@@cygnusa3772 I think he was speaking of the boring sedan-like driving experience, not the look of the car. It’s very understated and handsome, and it will likely look very nice for decades. BMW is good at that unlike Audi, and MB
Haha right?! I’m surprised this model update didn’t at least get the 7 series nose considering the limousine class of car from the German makes tends to be the most conservatively styled, and even the 7 didn’t get a pass over by this latest design trend.

From (short) experience, I'd say the new 5-series the least sterile and has the most character of the big three german sedans. But they're all very sterile anyways. And IMO the beemers center screen is the best, partly because you don't have to touch it almost at all.

@@oxysz It's bitter sweet tbh. Check out the C8 A6 owners' reporting issues on Audi-sport.net . One of them had the entire dash replaced. It was under warranty of course. But for a car costing as much as that, one would expect it to not spend that much time in the dealership getting fixed. The payment's still keep getting paid every month but what Audi give you for a "courtesy" car is not an A6, most likely a manual A1 or A3 ! My own C7 A6 developed a rattle one month from new and the dealers could not locate the source. Recently when looking for a long term replacement, I test drove the C8 A6 myself, and in 15 minutes of test drive, the test car developed the popular rattle/squeak. Also, the driver aids stopped working, the dashboard lit up like a festive tree. For me I would personally not go near a VAG product. But fo course, YMMV :-)

@Aria and you own nothing. Paying to have an empty hand at the end of the day. Imo leases are designed for people who can't afford something to get into it. The exact demographic that shouldn't be leasing for that reason
@Aria are you getting confused with leasing vs borrowing money to pay off the car? What you're describing is borrowing to pay off a car which is still owning a car once you've paid it off. Leasing is just a rental basically. Is the terminology used in the US different to the UK and Aus for example?
@Aria I don't know your financial situation so I can't comment. But do your due diligence, if you're saving is $100 a month or $1200 a year and that's the make or break point for you, it really goes back to my first comment. Leasing is a strategy used to get people who can't afford a car, into that very car. Because at the end of the day pay $1200 more a year is piss change considering you get to keep the asset (depreciating asset admittedly) at the end of the term which you can then either keep or sell. There's plenty of videos online by financial experts much better at it than me that illustrate the type of situation where leasing makes sense and long story short, there's very few situations. Only if the person switches cars and wants the newest and most up to date car every 3 years. It's definitely not for people who want to make a financially sound choice. Again, I have no idea of your finances and don't claim to. But it's worthwhile doing your due diligence, it can't hurt
If we just forget about the soul of BMW, and look at the car as a car (aesthetic and build quality), the underbody is 10/10. But come on, wtf happened to the exterior? Its disgusting and a total turn off. The interior is sublime though, those seats look so comfortable.

I had one, the 530i, with the 4cyl-engine. At no point did I feel it lacked power. The lack of turbo lag was almost magical. The interior was beautiful with very high quality materials with no rattles or bad panel gaps. The fuel economy reminded me of a 3 Series, which was impressive. Going 85 down the freeway felt like 50. The driver seat was probably the most comfortable seat I have ever been in and all my passengers were always comfortable. It was a heavy car and driving it you could feel it yet the engine and transmission made it drive so well as so smoothly. In the 3-year lease I had it, it only went to the dealer for oil changes and software updates. Never have I been more impressed with a vehicle especially for the price point. I am a big fan of MB, but somehow BMW managed to make everything extremely consistent and near perfect with the 5. I would happily recommend the 5 to anyone looking for a quality, sport-oriented luxury 4DR sedan. @Zombie Head They have been saying since 2016 at least that they wanted to focus on quality more, because they see where the future is heading: Fewer new cars sold every year. People will buy cars and keep them longer. Well, if that's what the buyer wants, then you have to build cars that will do that. Is it soulless? Maybe if you want something a bit aggressive that can't quite help but eye poland hungrily, but that's not all of us.
@Zombie Head Yeah, but they really didn't have much choice, as small carmakers were pretty much doomed by the cost of modern research and development. Their traditional market of sports sedans and coupes has shrunk steadily and no independent carmaker left is focused on that small market category. BMW chose to broaden their products to include the bigger luxury car category and that kept them profitable.
@Zombie Head BMW has lost it's identity indeed. Merc = luxury. Audi = business. Lexus/Acura = reliability. Jag = British lux. Cadillac/Lincoln = American lux. BMW = ??? It used to be about being the best sports sedans. Now that AMG and the Audi Rs have caught up, BMW lost that advantage. So they're trying to be a Merc/Audi mix bag, and that leads to problems like this. I don't see them recovering from this tbh.

