'The university fears us': Inside University of Michigan's Gaza student encampment

  • At this very moment, a student-led grassroots movement is spreading throughout the country, with over 100 encampments going up at different college and university campuses around the country and around the world in protest of Israel’s US-funded genocidal war on Gaza and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. In what is being called the “student intifada,” students, faculty, grad students, and other campus community members are exercising civil disobedience, occupying space on campuses, defying brutal repression from administrators and police, combatting skewed and wildly lopsided narratives in corporate media, and pressuring their universities to “disclose and divest” their investments in companies and financial institutions connected to Israel.
In this urgent podcast, we take you to the frontlines of struggle and speak directly with student and grad student organizers of the Gaza encampment at the University of Michigan’s flagship campus in Ann Arbor. As the Michigan Daily, the student newspaper, reports, “The encampment was organized by the TAHRIR Coalition, a student-led coalition of more than 80 organizations including the U-M chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace and Students Allied for Freedom and Equality. The encampment follows six months of student protests for the University’s divestment, which began with a sit-in at the President’s house in October. Since then, students have continuously organized protests across campus demanding the University divest from Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.” TRNN’s Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez (who is an alumnus of the University of Michigan), speaks with Salma Hamamy, an undergraduate at UM and president of Students Allied For Freedom and Equality (SAFE), and Ember McCoy, a graduate student worker and department organizer in the Graduate Employees Organization (GEO).
Editor's Note (5/1/24): This episode was recorded on Mon. April 29, before the stunning and violent police raid of the Columbia University encampment on the night of April 30.

They are called DPS troops, Dept of Public Safety.

US politicians in general, agree with or submit to a Neoconservative agenda which believes in US imperialist control over the world. Israel is a vassal state, who has extreme influence over US politics because Israel is of strategic and military importance to the Neoconservative imperialist project.
Knowing this the only thing that will substantially change this particular scenario is a retreat of US imperialism in general.
This could happen, in a similar way that the UK empire declined, which meant a withdrawal of its colonialism.
In comparison of empires people ought to gain an understanding as to how different UK colonies gained independence, like India or South Africa.

Do you understand that many Jewish families who stood with MLK are now standing up for their right to exist? MLK was a large supporter of Zionism, and Jewish Zionist were very much involved in the civil rights movement.
He said, just days before his death:
Peace for Israel means security, and we must stand with all of our might to protect its right to exist, its territorial integrity and the right to use whatever sea lanes it needs. I see Israel, and never mind saying it, as one of the great outposts of democracy in the world, and a marvelous example of what can be done, how desert land can be transformed into an oasis of brotherhood and democracy. Peace for Israel means security and that security must be a reality.

    • @claystore
      @claystore Месяц назад

@@lrmryDo I understand that the Jews are fighting for their right to exist? Of course I do. Their response to October 7 has not widened their circle of friends, it has done the opposite. I don't even understand what their thinking was/is. Some response was needed but this is far beyond a response. As for MLK, I'm sure he would have condemned Hamas' action. He supported Israel's right to exist, as you noted. But he was a firm believer in non-violent action. So he would support Israel's continued existence but not at the expense of Palestinians. What is Israel is doing goes far beyond self defense. 35k people. DEAD. Unbelievable.

The graduate student union and LEO at UMich are the most powerful in the US. Faculty and admin highly favor the graduate students' union because they do so much of the faculty's work unlike other universities. Lecturers, on the other hand, who teach the majority of courses have had to rally hard to secure a living wage from the behemoth administration and treated with disdain. This University is purely interested in protecting its endowments and to hell with anyone outside of graduate student instructors. This podcast was like listening to a coffee klatch of valley girls who end every statement as a question (rising intonation). Don't hear this from students on other univ campuses. This was a poor, unsubstantive interview.

However, the power of global justice is awakening. No matter how far apart they are, good people unite to speak out for Palestine, which suffers injustice. Especially young students, they bravely stand on the right side of history. Even if they face dropping out of school, losing their jobs, or even being imprisoned, they will never give in to injustice. Their persistence and sacrifice are like a beacon piercing the darkness and illuminating the path to justice, proving that the real future belongs to the young generation who have the courage to defend justice and are not afraid of hardship. America- THIS IS ABOUT MONEY-Endowments, tuition fees, research grants, alumni donations and other revenue streams contribute towards financial stability and support their educational aims. As of the 2021/22 academic year, Ivy League institutions generated $40.61 billion in total revenue.
The federal government provides enormous subsidies to the wealthiest universities by paying “overhead” on research grants. Ivy League universities received $1.8 billion for government-funded research grants despite having $192 billion in endowment funds.
      - The universities take GRANT MONEY, the tuition Money, and endowments and invest in MILITARY corporations like NORTHROP, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and take the PROFITS in the BILLIONS (40.64 BILLION) and funnel it through endowments to countries like Israel. WHO then use it to BUY weapons from those same corporations.
With the profits the universities make why is any student in America paying tuition? These universities make enough money a year to pay for your education, your kids education, and your grandchildren’s education. However, they instead give it to countries like Israel who turn around and give it to the U.S. MILITARY corporation and government to buy weapons.
-THIS IS WHY THESE POLITICIANS ARE SO ANGRY AND WILL SMEAR ANYONE BECAUSE REMEMBER THE MILITARY CORPORATIONS GIVE CAMPAIGN MONEY TO THESE IDIOTS.
