- This has to be one of the most intriguing releases I have gotten in a while just because of all the bad things I've heard about the 4K transfer. So I took a gamble on it and I honestly think the gamble has paid off. So for this video I am going to be unboxing and reviewing my latest 4K Blu-ray steelbook pickup of Friday The 13th. I will also be showing 4K comparisons.

Hey Keith, glad you picked this up. We had talked a while ago about this. I remarked something to the effect that I thought it looked better than the fog I had to watch them back to back first the fog then this don’t get me wrong The fog looks excellent very moody atmospheric but like you said, this is so engaging, the outdoor scenes pop, great bold natural colors and the night scenes. The blacks are fantastic, and the headlights and the flashlight, great specular highlight there are scenes in this that are definitely demo material.
It’s funny, we have basically the same television and basically the same Blu-ray 4K player so we’re seeing pretty much the same thing I don’t know what some people are seeing I’ve set up many televisions over the years and I’ve been shocked by people not having any clue sharpness and contrast jacked all the way up vivid mode, etc. i’m glad you like this one. I wanted to rave about it at the time but I didn’t want to spoil it so I’m glad you got the surprise. Have a great one as always.👍
Honestly John this has to be the most surprising 4K transfer I have ever seen. I highly rate the fog on 4K and just like yourself I might actually put this one ahead of it. I honestly do not understand why it got the bashing it received. I don't know what people are expecting for a movie that came out in 1980. Like I said in the video there are some minor issues and to be honest I don't even like talking about them that's how minor they are and how little I care about them. I've said it numerous times but yes your equipment players a huge role when it comes to 4K and it probably explains why you enjoyed Friday the 13th as much as myself because as you mentioned we have the exact same equipment. Now I have mine professionally calibrated but having said that I do know my way around a TV and it was already looking amazing before I got it calibrated. At the end of the day John you're happy with the movie I'm happy with it and I think that's the most important thing. I could do with a few more surprises like this.
Nice looking steel book Keith. The review on the discs, when you change from blu ray to 4k, the 4k looks so much more alive and organic. So thank you again Keith, definitely gonna get this one, if it`s not sold out.

I really appreciate your analysis on this one. I’m trying hard to understand all the basics of 4k transfer analysis as I’m super into the hobby.
My set up is a native Sony vlp-xw5000 laser projector that I have going through a HD Fury VRROOM 8k converter to “trick” the projector to display in LLDV (Low Latency Dolby Vision) and HDR.
Now, I know some will say it isn’t displaying true dolby vision and they’d be right, but it’s the closest you get on a projector.
All that said, the best view you can probably get today is on an OLED TV. But for me, nothing quite beats a home theater “feel” other than with a projector.
I thought this transfer looked amazing on my elite screen cinegrey screen. I was blown away by the color and detail. Even took some screenshots right from my screen and put them in a recent video of my week 3 - 31 days of horror update of recent films I’ve watched.
I didn’t even know this transfer received the hate it did. I’m going to now go back to the few parts you bring up to see if I can see what you’re talking about. My system is professionally calibrated too and I’m running a Panasonic UB-800 as my player all into a Denon 3800h as the brains of my home theater with a 11.2 Atmos Klipsch speaker setup.
So as you can tell - I’m pretty serious about the hobby.
I’ll be watching, subscribing, and paying attention to your channel more in hopes of understanding the 4k transfer details.

To be honest I'm still trying to learn the basics when it comes to 4k. It is a learning curve and I feel I'm getting better and better every time I review a movie.
I do love my OLED TV but I am looking into getting a projector as well sometime in the future. I'm just taking my time and doing my homework to make sure that I get the right set up for my environment. Looking forward to that day.
Great to hear that you thought the transfer was as good as I thought it was and yes it was getting an absolute bashing online and for the life of me I do not understand why. It is easily the best the movie has ever looked and some of the black levels that I've seen on this is some of the best I've ever seen and that's saying something.
I noticed by the way we have the same 4K player but unfortunately I think mine is starting to pack in. I'm going to try and buy the same 4K player but this time a region free version so I can pick up all those scream factory titles on Blu-ray that I've missed out on. It's definitely one of the best most affordable 4K players out there.