I had a 530i as a loaner. It's a nice car the way Lexus is nice. Boring to drive, very comfortable. So why not get the Lexus, get the reliability and resale value instead? It costs less, too.
Because Lexus are Toyota powertrains which are not even as performance-oriented as the very base models... there is simply no comparison between a "300 hp" Lexus and a "335hp" BMW... they will feel like a 100 hp difference, not 35 any day. Lexus literally has the slowest vehicles out of all the luxury brands, not to mention mostly FWD. And LFA is a super niche product that is simply not mass market.
Because the Lexus is less attractive, the interior and infotainment are less thought out, the ‘new’ Lexus engine options are boring and weak and arguably no more reliable than the B58 engine in this 540i. With this BMW you are paying for the best you can get right now, with full intention to be rid of the car by the time the next one is released.
Are any of these luxury brands worth holding on to for more than a lease period? I don't know of many people who buy new true luxury cars that plan on keeping them 10+ years. And with all the new gadgets and tech, I question the reliability of many cars down the road.

I fell in love with the 5 series a couple years ago -- hope to get one as my next car. Such a great cruiser. I didn't expect to like it at all, but got invited to one of those BMW drive events and was pleasantly surprised.
I bought a 2023 540i a couple of months ago and hands down it's the best sedan I have ever driven in my 36 years of being a licensed driver in the USA. I've owned a lot of vehicles, some real beaters when I was young and didn't have money, and several different luxury choices in the last 15 years or so when I had money to get what I wanted, and the BMW 540i has beaten them all in terms of performance, luxury, fun, drivability, looks, value, and service. This includes Mercedes, Genesis, and Lexus to name a few, all of which I have owned and ran screaming from eventually. Mercedes because of the terrible performance and painful suspension and road noise, Genesis for the horrific customer service experience (thanks Hyundai, you ruined what could have been a monster of a brand by treating your luxury customers the same as the folks with 500 credit scores buying a turd), and Lexus, which always felt like I had overpaid for what i got, which was an hyper expensive Toyota. BMW mitigated all of these issues for me. I don't think I will ever buy another brand at this point in my life.
This is such a great review! One thing I noticed however: this is the first implementation of the B58 mild hybrid system from BMW besides the M440i. The 48V starter-generator motor not only competes with Mercedes M256 straight six, it add 3mpg to both city and highway driving (now 32 highway according to the EPA). For a car that does 0-60 in under 5 seconds, that’s incredibly impressive! While it may not have much of a soul, I actually can advocate for this. As an enthusiast, it’s nice to have that one boring car. A car to cleanse your pallet, that just works, won’t complicate your life, and reminds you when you get out and step into a true driver’s car... just how special that 2nd and 3rd car is in your rich ass garage... because that’s exactly who’s going to buy a 5 series.
BMW engines/powertrain are similar some of the most amazing engineering there is. People talk about horsepower and all that but you really don't get the same level of power vs efficiency as you do in their engines (Of course we know BMW underrates them too so there's that)
@@dailyrant4068 if you go back roughly 40 years, BMW were practising black magic on their engines even then. Hell, even something as performance oriented as an E46 M3 or the new Z4 with the b58 will get 30+ mpg.
Soulless? You must have this confused with a Lexus ES. Not sporty? What new midsize luxury sedan under 80K is more sporty than an M Sport 540i? Soul-less? What kind of metric is that? Lacking character and passion? Try pushing it on windy road, the Xdrive is fantastic. But soul-less is a subjective, inconsequential measure that means the same thing as "I don't like this car because I don't like it."
"Lacking character, passion" (i think so for any new BMW) is for me two things: 1. Turbo, i dont like turbo/chargers, i think its a horsepower cheat and a engineering cheat, i want a real N/A engine.... the sound/performance is important... 535i used to mean a 3.5-4.0+ Litre V8 back in the days.... now its a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder TURBO..... ***** offf...... 2. Automatic gearbox etc... yes, its comfortable, but i feel less used/in control, feel BORED... i think just destroys the fun & spoils the fun (not to mention the engine sound/shifting)... certainly doesnt exploit the engines capability aswell.... N/A engines and manual gearbox is the way BMW used to do it ALWAYS, what set them apart and made me love them over Mercedes/Audi... but now they went the same shitty TURBO route....
I’m on my 3rd Five series in a row, about to be 4th. Amazing car. In my opinion, much better looking than the A6 and E Class, especially in M-Sport form. Yes, it’s more luxury than sport and that’s why I love it. BMW isn’t stupid, they know their customer.
Dude, I’d drive this and smash on some vegan cheese burgers, because why not. Mmmm. Two minutes in heaven is better than no minutes in heaven. Aw yeah.
Can't agree with some of your statements. My 2018 M550 drives worse than a truck, especially with run flat tires. The M package is brutal on the teeth, suspension and back. Went through numerous tires, thankfully no rims. iDrive is ergonomic (and you're right - the BMW way since the 745i), but has many idiosyncrasies that wreak havoc, such as when the A/C fan stops blowing and its HOT in the cabin (this was looked at multiple times by technicians and its "By Design"). Ha. The handling has limited feel through the wheel, controls are nice. It does go fast in a straight line, but that's it. Carplay integration is terrible and not utilizing the entire screen. Brake pedal is soft and can't be easily modulated, car comes to abrupt stop especially with auto start/stop on - too aggressive to shut down engine. Compared to a Porsche in these areas (handling/suspension, comfort, infortainment, brakes, etc.) the Porsche is superior in every way. Sorry BMW (I've owned many for 20 years), I'm no longer a customer.
You may not like its iDrive system or its untraditional styling, but the E60 actually handles better than the E39, and has better steering feel. The F10 meanwhile felt like an E38 7 Series- smoother and more refined than before, but still a drivers car. This current generation is the first 5 Series that doesn't feel like a drivers car.

