This is Grand Central Market. I have been going there for 50 years. It is a fun place to go and it has changed radically in the past 5 years to become a downtown hipster haven. I think of street food in LA as the unregulated street side food stands . Mostly selling Central America food. Many are quite amazing and generally very cheap. The best stalls and stands are primarily in the predominantly Hispanic neighborhoods. When people leave LA,, this is what they miss most. Tacos of all types, tamales, corn, and pupusas. YELP has made it easier to track down these vendors. Hours vary wildly, up to 3AM. There are stands that feature regional cuisine of Mexico.
Grand central market LA is overrated...by a long, long mile. Good street food in LA is a tough find. El Matador taco truck "roach coach" on Vermont & Lexington is a good start though. Also the "street dogs" wrapped in bacon in the most decrepit pockets around downtown are amazing.

Huge fan but you captured the grand central market which is totally the opposite of Los Angeles street food. You should have gone to echo Park to try Taco Zone or the many taco stands that open up at night throughout the city. For the viewers this place used to be the best place to eat in Los Angeles if you had a few bucks but now it has gone thru gentrification and is so expensive now that it only caters to the wealthy.

Complaining about latins in the market area is like going to Chinatown and complaining about the presence of Chinese. The Grand Central Market area (3rd Street/Broadway) has always had a latin presence- be it customers or vendors. So yes, back in the day, one WOULD think there were in some Latin American country if they were in the market. I can tell you the foot traffic inside the market is considerably down from the hustle and bustle that I remember as a child. BUT, there has been MASSIVE gentrification and an influx of moneyed yuppies into the area, which means an ever increasing number of white people. The market owner responds by catering to these new residents (by raising rents on long term vendors or switching from a fixed lease to month-to-month)- so out goes the carniceria or other latin vendor, to be replaced by organic meat shops, coffee shops, an egg shop, or gourmet cheese mongers. I'm not saying its good or bad, just that it is happening. Gentrification is happening throughout DTLA (Arts District, Little Tokyo, Chinatown, etc..). Here in L.A. "street food" is basically a lunch truck, which can serve anything from tacos to Asian food. In fact, only a few blocks away from the Grand Central Market, you can find a bunch of lunch trucks lined up in the Grand Park serving all manner of different foods.
