Korg MS-20 controlled by guitar

  • Using my Gibson SG to "play" the Korg MS-20 FS, thanks to some clever patching. A cool and unusual feature of the MS-20 is that you can control the oscillators via an external pitch and they will (mostly) track the pitch. The sound you hear is coming from the oscillators in the synth, not the guitar. Playing the synth lead from Corey Hart's 1983 new wave hit, "I wear my sunglasses at night."

      That would definitely sound more like a Sammy Hagar solo track than a Van Halen song through that M-20.
      Now, if he were to play Why Can’t This Be Love, then it would sound like a Van Halen track for sure as long as he got close enough to that patch Eddie is running his Oberheim with

    could I also hook up my phone? Id love to run some tracks from it through the synth. Do I need a special cable or will a patch cable do

    • @retrokraft
      @retrokraft  14 дней назад +1

      You could hook up your phone to the external input and process sounds using the envelope and the filter. You would just need a 1/4 inch adapter to connect your phone’s output if you were using the full size MS-20.

    Green?!?!?!? What the heck? What am I seeing here? Is this an old one or is this available now? LOVE that color!

    • @retrokraft
      @retrokraft  Год назад +4

      Yes, the green is rad. Looks like a piece of antique military equipment. It's the Korg MS-20 FS (full size). Released a couple of years ago with four options including green, white, blue and the traditional black. If you search for it, you should be able to find it. They're still available I believe.

    Very cool. The black cable in the signal out on top, is that where the guitar goes? or is it the bottom external signal processor signal in?

    • @TheViolinRoom

      Oh wait I see now. This is MS20 not MS20 mini

    • @retrokraft
      @retrokraft  9 месяцев назад +1

      @TheViolinRoom yes, the plack cable is the signal out. The guitar plugs into the external signal processor.

    • @TheViolinRoom
      @TheViolinRoom 9 месяцев назад +1

      @retrokraft I tried it last night, but no sound came from me strumming. Gonna try again today and figure it out.
      There shouldn't be much difference between ms20 mini and ms20. It's just that ms20 is slightly bigger.

    • @retrokraft
      @retrokraft  9 месяцев назад +1

      @@TheViolinRoom it should work with the mini. The settings on the external processor have to be tweaked just right for it to work.

    How is this exactly done?

    • @retrokraft
      @retrokraft  Год назад +5

      Video shows the patch cord placement. You can also check out the Korg MS20 setting examples manual as this describes the basic patch:
      www.korg.com/us/support/download/manual/0/134/2442/
      In order to get it to work you have to spend a fair amount of time tweaking the levels and it is a bit finicky but makes for a cool effect.

    Where do I get a green ms20?

    • @retrokraft
      @retrokraft  Год назад +1

      It’s the Korg MS-20 FS, full size reissue of the MS-20 from Korg that came out last year I think. They make them in original black and also blue, white and green (my favorite). Check Google, looks like several retailers have them in stock.
