- Pierre-Auguste Renoir - Filmed Painting at Home (1919)
This is unique footage of the great Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919).
He is seen at home, working on a canvas.
I'm just astonished it exists - I never imagined I'd see film of him painting - you even get a sense of his method of applying the oil to the canvas.
Also present in this footage are Renoir's youngest son Claude, 14, who stands by to arrange the palette and place the brush in his father's hand, and Sacha Guitry, the man who made this film in 1915 and who appears midway through the film sitting down and talking with the artist.
Enjoy!
"The pain passes, but the beauty remains." - Pierre-Auguste Renoir
a great truth
Yes, the old boy certainly was determined to paint. His struggle is legend. The adhesive tape wraps to cushion the palms of his crippled hands. The pain he endured. And for a long time, the poverty. Yet it was he that sustained Monet and his wife, even as he raised his own large family. This film was made in 1915, not 1919. He was 74. He died in February of 1919.
Have you seen the 2012 movie RENOIR by Gilles Bourdos? It’s a sumptuous feast of color and atmosphere. Frustratingly slow as a movie but in every way a marvelous recreation of the Master’s last year of life.
Renoir was a heavy smoker. Lived to be 79 when the average life during that time period was 50.
What a wonderful treasure this is! To see a master at work in spite of his affliction. Thank you for sharing, it made my day! Good choice of music as accompaniment.
amazing to see him still at work - and to be able to judge a little of his method of applying paint to canvas. glas you like the music - it seems to give the right reflective mood for looking back into the past.
Renoir's intentions as an artist were best summarized by his own words: "The earth as the paradise of the gods: That is what I want to paint."
that gets to the heart of his work!
As a non native speaker, can you explain to me what does that mean?
Great video! Many famous artist had physical disabilities, gericault, renoir, poussin, goya, luchian, matisse, and the list goes on and on...but the dream was pursued
I can't believe this...!!! I am watch Renoir in film.
amazing isn't it - did you see the footage of Monet painting on my channel?
Didn't get a chance but I will...!!! Thanks for reminding me.
Amazing he got anything done with so much chatting. This was just before he died. He had severe arthritis in his hands, which you can see. Sure loved to smoke.
Thank you for this enormous oportunity to see all these masters in time of creation. Regards from Brazil.
I love the way he somehow manages to hold the brush and the cigarette in the same hand in spite of the arthritis. I wish we could hear what they are saying.
hi Louise.
yes i've often wondered about the conversations they were having and wondered if lip-readers could say what they were? though if revealed maybe the discourse was banal, which could be interesting too - a real insight into the ordinary character of these artists, Renoir, Monet and so on.
@@JohnRaymondHall I'm late to the party, I know, but I was just thinking "lip readers, lip readers!" It would be so good to know what they said
@@SolloxAndTheSpooners i would so like to know - hopefully they would be saying something profound!
Thanks for this, I am crying like a baby
so powerful isn't it
Yesterday, I saw the Renoir exposition at the Kimbell Gallery. It was amazing to see the actual paint textures made by the greatest artist in history. I will treasure that hour for the rest of my life.
yes, being up close makes the technique all the more extraordinary
So glad for you that you got to go see it!
The greatest artist in history No.
Amazing he could still paint masterpieces with the rheumatism having left his hands in this shape!!!
+Edim S
yes, amazing - the way people just adjust to disability (his hands are so twisted and deformed by the disease ) and get on with things is inspirational!
MERCI POUR LA MISE EN LIGNE...TRÈS APPRÉCIÉ.
plaisir :)
Absolutely my favorite. You could see how much he loved women, they were crafted with such joy.
indeed - my sister had a Renoir print of a woman on her bedroom wall and you could see what you say
Thank you for sharing a genius of painting 🖼
my pleasure
Simply wonderful!
Outstanding footage. Thanks for posting this beautiful gem. And let's not forget Chopin.
+Steven Conrad yes, it's amazing to see this extraordinary artist at work in his studio. and yes i think the Chopin can create a nice sound environment for looking back into the past. :)
Awesome. Wish there were more film of him painting and of the other masters as well.
i wish that too - it would allow you to better see and understand their method and painting program :)
I wish that the camera man gave us a better angle from the up down to see him paint and what he is painting and how he does it. :]
This is one of my favourite films with yours. Remembering me like the Tate Galery, whence my cousin headed in Front of me, I was allmost like staying out... they asked me if I wanted to wear a students ticket (because my family members had bought that one family ticket). But when I met on Degas, old memories went overwhelming. It's beautiful when you one day or two arrived on the original.
The most beautiful thanks consists to a Lady in a wheel-chair
(electric wheel chair?), her smile was ever be like welcome and is not to be missed.
thanks for sharing that :)
Thanks for sharing this wonderful.
my pleasure :)
Merci 🙏
Très émouvant…
mon plaisir :)
hi joanne rose
never was a truer word spoken - a great artist and wise as well!