@@millerman9991 - you may or may not be aware, but there is a hack to getting our UB-800 player play different region discs. It’s worked for me every time on the many region B discs I order from out your way (Radiance / Arrow / Umbrella) just to name a few.
When the screen pops up showing the “will not play screen” press the “stop button” on the remote then quickly press the “top menu” button 5-7 times.
Sometimes you got to do it a few times but it’s always worked for me. Right after the main menu pops right up and away you go.
Figured I’d share while you still have it. Give it a try and let me know if it works for you as it does me. 😉
Someone actually gave me that hack and unfortunately it didn't work on my end and apparently it will not work on any scream factory titles and that's the only region locked movies I actually have in my collection believe it or not. It doesn't matter because like I said my player is fading away so I will definitely pick up a region free version
@@millerman9991- interesting…maybe it has to do with the year your model was produced? To me it feels like I already have a region free player because of the ability to use the hack. One more question, how can you tell your player is starting to go bad? What’s going on with it? More for me selfishly I guess so I can look out for the signs. I’ve had mine less than a year. How long have you had yours?
When it comes to projectors and 4k - I know a thing or two so as you explore those rabbit trails feel free to reach out. Happy to help or share experience / knowledge if I can.
There is two things happening with my player quite regularly at the moment. One of the things that's happening is my 4K discs are not starting straight away. I have to put it in and out of my player once or twice before it starts. Not only that but sometimes not all the time but sometimes the picture starts breaking up and pixelating.

I'm still trying to find the time to watch them Conor. There's that many movies coming out this month it's very hard to keep on top of things. Even this week I've got deluxe Editions for the Exorcist Hannibal and hellraiser. But I will get back to you when I see them

I thought I ought to drop in here to say well done Keith. I suspect quite a few comments will want to disagree with you but it's great that you told it as you saw it. All our systems are different and it does seem to explain why some people think there is something wrong with a home video disc when quite often there is very little or nothing worth complaining about or even mentioning. We had it with The Exorcist a bit and mainly a few short shots that lasted seconds that could have been better. The one bad one I picked up on no one else seemed to mention so that might have been down to my system as much as anything else.

We have spoken about this so many times John and how everybody's equipment is different and chances are you are going to get a different viewing experience. But what really bothers me is when people start nitpicking at things that only take up around two to three minutes of the entire movie. Normally I don't like addressing things like that because it's not worthy of my time that's how little I care about it but the amount of things that I've heard when it comes to this transfer and how untrue it all is is borderline frightening. The most important thing in the end is how I felt about it and I thought it was absolutely extraordinary and I would love for you to pick it up someday and here your thoughts on it. Bear in mind it is incredibly darker but like I said in the video it lens so well to the creepy Factor that the movie has already. Thank you for stopping by and I hope all is well with you and Susie.

I sent you an email yesterday about Film Is Fabulous! but don't worry about it if you've already done this week's videos I thought it might be something interesting for you to include given the missing television programmed from the 1960's news that we'll be revealing lots more about on the day. I haven't seen Friday The 13th for years now. i enjoyed it as a youngster but I find most of the slasher type of films a bit silly these days. I was given 'Bay of Blood' a few years ago and I thought it was awful so it's been a surprise to learn that a lot of people who comment on our channels absolutely love that film and others of its kind. I think Friday The 13th is far more appealing so maybe one day I'll finally give it another chance. I don't think I'd ever bother with any of the sequels though. I got as far as the 3D episode and that was enough for me. Keep up the good work and enjoy the sunny weather!

I actually had the 4K on pre-order but cancelled when I saw the screen-caps up on caps-o-holic. -- there's very little difference even when zoomed in and the 4K transfer just looks way too dark in a couple of shots. I grabbed that Shout Factory Deluxe boxset for relatively cheap and I see no real reason to upgrade for now.
By the way, I have to say, you're quietly becoming one of the best channels for this sort of thing on RUclips - I hope you know that. You're such a great resource for us Yanks about all the goodies that are coming out in the UK and Europe.
Hey Tom. The one thing I forgot to mention in the video is how good the actual Blu-ray looks and I wouldn't blame you for sticking with the shout factory release. Having said that I can tell you now there is definite differences with this 4K release and it's not just a darker image. Colors are definitely a lot more pleasing particularly it's black levels which is head and shoulders ahead of the Blu-ray release. There is some nice increase in fine detail as well. Unfortunately some of it is hidden because it is considerably darker but like I said in the video it lends so well to the movie itself.

