LSU Tiger Racing: Students design, engineer and compete

"We'll test it until it breaks"? I thought that all the engineering equations and computer design were supposed to result in parts that don't break at all. Why is trial-and-error involved? What were all their courses and CAD software for? I don't understand mechanical engineering, that much is certain.
