes and he only went 60 yards and slept his way to heaven.Great eating that. Thanks again.
i believe theres a video of a hyena that got into a fight with a lion on youtube. Most of the skin on his head was missing, and he was likely going to die over the course of a few weeks or so from infection. Animals do much more painful things to each other then a few goats getting shot (by someone who had intentions to eat, not to be a masochist). This is really cool man, thank you for posting this, theres also a video on youtube about a 70 lb pvc/fiberglass longbow, you might want to look at that.
finally a bloke that doesn't stand there talking about capturing artistic kill shots and other crap. A man of action takes his bow and kills dinner. subbed liked all that good shit keep it up.
Advanced archery are a pretty good crowd, I'll vouch for em! I just use my fingers to prevent that knocking of the arrow. If you've just hiked up from miles away and got the old adrenaline going stalking an animal it's a lot easier to draw your shot if you just use your fingers to stabilise and prevent that knocking or worse, dropping the arrow off its rest and not getting it drawn at all. Particularly for newbies who under target practise conditions can draw a heavy weight and think that higher is better but arms are tired from carrying the bow and adrenaline is pumping you can't draw as much as you would on the range.
My boy shot a 8 point whitetail last season. Almost point blank 10 feet from him! .303 Enfield, he jumped up and chased it 100 yards! then we had to drag it (seemed like a mile) 250 yards straight up an old logging road. 200lbs of meat AFTER we gutted it! Now he knows to set still and let them bleed out. Waiting is the toughest part.
Just a shout to everyone getting butthurt over this video, claiming animal cruelty: You are watching a video entitled "bow hunting goats with home made longbow." Don't expect a cute cat to lick some snow in this video. It's about bow hunting. Second of all, the meat that is sold at supermarkets is more often than not kept and killed in a much nastier way. If you think that every animal gets bolted in the back of the head before getting band-sawed up, think again. Whilst I hunt by the, "Kill it only to eat or to not be infected or eaten," mantra, the fact of the matter is this. An animal bleeding out in 5 mins is a lot less than they usually get in the wild. It is a lot less that they get in abattoirs. Your average hunter will cause an animal far less pain than most. Grow up, get educated and stop preaching on videos you know will get a response. It's attention whoring and the internet could do without you. Good day.
Awesome, Josh! NZ seems to have some real beautiful country and wildlife! Hope to visit (and hunt) there someday! Thanks for posting this video - love the spot and stalk - that's some good ole' fashioned hunting! (Learning lessons is always part of the experience:)
Man you get a few trolls on your channel, surprising when your videos are so entertaining and insightful. Have you considered turning pro and getting your own spot on NZ TV? It would be far more interesting to watch your videos then the average fishing show. Keep up the good work mate. Excellent stuff.
Hey I loved this video. You're a good bushman. Been reading the comments and got a kick out of em! Way to handle yourself! I'm Alaskan, living down under for a bit. Coming to NZ for a month or two with my two boys to do some free range hunting. Hope to run into you mate!
I really enjoyed your video. I am working on a vid just now on making a bow but actually took up trading stock sometime back & am always so tired. Have a look at my 2015 hunting vid. I had some real close calls this season with bow but concluded with rifle. The one point : In future never even point a arrow even a field tip towards your self. You ran down a bank! Always quiver your arrows unless right ready to shoot. Very rought bow there whew next one will be better ☺.
This is awesome mate. Really well put together video and really nicely presented. Have you done more of these? You definitely have a talent for it. Great little glimpse of Kiwi 'slice of life', life on the coast. I'm jealous, sick of Auckland, wanna get outta here and into the bush. Had a couple of goes hunting with my compound bow, but I'm rubbish at the hunting. Not giving up tho, off to Port Waikato this weekend:)
Great video mate, this is an example of how it was done back in the day before compound bows.. thumbs up and subbed. also whats the name of the intro song you used
+Josh james mate forget the haters and the drama makers keep doing what your doing cause its awesome. another good thing to use on your bow as the arrow rest is a piece of an old tooth brush cut a V out of it and glue it on its pretty quiet
I live the next valley over where the goat was shot and have dropped plenty of them with the longbow, that shot was sound . farmers yelling stuffed the hunt .goat ran off into a few million miles of bush, well done that man. Kids now sick of goat. ONYA. Rowans old man
Nice vid Josh. Have you tried making string silencers? I have seen a guy make them out of a couple of strands of wool threaded through the string just a few inches back from each nock. After a few shots they puff out and almost look like fur silencers
Hey man good effort! Hunter gatherer from way back chur!!Having trouble crafting arrows any tips?? Don't let the haters stop you living this awesome life style bro go hard and make more videos I love it.
easier to order shafts for arrows, port orford cedar is what you want. You can make your own and straighten arrows by bending after heating but real difficult to get good shafts. Chur
Hi Josh that’s fine if you want to stay and Family. Maybe around Christmas time as we going away for 2 weeks, I can point you in the right areas for dear hunting, it’s very good at moment with all this new growth around. And bit easier to what you use to. Let us no please.
Gday mate , since this video how is your bow hunting skills going, fine tuning your bow and quieting the noise down on it etc ( arrow rattles ) I know chasing goats will keep you fit there bloody tough animals on mountains and have you done anymore goat hunting since. Cheers 🍻
cool vid man : ) . farmer sounds hardcase . love it . plus i know you worked hard to try n find that animal as we all do . learning heaps from your vids . thanks
saw you, watched this and subscribed....only a true hunter going for food would do as you did on them "bloody goats. lmao love the show bud and please crank out some more.
Great hunt despite the odds. May try some double blades COC broadhead for better penetration and shot-thru. With a single wound the animal bleeds almost exclusively into it body cavity and leave no blood trail.
Yeah mate. You got to cure/dry the wood, hard to find a piece with no knots. Get a couple of staves to dry as they can split real bad when drying sometimes as well. Cheerd