Cool release mate , i only have the blu ray of this which im happy with , i watched again last week on my Halloween countdown month with my son , i love the movie too always have , i watched it back on the big screen when it was first released in 1980 which was a great viewing back then .

Your equipment is so incredibly important when it comes to 4K transfers like Friday the 13th. It definitely lends more to OLED owners I would have to say so you could fully appreciate the black levels that you see on this release which is some of the best I've ever seen. This is one great looking steel book Keith, I love the eye on the front. And it is by far the best of the franchise. I really love Harry Manfredini's score at the end, it gets me every time. Great to hear the transfer on this is the best it's been.
Great to hear that I'm not on my own when it comes to being my favorite in the franchise. It's a fantastic looking edition with an equally beautiful looking transfer and if you have the means to check this one out Gary I definitely recommend doing so. It was so strange watching on 4K because it's looks so different.
Yes I would love to see this one on 4K, I know you don't get the full appreciation on the screen showing us the difference between versions but you can see to some extent the difference. I would like to ask you regarding your Sony 65A90J OLED TV, you mention also in this video that your TV is professionally calibrated for the 4K movies.
Have you done the calibration yourself through Settings or a has it been done by a service technician from Sony?
It was actually a friend of mine who is a service technician but it's definitely not for Sony. I have to admit I had the TV calibrated myself and I know my way around a TV but he did take it up a couple of notches in terms of colour density. That's the one part of calibrating I'm a little hazy on. But if you have the means to get your television professionally calibrated I would definitely recommend looking into it.
I saw this at a Drive-in Theater during the Summer of 1980. I was 12 years old. The ending scene gave me nightmares for a long time. Looking back on it now, I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. I agree with your analysis of the overall picture quality. I'm an avid home theater enthusiast. A large chunk of my 'play money' is spent in that arena. I also collect physical media. I picked up this movie on 4K when it first became available. My current system: Samsung S90C 4K OLED 77" TV, Samsung 9.1.4ch Dolby Atmos/DTS:X Soundbar, and a Panasonic DB-UB9000 4K UHD Blu-ray Player.
Wow I can only imagine what kind of an experience that must have been. It's one thing seeing it at the age of 12 but to actually see it in a drive-through is something rather special and I would do anything to be able to do that myself. I was absolutely ecstatic with how the movie looked on 4K and I still don't understand why it got the bashing it got. But look at the end of the day I'm very happy with it and I think that's the most important thing. Oh by the way you're set up sounds absolutely amazing.
Before watching your video I wasn't aware that there was so much negative feedback concerning this 4K transfer. The movie was made on a relatively low budget. Needless to say this wasn't a Lucas, Spielberg, or Scorsese production. You wouldn't know that though if you looked at the profit margins it made in 1980 ticket sales . It was very successful at the box office and in my opinion the restoration we see now looks very good.
@ericlozen9631 yeah the movie was getting an absolute bashing online when it comes to its 4K transfer and it's why I didn't pick up the standard release when it first came out. So I decided to take a gamble and I'm so happy I did. I honestly do not know what people are expecting when it comes to a movie like Friday the 13th. My god it came out in 1980 and it looks almost perfect. What more do they want.

