Hi Barry. Rob from Adelaide. Woo Hoo great video session . Loved it. You know the formula thats works for you my man. Stick with what you are doing now lower reps on the big bench days for sure going up to 160 and yes rep out on the way down. Love it. YOU GOT THIS MATE
Awesome 155 lift....Well done Barry. I used to be be pleased pressing 110 for reps. At 55 now, and multiple shoulder injuries later, only 30kg dumbells these days. Sure do miss the heavy bench days. Keep at it Barry 160 round the corner! Not many blokes lift that natural...
Brilliant barry, 155kg impressive stuff, once you get it the once,,it will always be there ,can't believe your nearly benching double your bodyweight, keep going, hats off..
👏👏👏 much better. That 160 looked a whole lot harder than that 155 did last week, it hardly moved a millimetre! TOOOO INFINITE AND BEYOOOOOOOND!!!! 💡 💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡
You are strong Barry! You haven't taken 160 Kg yet, but you're close. With the right feeling in your body and loaded and minimally with sets up to 160 Kg, you are there! 😉
I think you are going to change the title to road to 170 next couple of weeks cause you definitely have that 160 in you my friend. Great session today keep up the good work.
Outstanding session you definitely looked like you had more energy in the tank on those latter heavy pushes to give yourself a chance. Maybe go straight from 1 rep of 150 to the 160 next time. The way you thrashed that 100 about at the end was unbelievable! Well done.
That was really close, you probably allready got it tbh ; had you done 150kg then 160kg, and it might have been in the bag. The set of max rep at the end was brutal :)
Mad Barry, you will get there, 155kg seemed to move well. Static holds of the weight you are looking to push are a good method to prime your body for it
Good 155 Barry, lockout could do with a little work. Close grip bench will help. A tip that might help before your max lifts. Two slow deep breaths and then short fast breathing about 3 times before the lift. It worked well for naturals I taught as well as myself. Like a natural adrenaline.
Very impressive lifts. That 160 is coming. I reckon if you use some chalk, maybe elbow sleeves or wrist wraps or even a decent spotter juat to be in case, not really doing, your anything confidence/belief will sky rocket and that bar WILL go up.
I was definitely one of those who said less reps on the way up. You smashed that 155 mate and the fact you got the 160 off the chest probably means you need to hammer tris more!
It is absolutely there. But now you need to get really smart. Have another low volume, low intensity week. It is obvious that you struggle with the idea of taking a "deload", but think of this as a pre-competition "taper" instead - where you are preserving energy for your biggest effort next weekend. Leading into the last week of a powerlifting meet, I won't go above my openers. It is scary doing virtually nothing, and you may feel sluggish in your warm up, but you won't lose your strength in a week, and you really need to trust the work you have already done . The idea now is to fully dissipate any fatigue, in order to allow yourself to display the top end strength you've built from the earlier volume. The other key to success is to get the warm ups right and perfect the attempt selection. You are heading in the right direction by doing lower reps up to that top single, but today's experiment shows that the leaps from 140 to 155 and then 160 were too much. 160 was your target, but you effectively hit an 87% single at 145, and a 95% single at 155, before trying that intended 100% at 160. The last rep of the 5 at 100kg was also grindy. Those earlier efforts sapped too much from your final attempt. Save that energy for the top single and it will go. Give it a very light week and train at the same time next week (don't be tempted to repeat this before then to allow the fatigue from today's max effort session to go). Treat next week as your own personal competition. Do nothing the day before to totally relax. Eat and drink the same as you have done today for consistency and start with a few very, very, light dumbbell presses and/or a few band pull-aparts - just to get the blood flowing. That is a warm up, so don't go anywhere near failure. Take a full 10 minute rest and then go with just the bar for 10 reps. Hit only 3 reps with 70kg and then go with singles at 100, 130 and 145. As you go through the singles, make the rest periods gradually longer, until you are resting for 6 to 7 minutes before your final attempt, and are fully recovered and ready to go. Your ATP stores take 3-5 minutes to refresh after a heavy set, so give yourself as much rest as you can. Then watch a Chuck Vogelphol video on RUclips, get some thrash metal on the stereo, stick some smelling salts up you nose, bang your head on a wall, imagine that the barbell is a car on top of a loved one that you have no choice but to move............. and blast that 160 up!
10 x 10s at this point is the equivalent of warming up for sprint by doing a marathon. But if you really must do it, hit it very early in the week and use something like a Dumbbell Larsen Press. Give yourself at least 72 hours between that session and your next attempt at 160kg and don't do another bench session before your next shot at 160. Larsens won't let you use much weight because of the instability, and you'll, hopefully, recover quickly enough to avoid it leaving you so fatigued and sore that it interferes with your next shot at 160kg.
Perfectly done today you need to get three reps at 150kg to get the 160kg you definitely had two there with how fast the bar went up your energy level was though the roof today good to see . Solid liftoffs great bar path better control of the weight today also your bar speed was much better and your ladder up to 160kg was spot on you got this can’t wait for the next session 🥂
I don`t mean to be a dick Wesley but 150kg for 2 reps equates to 160kg on my 1rm calculator. I hit 160kg recently at the end of my bench program and know theres no way I could have hit 3 reps on 150kg. As I said.. I don`t mean to be a dick :)
@@timatkinroofing6876 difference in opinion is all I would guess your first rep at 150kg moved real fast? I’m not saying it couldn’t be done with two reps at that weight but think it would be easier and safer at 3 reps just my experience I really don’t give much faith on one rep calculators I once benched 225 for 35 reps and struggled with a365 max the calculator said 389 congrats on your 160kg what’s next for you 🥂
@ I’m running the bench program again and planning to attempt a new personal best on 5th of February. My 61st birthday. After that I’ll be starting my throwing training. I compete in British masters athletic meetings. Looking forward to the spring
@@timatkinroofing6876 I am training my two boys for American football there 15-16 this month part of there program is the Russian bench press program . Are you running your own program? Are you doing Highland Games wow total respect cheers
so my Daughter said to me 3 days off of the mussle group i worked out she just started the gym from seing me happier since i srarted back in march is this true tho i dont like taking any days off apart from sunday as thats gods day
@barrythomsonlifts you was laying down on the bench press for about 1 minute before you attempted the 160kg reckon you could of got it less time to think
Yes Sir, I knew you had it with the 140 speed, bar path and body tension - get some. More aggression at next 160. I would do 60, 110 x 3, 130, 140, 5 min rest assault 160, slightly faster controlled down, life depends on it up with perfect form.
Well done mate. You will be celebrating the 160 KG very soon. Been a pleasure watching you on your quest mate.
Thanks Craig.