These 540s start becoming a VERY viable option in 3-4 years when they hit the used market at a much lower price point 20s-30s. It’s not a competitor at 80 grand, but after the built in depreciation has hit, its definitely a real option for plenty of people. What’s important to know, is that the 540i has one of the most reliable, efficient, and powerful drivetrains BMW has produced in probably 12 years. At this point I would be perfectly comfortable owning a 2017 or 2018 for 30 grand, with 35,000 miles on it. I am aware it will have a cost to maintain just like *any* modern car, but that $50,000 discount makes up for it. My 2018 M550i just hit 100,000 miles and I have done nothing but basic maintenance. The weirdest issue I had was replacing a DRL light module. The whole time I was 0-60ing in 3.6 seconds and getting 30 MPG on the highway with Eco Pro mode while getting back massages. I had this experience for less than the price of a new Toyota Camry. To me the G30 M550i is V8 perfection. If I want ideal handling on the track I just take out my MX-5.

More non sense, BMW doesn't charge more than what the same class charges (Audi A6, Benz E-class). Your argument about having a Maxima is reasonable, but I can make the same argument that a Honda accord is even a better value purchase than a Maxima. People always make arguments about pricing which are frankly just ignorant. Whenever you look at pricing of a product, you have to compare to the market they compete in. BMW sits right at the middle of the pack, slightly more $$ than Audi and slightly cheaper than Benz in almost every category.

I don't like Accords and it would take a 2.0t touring so 40k new to have the same options when I bought the max in 2018, so not a better value, and it was all new with the 2.0t so reliability was up in the air vs a 20 year old motor.

Comparing the 540i to Accord or Camry is a joke. Even the 530i is a far more exciting car than either of the Japanese options. The BMW is miles ahead of either the Camry or Accord. Get a two year old 540i for the same price as a Camry, there is no comparison. The Camry is the most boring vehicle I have ever driven. Mark, you nailed it when you said: "There's an emotional reason to spend this kind of money on a car." I agree 100%. There are many subtleties of a vehicle that specs cannot capture. It's the same reason some guys might choose a 'plain' woman for a mate. She has that inevitable something, that je ne sais quoi, which other men who only judge women by their outward appearance completely miss.
I've been driving this (the 530 Xi) for 2 weeks and could not agree more with you guys. It is a clear step up from the 3 series, and does everything great. The question is about its price point and diminishing returns...yes it's better, but not twice as good as an accord. That said once the novelty were off it really is a no-nonsense car that just works. The notable exception being (i) the object sensor thinking it's hitting walls everywhere when it's snowing and (ii) the cheap plastic clicking sound of the volume knob on the steering wheel. Otherwise, it's solid
I've owned several 5 series. Here's the thing, in every product class going from good to very good to great isn't linear. that next 5% isn't going to be 5% more, it's going to be twice as expensive. For someone like me who drive 30k miles a year, I want the best experience I can have during those many hours on the road and I don't mind paying more, ji don't mind paying for nice meal even though I could get 5 In-n-Out burgers for the same price. Another thing worth mentioning is the BMW leasing scheme makes it really attractive to rent BMWs year after year. Thanks as always for an excellent review.
Exactly, and gives you a little sense of speed when you hammer it on to the freeway. Thats it. Shit I even live in an area to "go for a drive" but never do anyway. Too many big stupid trucks on narrow canyon roads ruin it.