Very nice slipcase and i thought they might have differentiate the 4k steelbook from the bluray ones we have. I do like that dark tone from the 4k in the screenshots. You have to wonder what kind of sets some people are using, possibly 4k lcd,s ect. Id love to know what they're planning with 4k friday the 13th, makes it scary to commit to certiain releases.
Hey Steve. If there's ever a time that you pick this movie up on 4K could you please get back to me and let me know what you thought of its 4K transfer. It can't just be me that thought this looked absolutely incredible. Yes it is considerably darker over the previous Blu-ray but like I said in the video it lends well to the movie itself. The HDR colors are absolutely jaw-dropping. I love the slipcover you get with the Steelbook aswell. This was definitely a surprise purchase and I'm so happy I pulled the trigger. I have a PS5 and a cheap 4k TV and it looks too dark ,but if I mess with settings, it can help with the darker scenes.
I did a comparison and prefer my scream factory version slightly as on my screen the colors like the skin tones of the campers swimming in the lake look less yellow/ more natural. But I do enjoy the 4k with its HDR.
I think your right about this release, if you have a good OLED and 4k player it will look really good and better than the remastered blu ray.
I'm planning to buy an OLED when they are cheaper.
Nice steelbook hopefully Paramount will do the rest in 4k.
Like I said in the video it comes down to equipment in the end because you mentioned skin tones looking a bit yellow where I seen none of that on my setup. Skin tones looked beautifully natural. As a matter of fact you can actually see it in some of the comparisons that I put up. There's no question about it it's a much darker looking movie but as I said it lends well to the movie. The HDR is the game changer and I thought it looked up absolutely fantastic. @@millerman9991The yellow skin tone and tints on my 4k screen happens when there's sunlight and the whites colors such as the rafts and clouds are blooming. The indoor scenes look fine, no yellow tints or bloom. I don't know why it does that, I definitely need to get an OLED and decent 4k players to see the improvement. OLED is a real game changer particularly for myself. Once you go to OLED there's no going back. Hopefully someday you can get one and see it for yourself. By the way thank you so much for your support and I hope you do stop by and check out my exorcist edition. It's a beautiful release
I think the sta card Paramount 4k transfer of Friday The 13th is pretty great. I picked it up a month or so ago and at first I agreed with the general consensus that it was "dark". Then I picked up Alien : 6 film Blu-ray collection, popped in Alien and it was way too dark. So I went into my TV picture setting, raised the preset brightness from "Normal" to "Bright" and it 100% fixed ithe darkness problem and every other movie I have. I realized Sleepy Hollow was also too dark even though it wasn't so dark it was a problem. That setting made it better. Fixed with just that setting.
So yeah, I think it looks great. Awesome transfer.
I have said it numerous times but it's all down to your display and how it's set up. I have seen it so many times just as you said people with sharpness levels up to the max as well as brightness and chances are they would have the colour setting on vivid. They don't realize how much they're taking away in terms of picture quality by maxing everything out. Sleepy Hollow has specific look to it and to be honest it was always a dark looking movie. I still think it's probably one of the best looking 4K transfers I've seen this year.
Splendid video Keith, that Waxwork Records edition is pretty gorgeous, I need it now lol. Im so glad youre pleased with the picture mate, to be honest the grain or noise didn't really bother me, in fact when Annie goes over to the dog and strokes him, it looked pretty damn great. It's the dark scene's that I found atrocious. When the close up shot of just the face says KILL HER MOMMY, KILL HER - only half the face was visible, the other half was just total darkness. However I'm a Friday The 13th nut so I was gonna get it anyway and even though I still think it's pretty poor, I'm hoping to get that edition as well lol. Great video though mate 👍
Hey Nige. I would do anything to get the entire waxwork collection and hopefully someday I will. Yeah you're absolutely correct when it comes to Annie and the dog it's such a beautiful looking scene and even though the background can look somewhat noisy it never distracted me from that scene or from any of the scenes at the start of the movie. I know the transfer looks considerably darker over the 4K release but honestly Nige I don't care. The black levels on this release is some of the best I have ever seen on a 4K release and I think it added something in terms of creepiness to this already creepy movie. It's a shame you didn't get as much out of it as I did.

As far as I'm aware of it's the exact same 4K transfer. I couldn't imagine them doing anything different

I thought the 4K transfer was excllent. The HDR10 was looking good and as you say, this is the best this movie has every looked on physical media.

