- It was 30 years ago on the last day of June that the first episode for another classic series saw its first episode release: RECORD OF LODOSS WAR, a 13-episode direct-to-video (OVA) series. But did you know that it's based on a campaign that popularized RPGs in Japan? It is. There's a lot of fascinating secrets behind this show. In celebration of this show's 30th anniversary I did a virtual panel on LODOSS, as it is a show which I still have a soft spot for today. Unfortunately this panel presentation had to be cut (read: mutilated) for showing on RUclips, as I show some clips to illustrate my points. Some of them had to be omitted to avoid copyright infringement. Nonetheless, I am very proud of this one. To watch the uncut version, feel free to visit www.dailymotio.... Either way, I hope you enjoy this as much as I did making it.
I was like 11 or 12 when i was up at night when my parents thought i sleep, watching tv in the middle of the night. While zapping through the channels i found a special anime night on one channel between 12:00 pm and 05:00 am. They showed Record of Lodoss War (OVA) in it's entirety. I watched it all untill 05:00 am. It was so awesome, i waited until it would run again and then recorded it on VHS. Awesome times.
Thanks for replying. I hope you enjoyed this panel.
A certain Japanese said"The English created ”Road of the Rings",American created"Dungeons & Dragons",Japanese created"Record of Lodoss War".....
I'd love to read Roadie of the Rings
The ost is beautiful.
Absolutely. I like the music from both the OVA and CHRONICLES, even though I think the former is the better of the two.
You did the most epic video about this series that anyone could ever ask for. It's incredible. This was my first fantasy anime that was lost to me till a few years ago before discovering it again. It's close to my heart. I can't wait for the novels to be fully translated someday.
Thanks! Wouldn't it be nice if the novels got translated? I don't know if they will, but it would be nice. I was a little worried about how some viewers might react to the mentions of the voice actors in the dub considering I have seen online slandering of these dubs, but I always considered the LODOSS OVA dub an underrated classic.
Thanks, this was great. Brought back memories.
I loved Orson, always had a soft spot for people who rage.
Fire and Ice, The Last Unicorn, The Black Cauldron... gems of my childhood I fondly think of. I don't think it'd ever happen but seeing any of them brought to life in live action on the big screen would wisk me off my feet.
Let alone a well made/produced series of Record of Lodoss War live action tended to with care like Jackson's LOTR films. I'd be so psyched.
I'd love for animated movies and series to bring back the art style of these great works. Leave voice work for voice actors. We don't need Chris Pratt playing Parn 😬.
Correct
Awesome, awesome video; there were many things that I was unaware of. I definitely prefer the OVAs to Chronicles of the Heroic Knight, for which I have mixed feelings that border on hate XD
It's great that you also gave details about its tabletop origins; have you played Sword World, or any other roleplaying game?
Regrettably I have not. The kind of roleplaying games I've played and prefer are the JRPGs on consoles. FFVI, CHRONO TRIGGER, EARTHBOUND, TALES OF SYMPHONIA, and the XENOBLADE games are among my top five, although that's the equivalent of forcing me to select.
@@Turnajon I see, that's a pretty good selection of games!
This is one of the shows that got me into fantasy. This and Dragonlance. Working on my own fantasy script now. Thank you for the in depth review.
I realized two things. Yoko Kanno loves talking about the wind (kaze) and that i want to voice an anime character!
You're quite welcome. I honestly didn't think too many people remembered this classic, but the fact that there are people who do humbles me. Glad you liked it.
This was superbly done!
Fantastic video! Ive been a big old school anime fan since the early 90s and Lodoss was always a name I heard and saw but never checked out.... Until earlier today, I saw a picture of Pirotess and thought wow.... She's hot! So I googled her and found she was in Lodoss war and now your video has set me up nicely for my new discovery! Cant wait to watch this OVA! Thank you!! :D
You should! It's a classic IMO.
I love both the ova and tv series. I prefer the sub but some of the performances in the dub were awesome. I to would love to see the novels translated to english.
Before I watched the ova I listened to ova dub and thought a couple of voices were good and the rest were not so good, but after seeing this video and listening to the ova dub again I think it's a mixed bag. Learning about how the dub was done made me appreciate the dub same with tv series dub. Yeah the tv series dub wasn't great but there were a couple of highlights.
The New York dubs are amazing to behold
I've always considered the OVA dub a classic. If there were any less than perfect voices in the OVA dub it wasn't very noticable to me. Maybe some of the minor background characters, but I felt that the principal characters were all well done, with Deed, Parn, Slayn, Karla, Ashram, and Wagnard being particular standouts.
