These are great fins. I have the yellow fins. Split fins are the best because they don't require as much effort to kick. How does these compare to the scubapro split fins?
Thank you all for your feedback. We truly appreciate your interest and enthusiasm. We apologize for not responding sooner, but we have been working diligently on getting our website up and running. Hi Freddie could you recommend some fins for snorkeling. these are the parameters to use 1. must be Available in the UK 2. must fit large foot UK size 12 to 13 so USA 13-14 3. easy to use on both knees and feet due to onset of arthritis (split fin maybe?) 4. light weight for transportation by plane (hand luggage?) 5. mid price range 6. not to worried about looks but a little colour would be nice 7 will be used once to twice a year (for now) I looked at the atomic split Atomic Split Fin "Smoke on the water fins you reviewed and they are quite pricy over here £239 =$270 with out shipping costs so something half that price please or best budget price but not cheap and nasty (you get what you paid for.
Hi Kevin. If you are able to get Atomic in the UK, I would suggest looking for their Split Full Foot Fins. These are much more affordable than the split full foot fins with a lot of the same great features. Their largest size is a 12 - 14, so that should work for you. I don't have a pair of these at the moment, so I can't tell you how much they weigh. I believe they come in black or yellow. Their pricing in the US is $89.95, so that is a very reasonable price for a good pair of fins that will be easy on your knees. Another fin that I have high hopes for is the TUSA Travel Right fin. These are a brand new fin that was just released and should be available to purchase very soon. You should be able to purchase them in the UK as well. They are designed to be compact and lightweight but still give you a lot of power. Hope this helps a little bit.
Question please: You said you had a pair for 15 years before giving them away.... during that time did you ever have to replace the straps? I ask as mine are 12 years old with about 50 dives on them, but I find myself feeling paranoid that the straps are getting old despite them looking fine. Please and thank you!
Hi Mark. I never did have to replace mine. That being said, i still always keep an extra strap in my Save-A-Dive kit just in case. I've heard plenty of people that were on a dive boat with a broken strap and they were out of luck because they didn't have a backup.
Thanks for the review! I've used these for prob 10 years - by far my favorite fin. But I've had a problem with now 3 pairs splitting at the top of the pocket - none of my other (myriad) fins have done that. They are expensive to replace! But I do love them. Have you heard anything like this with other divers?
Hello. I honestly have never heard of this happening. We have a ton of divers that have bought these fins and have never had any returned for that reason. If this happens again, I would contact the dive shop you purchased them from. Atomic takes great care of their customers and may possibly replace your fin for you.
Great information presented here, doing research before starting my first class, and ran across your page. Would it be possible to cut the volume of the intro splash a bit, headphone users would appreciate it.
I have one of this. It has one problem, it broke in the middle upper side, where you put your foot. I dont know how to fix it. Can you give me some advise?
I have never seen one of these to break. Wherever you bought it can probable get it replaced for you at no charge. I have tortured these to try and get them to break with no success. I even walked in them, which you are not supposed to do. Again, no breaks. My thought is that you got one with some kind of molding defect in it. Hope you can get it replaced. Freddy
Would this be available with the newer bungee heel strap today? In your opinion, are the spring or bungee heel straps worth the extra investment? Thanks.
The Smoke On The Water (color) comes standard with the spring strap. However all of the Atomic fins can be upgraded to the spring strap 5280scuba.com/product/atomic-spring-strap-pair This is the #1 upgrade that we see people doing to their fins
@@yuxef The full foot is designed to fit 3 sizes. My opinion is that they are still very good but not as good as the strap variety. Mostly because of the stiffer bottom on the strap fin. It transfers all the energy to the tip of the blade. The full foot fin doesn't. Scuba fins are stiffer than snorkeling fins. So you want to wear a bootie with them. Hope that helps.
EXCEPTIONAL REVIEW. It covers off almost everything (thanks for taking the time to make it. Are the Atomic positive or negative buoyant? I have problems with floating legs and fins which really peeves me off - just my body type. Only an issue when fully suited up, without wetsuit my body and legs are pretty neutral and easy to work the fins.
Thanks Peter! The Atomic Split fins are slightly negative. There might be other ways to help changing your body position in the water that might help - feel free to reach out to Randy (randy@5280scuba.com) for some suggestions, tips or tricks
I use smoke in the water for 10 years, still, bring in a very good performance to me. It is made in Taiwan, I live in Taiwan, but I have to go to US to get it 10 years ago.
I own the Smoke color Atomic split fin which has the spring straps, and they are very nice fins and I like them a lot. It cost $259 US dollars, but living here in Hawaii I use them a lot so I was OK with that. There is just one problem; the plastic pin that holds the spring into the buckle broke. Now it should be an easy fix to replace the pin, which should cost less than a dollar. Now that would be fair and I would even pay more for it, but Atomic Aquatics will not sell that part. They told me to buy a new set of spring straps which is $70 US dollars or about what you might pay for the average pair of new fins. I have always believed that good service after the sale of any product is a sign of a good company. I am not paying for a new set of fin straps from Atomic. I will buy some Delrin rod and try to fabricate a new pin to fix my fins. If this does not work I am buying some Scubapro fins. Scr*w Atomic Aquatics.
If I were you, I would visit your local dive shop that is an Atomic Dealer. They can probably order the part from you. As a dive shop, I have seen many times that it is easier for us to get the small little parts from them for our customers. Hope this helps.
@@coralkeyscuba Sorry but that has been tried and failed because Atomic as well as other Huish companies has no desire to sell a single part for a reasonable price. I had a similar issue with Zeagle. They are fine to sell you a $70 assembly but not the specific 25 cent part that you need. I would have paid them 10 dollars to send it to me but no way. Pretty poor customer service IMO. If you can get me the part please let me know I would be happy to deal with you, perhaps you have better contacts than my local dealer.
"product review"? i dunno man, comes off more like a paid promotIional. after using for 15 years you cant think of a single thing about the design that could be improved? if thats true you're a fool for giving away PERFECT fins!
Any product could be improved but it has to be practical. With so many reviewers we try to be unique. I'm just a guy that wants to help people do the best they can. Sorry you didn't enjoy the review but it is a great fin and I receive nothing to do the review. I even had to buy the fins to review them. I'll try and do better next time.

I have had a similar problem with my Oceanic V16 split fins i.e. they split at the top of foot pocket after 2 years of use.

Can they be used on bare foot for snorkeling?
The fins with the adjustable straps can't be worn barefoot. Atomic does, however, offer a full foot version of them that is a barefoot fin.
@@coralkeyscuba thanks for answer. Full foot version is twice cheaper... is it really the same version of fin?

how do these work with frog kick, ,helicopter and reverse kicks?
Because they have increased thrust surface, they work very well for a variety of kicks
they actually not working that good for frog and reverse.
I would like you guys to Review the Scuba Pro Seawing Gorillas.
Are they good for snorkeling in the sea
Yes. Although they are considered a Scuba fin, you can snorkel easily with them as well.