I know sometimes cex is hit or miss but I found 3:10 to yuma blu ray steelbook for 8 quid they are selling for 40 on eBay ATM there prices are so wild to either sell something to dear or something so cheap it's a steal lol
Wow Jonny I think you done incredibly well and I know that Steelbook you are talking about and it's a beautiful release. Sometimes you can find a hidden gem in CEX. It's a shame it doesn't happen too often
Hi Keith, someone should raise that with those disc manufacturers to stop using glue on a J-card (which some of them already do), it destroys the artwork, had same issue as you did, same goes for the securing crystal in The Vault Range, no imaginaiton on the side of those who manufacture
You're absolutely correct. I don't understand why they simply cannot have the J card floating on the slip cover like a lot of what you see on steelbook releases. Those glue spots can be lethal at times. Thankfully it didn't destroy the slip cover but it does frustrate me that I nipped a little bit of the paper off. The film vault range is another great example. Hopefully fingers crossed on the next releases they will address that problem. They must be well aware of it.
I’ve got this steelbook, only difference is mine is just the blu ray. It is a nice steelbook though.
Yeah I actually have the Blu-ray edition myself. Actually I have all four that have come out and I hope they continue. I couldn't say no to the 4K release.
I think there is a problem where the more niche collecting has got, the more we're getting fussy 'experts' picking over video and audio, wanting to let everyone know they're a customer and they'll shout from the rooftops that they're refunding over either a spot of grain or a spot of DNR with a whiff of 'I'll take my custom elsewhere', this release being a case in point.
You are absolutely spot on Leigh and to be honest normally I don't like nitpicking when it comes to 4K transfers because half the time people wouldn't even notice it. But it does really annoy me when people complain about a certain aspect of picture quality and it's only on a handful of scenes and then say the entire transfer is rubbish because of them scenes. Seriously who gives a s***. Why can't they just sit down and enjoy what's on show.
I personally didn’t think this looked too dark on my TV. I often wonder what the conditions are like and equipment people who complain about 4Ks being too dark are using. I don’t do any serious watching until it gets dark outside and can get my living room super dark, just makes sense when you have an OLED TV. Anyways I did notice some clipping in the highlights so I do feel like this could have been done better and might’ve been pushed out before it really should’ve been. Still, I didn’t really feel like it being too dark was the issue.
To be honest I welcome very dark movies mainly because I do have a fantastic Sony OLED TV and some of the black levels I've seen on this 4K transfer is honestly some of the best I've ever seen. I honestly do not understand why people are bothered by the darker picture because like I said in the video it does lend well to the movie itself. Of course there is issues and it is by no means a perfect 4K transfer but it is an improvement over the Blu-ray and considerably so in certain areas. I'm very happy I pulled the trigger in the end and picked it up. Thank you so much for checking it out
Hi Keith, this is a movie that I have never seen. Is it similar in content to Halloween '78 where the killings are not too graphic or is it a real gorefest. I like Kevin Bacon as an actor so was thinking of buying but I hate graphic killings on screen.
Last time I saw it I don't remember it being gory at all.
There is a bit more to it in terms of gore particularly when you stack it against Halloween which doesn't show a drop of blood. I don't think it will bother you too much if I'm completely honest.

The Paramount steelbooks always give me mixed bag feelings with the slipcover. I absolutely adore how beautiful they are. The Ring, Cloverfield, This one, the Running Man, Event Horizon etc. But I have all my steelbooks together on the shelves and my OCD kicks in when a few of those carton spines break the beautiful look of all the steelbook spines next to each other. Estheticly for a collector with OCD not the best.
About the transfer. What I notice in your side by sides is that I find the blu ray also very acceptable in the transfer department. So that's the big question. If you have the blu ray, is the 4K a real upgrade?
No this is not a UK release I got it from the States. I paid a little more than I wanted to but it's a release I needed to have.
I completely understand where you're coming from when it comes to slip covers on Steelbooks thankfully I'm not as bad as yourself but I can understand why it would frustrate people.
Yes I forgot to mention in the video how beautiful the Blu-ray looks and trust me when I say you are getting an upgrade particularly in color and massively in black levels. But in terms of Sharpness it's identical to the Blu-ray. To be honest Robert most of the upgrades I see is mainly on color. I'm not going to lie I was blown away by the 4K transfer
Finished the entire Friday the 13th franchise plus Freddy vs Jason and the 2009 remake (both the Theatrical Cut plus the Extended Edition) over two evenings last week. Then rewatched the first movie again listening to the audio commentary which I thought was just average. I am both surprised and disappointed that such an iconic movie as this doesn't have a lot more audio commentaries. Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives has *FOUR* audio comms! 🤔
Audio commentaries is something I need to get into a bit more. I have checked out a few in my time but nothing near as much as I would like. I think the best one I've ever heard is the thing with John Carpenter and Kurt Russell. I'm almost certain both of them wore drunk while doing the commentary.
@@millerman9991 - I got back into listening to audio commentaries back in 2019 after a very long break (10+ years). Listened to 44 that year including all three on Mission: Impossible Fallout back-to-back after first rewatching the movie on 4K. Yes, that’s right I watched the movie four times back-to-back in the same day. 🤓😎