Truly a screen gem, thank you.
pleasure
Arthritis slowed him down, but did not stop him. Salut Maitre!
yes, i agree - he just seems to go on with without reference to his crippling condition.
Pierre-Auguste Renoir et Amadeo Modigliani
Le Maître et Le Modi.
C est un moment très émouvant
Thank you so much for sharing this 🦋💗
my pleasure Arlene :)
Thank you so much !!!!
+Liber Vargas you're welcome!
veryyyyy precious video.
+Masht Ali yes, i like this one the best too! you see so closely his technique and get more of a sense of him as a person. wish i could lip-read French to be able to know what they are saying
Thank u so much for sharing this :3 LOVED IT!!!!!
yes, it's amazing to see Renoir at work, isn't it!
it is :3 MARAVILLOSO!
John Hall
This is wonderful
Ppl need more exchanges like these
Would love to know what they were talking about
hi Xherri23
thanks - it is one of my favourite uploads - the music is from the 2nd Movement of Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2
cheers! :)
Wow, Thanks John for the footage
+Terry Dower it's amazing Terry to be able to see this now legendary painter at work, isn't it!
Quelle émotion! ;-)
We don't know what he was painting ....but it's so touching....
What was he saying to his family ?can we know it with our new technologies ???Would be great ...
hi Catherineone
yes, it's hard to imagine continuing to paint with such arthritis but then he had i guess the courage to think 'what else i there to do but go on'
i suspect it is an oil given the way he is applying the paint?
and it would be interesting to have a lip reader of French to be able to reveal what they are talking about, don't you think?
hi Karen
glad you like these historic documents
they are genuine and made by Sacha Guitry who filmed Renoir, Degas, Rodin and Monet just after the turn of the C20
i believe they are now in the public domain
cheers
It seems that the footage was shot in 1915, and released in 1919 by Sacha Guitry? Jean Renoir describes Renoir's struggles to continue painting despite extreme infirmity; but the work of painting seems always, in the sunshine, to be happy. When "the sun was too low, and the shadows were no longer luminous. Then his body got the better of him. His pain would grow sharper....". Jean Renoir notes that his father's last painting was of flowers: "An infection which had developed in his lungs kept him to his room. He asked for his paintbox and brushes, and he painted the anemones which Nenette, our kind-hearted maid, had gone out and gathered for him. For several hours he identified himself with these flowers and forgot his pain." (Renoir, My Father 458) (I agree with the suggestion to play this film at .5 speed, even though this affects the music. The film was probably shot at 16-20 fps, though if the camera was hand-cranked the frame rate would vary. ) Thanks for sharing.
Ok so it definitely looks like he had arthritis. I can barely see things tied around his hands. That's so amazing.
hi Nathan. yes, amazing he could keep painting at all. and so great seeing him at work, creating paintings that we now see as masterpieces, influential and iconic.
BELLISSIMO!!!! MERCI!
plaisir :)
WOW!
His son, the great Jean Renoir, is working by his side... wow!
i think you'll find it is his youngest son Claude, 14 :)
Fascinating footage
fooman65
isn't it! you even get a sense of how he went about the work of painting.
I'm obsessed with the Impressionists and any rare live footage is fantastic, Monet footage is great too. Amazing thing about Renoir is his son went on to be a celebrated film maker as well, 2 greats in different mediums.
fooman65
sadly the Degas footage is just of the artist walking down the treet
i'm fascinated by the Impressionists too - and would hate t think how long i can sit in front of a Monet waterlily painting in London!
very interesting how people can be at the top of two professions - Robert Helpmann used to perform a lead role at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stafford in the afternoon and then train done to London to perform with Fonteyn at the Royal Ballet!
Wonderful treasure
The man that sat down and is talking to him looks like the same guy who is talking to Monet in your other video of Claude Monet...I love Monet and would love to learn more about Renoir...it looks like he has the same problem with his hands that my friend has and she is always in great pain...thanks for the films...
hi Laurel
yes if my memory serves me correctly he is the son of the man whose project it was to record some of the French Impressionists, Sacha Guitry. this link tells about the filming sessions with Renoir: www.openculture.com/2012/07/astonishing_film_of_arthritic_impressionist_painter_pierre-auguste_renoir_1915.html
Amazing...
+Sashaleigh09
isn't it!
that real artist, that real art....
absolutely! did you see the Monet footage?
@@JohnRaymondHall yes yes :) ı did, he is the awesome artist. (Real artist )
yes, a real and very great artist - staring a new ear in art
I adore Renoir.
Has a lip reader any idea of what is being said?
My guess is he’s talking about corpulent women.
Mesmerizing.
+womanity constancy absolutely!
Hello,
I am writing to you because I saw this video you posted on, Renoir and others like it on Monet and Degas showing the original footage of the painters in life. I would like to have a contact from him to find out how to find the source or archive from which they can be downloaded or purchased.