Nice video, and I appreciate the impressions. CORRECTION: BMW's engines are not "mass market" engines by definition. They are intended for luxury buyers and the cars are priced that way. A mass market engine? Try the Toyota Corolla. "Soulless" is a term relevant only to muscle car enthusiasts or sports coupe enthusiasts.. To anyone else it's irrelevant.
Funny, $65-70k is expensive for a 5-series, yes. So is $40k for a Camry v6 xse or Accord 2.0T when they used to cost half as much. All shit are expensive now and that’s life and inflation as we know it. And also, 5-series has never been a sports car. I had a hand me down e39 528i, had a F10 535i, and just picked up the G30 540i. The 5 has never been a sports car, but a sport sedan.
Perfect car to smash 300 miles and be fresh enough to present effectively. Love Lexus until I took a trip in one of these recently, this really gave me a different view on what a long trip can be.
Yeah, BMWs are better. Don't know why they are complaining about them being no longer sports cars. Nonsense. Sound dampening is good 'cause you can listen to music with more comfort. Even the McLaren GT adds sound dampening and some luxury touches such as a good sound system. And it's still a fully fledged sports car. If the 540i is not nimble enough, they should look at 3rd and 2nd series (as cars are getting bigger). Those lower series BMWs are more nimble and fun but they won't have the same luxury or noise isolation. It's a good alternative between el cheapo cars like Hondas, Toyotas, Hyundais, etc and something like a Bentley. The latter is gonna cost an arm and a leg in terms of upkeep and possible repairs. Yeah, the Bentley is gonna have way more luxury but BMWs are more fun IMO. It's so ridiculous them complaining about this BMW like if BMW didn't produce 2nd and 3rd series. They should praise it; not compare with worse cars saying they don't see much difference. The difference is huge: BMWs do 0-60 in 3-7 seconds depending on the version. Japanese and Korean cars can't do that unless they are dedicated small coupes. In the latter case, the Porsche Cayman and the BMW M2 will also shred them to pieces, but they might still complain about exuberant price tags.
Thats why people judge without trying it, in video they say why pay double as Camry ( have a camry for 4 yrs) Yes it is worth it as double as camry bcs with camry you suffer everyday
And what sporty sedan would you recommend?;-) With B58, RWD bias and few tricks like adaptive suspension and rear while steering, it can be quite fun in the turns. Suprized you did not mention it has double wishbone suspension up front and my G31 wagon (not sure about G30 - the sedan) has air springs in the back, so it can hold the correct right hight. Stering also feels much better than on the F models, where it was really dead. But of course it excels in the fast stuff, my normal speed on highway is 100 mph and 120 when I go to Germany. The car stays planted and quite, and thats what BMW bigger sport sedans should be - high way cruisers, that cat take a few fun corners once you are in the Alps. Its not as sporty as my e61 530i wagon with manual and dynamic drive from 2006 was (200kg lighter), but what other car (wagon for me) do you recommend in todays market as more sporty?
Might be soulless. Should've driven the m550i, maybe would've had a different opinion. Probably not though. When you reach near perfection. "Soul" is pretty much eradicated. Since what we define as having soul or emotion, is something that has flaws that we are willing to accept

I had one, the 530i, with the 4cyl-engine. At no point did I feel it lacked power. The lack of turbo lag was almost magical. Going 85 down the freeway felt like 50. The driver seat was probably the most comfortable seat I have ever been in and all my passengers were always comfortable. It was a heavy car and driving it you could feel it yet the engine and transmission made it drive so well as so smoothly. @Zombie Head When you say "the absolute state of..." it is referring to the present. It's clear he was talking about current cars.
@Zombie Head
They have been saying since 2016 at least that they wanted to focus on quality more, because they see where the future is heading: Fewer new cars sold every year.