I would love for books 2-7 to be published in English.
@@RyanTurk-bk9fg Oliver Wyman, Crispin Freeman, Debora Rabbai.
You can talk good job! Keep it up thx
Anyone else hearing a bakshi gnome on the bottom left? Great video, love Lodoss!
Anyone thought that the dub opening and ending songs sounded it came from a Disney Renaissance movie.
The info in the video is fantastic. If I can recomend something it would be to loose the creator rectangle, it is only an unecessary element. Once again, it is a great video with fantastic info. Great job bro!
Glad you think so. Unfortunately, there was little I could do about the creator rectangle because I DID mean to present this as a panel, but I also wanted audiences to show who was presenting it. Truthfully, I meant to show this panel to a live audience at a con (which I was finally able to do last year at DerpyCon), but the pandemic put a stop to that. So I had no choice but to do it virtually.
Such a well-made and informative video!
Thanks so much! I really enjoyed making this one.
I cannot for the love of anime RPG, find movies like this in this new generation of anime. What we have now are just over the top in everything rpg anime. And long gone are the simple male protagonist, and in it's place are over proportioned female protagonist.
Lisa Ortiz is so awesome
Indeed. There is a reason why her turn as Deedlit stole my heart. She is the standout of the dub, although there are other great turns as well.
@@Turnajon and Slayers is her most iconic role.
A castlevania sotn clone lodoss war themed. COUNT ME IN🥰🥰🥰😄
Yeah, it looks absolutely amazing. Sadly, I don't know when it's coming.
15 min. that list is the stuff that got me into anime during 2000
We have the same personal trainer too Lol
The boy couldn't kill time if he wanted to!
That's a great line. I loved Greg Wolfe's turn as Ghim.
Interesting. Thanks for putting this together.
Thanks. Glad you liked it. I did my best to explain why the OVA dub turned out surprisingly good for its time, and why the Chronicles dub was problematic. Hope I succeeded.
Wonderful overview! Thank you.
Glad you like it. I put a lot of effort into this one, as I am a huge fan of the show. The dub in particular, really got me into it. That's why I gave a shoutout to the dub voice actors.
I wish a Broadway musical soundtrack existed for the CPM dub because most of the actors in this dub are singers as well.
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO IT’s A FANTASTIC OVERVIEW OF THIS NOW UNDER-APPRECIATED AND OFTEN OVERLOOKED SERIES.
why didn't you mention Legend of Crystania?
Time constraints. I knew there was a lot of history to cover for Lodoss, but I knew I had to do so within no more than an hour. Plus, I wasn't as knowledgable about Crystania. I hope that answers your question.
@@Turnajon
Yes it did. Thankyou.
Your vid was well made.
Why didn't you tell me you uploaded this Turnajon!? I am going to watch this later tonight, I can't get enough of Lodoss! :-)
Sorry. I guess I'm just too shy.
@@Turnajon Haha, no problem, I wasn't serious about it :-P
I wished that Lodoss war get remake today and bring back New York dubbing again.
Regrettably that may not be possible because LODOSS hasn't had a new incarnation since 1998. There were those video games, but that's about it. Who knows though. As for the NY dubbing team, a lot of the actors in the dub have either moved on or either are not doing much anymore. But I would absolutely be all for Bill Timoney and Lisa Ortiz reprising their roles as Parn and Deedlit. I can't imagine anyone other than those two in these roles. Indeed, when I presented the panel live at DerpyCon last fall, one of the audience members was absolutely thrilled to learn about the English cast. I was tickled. It showed me that whatever the internet thinks there ARE fans of the LODOSS dub in real life.
@@Turnajon I think he/she knew the cast from other New York dubs that she watched.
31:53 the stellar performance of Yakumo and Wagnard.
Bruce Winant is definitely one of my favorite performances in the OVA dub. He surpasses Oliver Wyman in the Chronicles dub. Winant has that "I'm going to rule the world" attitude and psychopathic, menacing vibe which is very appropriate for Wagnard. And his evil laugh never ceases to give me chills. His scenery chewing turn in the final episode in particular is the stuff of chills (in a good way).
@@Turnajon what other dubs are you going to review?
@@Turnajon I wish that Bruce Winant sung a villain song in the ova back in 1996.
@@dwainsimmons3447 Good question. I haven't updated my Blog about Dub Reviews in a long time. Undecided at the moment.