I'm waiting,
Best wishes
Erica
I don't quite remember this recorded scene. But if given a choice, I would bypass the arthritis part. That was excruciatingly painful... no fun at all. I do have the left eye twitch and some remnants of the arthritis right hand and right hip. I am also an artist now and have "practiced" replicating "woman reading" easy to do. My home has many prints of my paintings. One of my favorites is "luncheon at the boating party" and "two sisters (On the Terrace)" has special meaning to me. But my all time favorite is "Dance at Bougival". An interesting record of my journey.
@@olivtwite mi no saber frances.buon giorno.😊

hola Marybel Galaaz
¿has visto el Claude Monet subir?
Well , this is Sacha Guitry film, and the Maestro is seen with his son Claude -then 14- , handing him the brushes and arranging the palette… then it would be 1915.
thanks for the correction - i had 1919 which in fact was the year of Renoir's death - 1915 is right - i've corrected the caption
....be cool to know which painting he is doing in these videos
Yeah , Thx John :)
+Terry Dower
:))
John, Thanks for sharing these. How did you come to have them? Are they authentic or did actors create them to look like they are from long ago?
Beautiful videos and music...so good to watch...does anyone know who the composer is playing the piano in this video ?Thanks for the video's...
+MB Smith thanks - the music is from the 2nd Movement of Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2 :) cheers from Sydney!
+John Hall Thank you so much John Hall...I love the music and now I know it's Chopin...and the video's ofcourse and cheers back to you from the United States....

THE MASTER.
without doubt!
hello john, wonderful video. i was wondering if you would be ok with my using it in a presentation at an educational institution re: rheumatoid arthritis.
Eυχαριστώ!!!!!!!!!
Excelente ..
:) indeed!
I could pick up a few tips on technique if you had been pointing your camera at the canvas :) Seriously, this is a good thing to share. thank you for the upload.
wooooooooooooooooooooooooow!!
hi!
yes, veeeeeeeeeeeery wow!
Yipiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!
what a rock star
Play this film at 0.5X normal speed in your RUclips player, this will give apx the correct normal speed, a completely different experience! 🎦
thanks - sadly i don't have the expertise to alter the speed - i bet it's better at a 'right' speed
Is it known what he was painting here--which piece
it is?
I think it is Les Baigneuses (aka The Women Bathers) which was painted at this time.
Is this a true piece of film work from that period..they could be silent movie actors.
wonderful that so many of the impressionists and post-impressionists were filmed
Note his hands just how bad they were.
It would have been interesting to see what he was painting, a watercolour ?
amazing, isn't it!
:)
What is the piano piece?
the beginning of the second movement of Chopin's second piano concerto
Can anyone lip read what the people in this are saying? I'm curious to know what they were talking about (big guess, the painting).
i have often wondered what they were saying and if someone could lip read and tell us - maybe someone will! :)
John Hall,.. I wish I knew who wrote that song.
Frederick chopin
the beginning of the second movement of Chopin's second piano concerto.
yes, the beginning of the second movement of his second piano concerto.
This is the year he died yet he seems active, alert, focused, talkative and personable. It would be interesting to know what painting he was working on or whether he was going through the motions for the film. Too bad film had no sound.
yes, with the Claude Monet footage you can see the painting, here not. recorded not long before sound came in in film. it could have just been staged for the camera - i suspect it was.
set speed to 0.5
much better
.75 more accurate
What was he painting? A Bather?
+BobRenoir i don't know - the angle of the camera doesn't let you see - i wish someone could lip read French - maybe the answer would be there?
The real deal 🖌️
Today it is the 100th anniversary day since Renoir passed away.
thank you for mentioning it :)
He's definitely smoking a joint
Hi John, Can you give me your contact please? I want to use this video and i need to know how can i do it :) Thank you! Heloisa
a lawyer friend whose specialty is intellectual property tells me that copyright expires 50 after the death of the last major participants and cannot be passed on - things then go into the public domain so you can use it :)
Looks like a lively conversation between Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Jean Renoir, and _______ ?
Renoir's youngest son Claude, 14. yes it would be great to have a French lip reader tell what the conversation was about
Un génie!

My thoughts, exactly. In other words (scribble, slash, loop, line, line, squggle, weird T.)

this man's a fucking lion.
yep, a lion of talent
More like “Renoir smoking while trying desperately to impress his sycophants with how great he is.”
Brilliant man, and yet, ... he is breathing smoke. Counter-intuitive.
+Richard Peninger yes, counter-intuitive - i lived in Paris as a kid and restaurants back then were often filled with smoke - a diferent time and attitude about smoking.
+Richard Peninger the fact that he smoked never made him NOT a brilliant man. A lot of artists smoke though it is true.
The greatest with Monet and van Gogh..
It seems his fingers are having Arthritis , he has problem holding the Brushes .
yes, his fingers are so very bent out of shape it's hard to imagine him painting at all.
Walter Herro
y es .
Yes, in his later years, his Arthritis was so bad, so painful, he was confined to a wheel chair and his wife or someone had to assist him with putting brushes etc in his now deformed hands. You can cripple the body, but you can't stop the drive to create.
