Cheap rates? The "industry" has been dead for over 40 years now. Go ahead, buy a big truck. The only thing that's going to change is the amount of zero's on the end of your numbers. Larger expenses, less places to park. more restrictions, (low bridges and weight restrictions) and the same cheap rates. I sold my truck in 1987 and never looked back. My insurance was $1200 a year, fuel was $1.00 a gallon, and my payments were $1130 a month on a 3 year old large car with big power financed for 3 years. I was pulling for $1.30 a mile average leased on with a company that paid my health insurance in full, paid my road taxes, tags and provided the trailer. Less traffic, more places to park, 45 or 48 foot trailers, and paper logs. Back then, the USA actually manufactured products, so I never waited to get a load. I remember times loading at 3 am because factories ran 24/7. Dead heading over 50 miles was rare. Back then hardly anyone cared where you parked, and the only truck stops I remember that charged to park was the Union 76 and the TA in Ontario Ca. Lots of Mom and Pop operations and the truck stops for the most part, all had decent restaurants.
When you decide to get out of it, there will be thousands to take your place with the same stories. The only thing that keeps people in this business is the lure of big money. That one load you got a year ago that paid $5.00 a mile, with hopes you will get another soon.
    I wish you luck.

I found that dually to have flaws and they also tear up to dam much for me even the brand new ones . I see some big hotshot ballers get hotels but Im not comfortable doing that either I don’t care how good the freight pays I’m trying to take all mine home so hotels are no good . You get on Central and book a .50-80/mile Truck/SUV or van and park it right on top of it. Now you are making $2+/mile. I've survived through these shit rates and pandemic mixing and matching.. You can't expect to get $2+ for a single load in hotshot you have to piece together the small loads. The easiest way is to book a good freight load then add a car going to the same area..

I’m not in the business yet but have to admit if I’d been on the road a while and wanted to go home, I’d be inclined to take “cheap” freight to hopefully lessen my expenses of getting where I wanted to go. At the same time, I’d not want to mess up the rates on a larger scale. What’s a safe rate per mile for CDL and non CDL?

    • @SouthGeorgiaHotShot

a cdl with the proper equipment would absolutely open up more. I don't think there is a correct answer on whats a safe cut off. When I first started I figured 1.50 was a good cut off. But quickly realized it wasn't enough. And that even if your expenses are less then other. You shouldn't destroy the market.

To all: remember that the economy goes in cycles. All economic growth comes to an end and then there is a time for economic decline. Fortunately economic growth last longer then economic declines. Half the country will blame Biden for a possible worsening recession in the coming months or year. Recessions don’t happen overnight, they take months in the making. Unfortunately the recession started on Trumps watch with COVID outbreak.

There are just as many Big Brothers ignoring the same rules. You can look on you tube and find just as many. Light tickets are a joke on big or little trailers. They go out just for fun. I had a job in high school just checking lights on trailers and wiring. a trailer could sit in the yard a week and the same light might work 3 out of 5 days or 5 times a day for 5 days and go out 10 feet down the road. Pasadena, Texas writes no cdl A tickets to guys using a company truck and trailer bringing back hunting stuff and puts the them out of service.

FYI, DOT monitors every avenue of trucking. they know who you are, work for, truck numbers, trailers, if you revised your truck and trailers, any thing regarding the business or as an employee. so when you go thru a scale, those camera's takes your pic, runs that data, and before you get too the entrance they already have your life infront of them. police cars are the same, it takes only 3 seconds too know every thing about your car. any hits, turns on a flashing red light and they can and most likely will turn around or as folowing you , will pull you over. its spying crap.