Daniel Maydana I agree. Hunting is why we have survived so long. If you think its cruel, look at how alot of animals hunt
Totally!
ye boi!
OscarDoesProgramming Hunting for food is perfectly fine in my opinion. It's the way things go. Killing just for fun feels wrong for me.
I feel your pain josh its hard hunting with a bow, especially a homemade longbow

Seems he's using lightweight arrows meant for a compound. If he was using stone points like you he may have had better luck.

Been bow hunting recently?
Could you upload a recent hunt if possible?

I've watched it for a second time now!
Great video. Your bow must have been tillered green for it to lose that much draw weight.

Classic Kiwi stuff right there.Loving kings of the wild too.
very cool setup. be careful filming with broadheads near your neck. I'm over in America and I bowhunt every year. keep the dream alive!
What NZ trees do you recommend for bow wood? I have been trying for years to find trees that would make good a good English longbow staff?
Kanuka works well but you need a big tree and takes about a year to season
I wonder how long before Australia outlaws bows too
I live the next valley over where the goat was shot and have dropped plenty of them with the longbow, that shot was sound . farmers yelling stuffed the hunt .goat ran off into a few million miles of bush, well done that man. Kids now sick of goat. ONYA. Rowans old man

Hi Josh, I'm based in Wellington wanting to try and make a longbow, just wondering what local woods you would recommend? thanks
Ok watching this in English class no sound forgot headphones did he get/find the goat he shot?
Hey bro I heard you can make a good bow from Kanuka! Do you (or anyone else here)know any info on the that? Chur
Yeah mate. You got to cure/dry the wood, hard to find a piece with no knots. Get a couple of staves to dry as they can split real bad when drying sometimes as well. Cheerd
Cheers bro, Thanks for sharing ya hard earned knowledge!
Im josh your Josh we both live in New Zealand!
What wood did you use for your bow and what is the string made of.
I'm hoping you used the whole of the Animal?
Premo Vids Josh,True Kiwi Bushman Kia Kaha Bro
I live up Mot, I'll go for a bow hunt with ya
well i liked it entertaining and it showed something what more can you ask for
Wood love to see some heavy wood arrows and cut on contact two blade heads being flung from that longbow! Light weight arrows and chisel tip heads are a great recipe for poor penetration. Please tell me those weren't plastic vanes.
classic, nah bro. fletching. I have since gotten into traditional archery hardcore. About to present a discovery channel hunting/survival series and get to use a longbow for that. 2 blade heads are the go aye. single bevel. Its a learning curve… cheers
Josh James Kiwi Bushman Happy to hear!! Looking forward to the discovery channel series. Who did you end choosing to be your bowyer?
Echo Archery the bloody production company got some english bowyer to make a couple. No idea who they are or if the bow is going to match my draw length. Should be sweet as hopefully.

Jake Ing cheers hooks, by crikey there has been some negative feedback on this video so I appreciate the positive. Josh

Yes if you drew it back to 3/4 its limit
Sweet video mate , subscribed !
What do you make the bows out of ?
And on one of your other videos whats the names of those trees you tried to start a fire with?
Pretty sure it's Lance wood. If you find a nice straight one that's a decent size it's not hard to make
have you tried making a pvc bow
Any tips for the bum/hunter life?
4:26 Where did the arrow hit on that one and how far did it run?
What sort of wood did make the bow out of ?