People talk about horsepower and all that but you really don't get the same level of power vs efficiency as you do in their engines (Of course we know BMW underrates them too so there's that)
It’s also fair to say BMW has a lot more experience building modern inline-6 engines, and frankly I’d rather have theirs than Mercedes recent attempt.
@@dailyrant4068 if you go back roughly 40 years, BMW were practising black magic on their engines even then. Motor journalism found it mind boggling that a 3.5 litre petrol engine with 290hp could get roughly 25mpg on a spirited run, when the same engine of similar displacement from Porsche would struggle to get high teens. Hell, even something as performance oriented as an E46 M3 or the new Z4 with the b58 will get 30+ mpg.
@@XcoolcoolbeansbeansX Mercedes has also had inline 6 for forever. The original gullwing had one

Soulless? You must have this confused with a Lexus ES. Not sporty? What new midsize luxury sedan under 80K is more sporty than an M Sport 540i? From the ride height looks like you had the softer DHP instead of the traditional 704 sport suspension- too bad for you. Great infotainment, chassis, engine, choice of interior leather and trim, and quality paint. Absolutely the best midsize sedan in the segment. Damn happy with mine.
I agree with you. No BMW with the B58 inline 6 is soulless. I have the B58 in my M340 and it’s fantastic (nice linear power output and very efficient). They admit the car does everything well, but they don’t like it. Strange review.
@@ethanthomas68 M340i is def more tossable but by the time you spec one out there's only a 10 grand difference from a well spec'd 540i where you get a lot more luxury and shoulder room without giving up on fun. Try one next time.

I drove this back to back with a C43 AMG, Genesis G70, Genesis G80, Infinity Q50s, Lexus RC F today. I - a regular run of the mill driver who has never been to the track - have NO IDEA why you keep saying it's not a sports sedan. It's fucking fast, the transmission is fast, the engine is epic, the awd system inspires confidence. Do you need me to what - corner at 100 kph while flooring it? I'm not going to do that in any of those. This was my favorite car of the bunch, and used it was within 5-10K of all the rest of them.
Character, passion? Put an exhaust and a tune with 80 more HP on it. Come on!
Sounds like a nice car to buy off-lease for $30K and drive for another five years.
...with a warranty!!!
it doesn't help to be in white. If it was bright red, it would be a slight improvement. My neighborhood is chuck full of these things, Model 3's and Model Y's. Great cars but pretty depressing. I love to throw my Guards Red 981 Spyder into sport exhaust and redeem the 'hood
Soul-less? What kind of metric is that? Lacking character and passion? Try pushing it on windy road, the Xdrive is fantastic. But soul-less is a subjective, inconsequential measure that means the same thing as "I don't like this car because I don't like it."
What in the world are you talking about? This is a great driver's car, this is 2021, not 1991, get real!
You see a lack of soul, I see refinement, comfort and the best UX in the business (iDrive 6/7). Don’t like the newer wacky BMWs
"Lacking character, passion" (i think so for any new BMW) is for me two things:
I drove a 540i for some days and loved it. Granted, it’s not as passionate as a Ferrari, but for everyday use show me a more refined car.
I have no idea which year or model any of these new BMWs are.

I also don’t see myself trying to drive it 150,000 miles into the ground, like some of you assume be default. For me, and many others it will check all the boxes just fine.

Spot on, just picked one up for the mid 30s fully loaded with 40k miles. B58 engine is reliable and easily tunable if you ever get the itch.

@@dailyrant4068 Yes their all the same price but they have went up stupidly high compared to a normal car like my maxima with the same options. The interior while ok on the surface is still cheaply built and so is that terrible Toyota motor. The Camry v6 offers no refinement. I've owned several 5 series. Here's the thing, in every product class going from good to very good to great isn't linear. that next 5% isn't going to be 5% more, it's going to be twice as expensive. And also, 5-series has never been a sports car. I had a hand me down e39 528i, had a F10 535i, and just picked up the G30 540i. The 5 has never been a sports car, but a sport sedan.

Stering also feels much better than on the F models, where it was really dead. But of course it excels in the fast stuff, my normal speed on highway is 100 mph and 120 when I go to Germany.