Cheers mate. Got myself hyped for that session.
It's better to try and fail then never try at all. I want to see you do 160kg in the next video :)
Next heavy session I'll go again. Got few volume sessions first
Go on! You've got that 160 very soon mate
Cheers Michael

Want to lift it raw. Not one straps wraps etc
Wrist wraps is fine mate they're allowed in raw powerlifting only the sleeves aren't.@@barrythomsonlifts
Nice session, 160kg will be next to fall!
Thanks mate
Hahha well done Barry smashed that 100kg
Cheers dude 👍
I was definitely one of those who said less reps on the way up. You smashed that 155 mate and the fact you got the 160 off the chest probably means you need to hammer tris more!

Cheers mate. Well done on getting the 120kg
That 160kg was so close
Hoping so
5kg.........ohne Doop in einem. Monat???? Fast unmöglich.
We'll see
You doing that without safety bars, or a spotter. Madness. What you going to do if you tear a pectoral ? Courting disaster. Don’t risk it.
I've got safety bars on rack thats how the 160kg fail didn't cut me in half.
@ I couldn’t watch it to the end as I couldn’t see any bars. I didn’t want to watch an accident. Glad you’ve got bars.
You took too long thinking about it!should of just got down there done it less time thinking about it next time
Need rest.
@barrythomsonlifts you was laying down on the bench press for about 1 minute before you attempted the 160kg reckon you could of got it less time to think
@bantakingbantaking4298 agree
10 kg. Ohne Mittelchen ist nicht drinne. Denn die 5 kg in einem Monat ist schon Grenzwertig.
I'll take borderline
Ur getting 160 off ur chest barry,a another step closer
Exactly 💯
Go on son!!!!
Lets go!!
Yes Sir, I knew you had it with the 140 speed, bar path and body tension - get some. More aggression at next 160. I would do 60, 110 x 3, 130, 140, 5 min rest assault 160, slightly faster controlled down, life depends on it up with perfect form.