@@millerman9991 - There are six audio commentaries in total for The Thing (two by John Carpenter and Kurt Russell, one of which is uncensored!). Horror movies seem to get the most love when it comes to audio commentaries. 👍🏻
It's funny you said that because most of the audio commentaries that I've listened to are horror. Mainly John Carpenter ones
I bought the standard US release a couple of weeks ago and also don't get the complains. it is a bit darker as the shout BluRay, which is typical for HDR, but not by much. And some noise or stronger grain at parts is kinda part of what this movie is. It's a beautiful looking transfer and better looking then some of the bigger releases from paramount themselves.
I really believe that people that complain are people that have their TVs set to Vivid Color with Noise Reduction and Motion Blur on Max 😂
You know what there could be some truth behind what you said there when it comes to the way people have their TVs set up. Vivid color would definitely cause a lot of issues as well as having the sharpness up too high. Noise reduction another feature that is absolutely useless and you wonder why they even come with TVs. I was absolutely blown away by the 4K picture on Friday the 13th and I do not understand why it got the bashing it got. I think sometimes people like to complain just for the sake of complaining. Unfortunately it's the world we live in
@@millerman9991 I had many discussions with colleauges and friend that buy new big TVs, put it in the living room and use it without any setup. everythi g just crsnked up from the factory, which usually means all the awful presets. But a lot of people just don't care, they also say that motion blurr makes the movies look better... But it is all a combination, watchi g with lights on, screenbrightness on max, vivid color on etc so ofcourse blacks will look bad, grain looks like a mess etc. People are also "spoiled" by releases of new movies. Crystal clear picture, bright colors and expect that from a cheaply filmed slasher thats several decades old. Even if the transfer would be worse then it is, it is incredible that we get those kind of releases at all
To be honest I care more for the older releases than I do when it comes to the newest. Sometimes when you get a transfer that looks absolutely beautiful on an older movie it can sometimes feel like you're watching it for the first time and that's exactly what I got with Friday the 13th. It's such a gift and it's probably why I had my TV and audio setup professionally calibrated. I could do a good job on it myself but there are certain aspects where I felt like a lost boy

Seeing companies and studiostreating older Movies, even the not so popular ones, with the respect and care like other institutians do with for example books is just great to see. Friday is definatly one of the best and i do hope paramount will bring out at least some of the other Parts in the future.

I should have my hellraiser edition tomorrow and I had every intention of doing a 4K review for each movie but unfortunately I don't know when I will be able to watch them so I've decided to show my entire hellraiser collection instead which I think could be fun. You have to let me know what bloodline is like because it's the only one out of the four I haven't seen

Sounds like you are genuinely very happy with the way the film looks. Certainly the shots you showed were indeed lovely! Please forgive me for being so annoying about this, but can you please mention if the accompanying Blu-ray is also from the new 4k transfer? To be totally honest, I DO love your videos and your style, but it seems like perhaps you are not as interested in telling us about how the Blu-ray also looks, especially compared to earlier Blu-ray releases. I do apologize for continually pestering you about this, but as exciting as your videos are, just always hearing only about the 4k and not the accompanying Blu-ray unfortunately at this point is not terribly helpful for me.

You have to understand I'm reviewing the 4K transfer. I've already reviewed the Blu-ray years ago and I didn't want to repeat myself if I'm completely honest. This video was dedicated to my first ever purchase of Friday the 13th on 4K so all my attention was going towards the 4K transfer and I hope you can understand that. The Blu-ray on this release is not based off a 4K master. Having said that it looks absolutely fantastic and I think anyone would be happy with the Blu-ray alone
@@millerman9991 I understand mate, but perhaps if you could mention in these reviews IF the Blu-ray is the same as the old release OR if it is based upon the new 4k transfer, that's all I mean. So, maybe just a brief statement whether that is the case or not if you don't mind, thanks! That would really help me because then I would know whether to bother to look for the new Blu-ray or if I don't have to bother because it is the same one that I already have.
To be honest half the time I never even think of it. You have to understand none of what I do is scripted everything flows out of me. So there's always a chance that I will miss out on something when it comes to a review. But I strive to be better and I'll try to be better
