How I got scholarships to Harvard and Oxford - and how you can too!

- Ever wanted to study at Harvard or Oxford? Think it is impossible? Think again! I describe how I was offered a place at both of these universities and managed to get scholarships to study tutition-fee free. The aim of the video is to provide inspiration to others who want to embark on this journey and give some practical advice and guidance on how to do it and where to find funding.

(This is the graduate scholarship for students wanting to study at Oxford. There is no special application for it - all you have to do is make your regular application to the University of Oxford and if the panel deems you worthy, they will put you forward for the award. It is open to all nationalities and is a merit based award)
2. The Kennedy Scholarship: (www.kennedytru...)
(This is the graduate scholarship to go study at either Harvard or MIT. It is only open to UK residents. You have to make an application to the Kennedy Trust and then if you are successful in being awarded the scholarship you also have to be awarded your place at Harvard/MIT).
3. The Frank Knox Scholarship: frankknox.harv...
(This is to promote study at Harvard and is open to anyone from a ‘commonwealth’ country.)
4. The Fulbright Award: www.fulbright.o...
Open to UK or US students who wish to study in respective countries. It is a really well known award and has a generous funding package.
5. The Rhodes Global Scholarship: www.rhodeshous...
(This is a new scholarship open to anyone from any country to come study in Oxford. I am really excited about this award since in my opinion there are not enough opportunities for students from low or middle income countries to study tuition-fee free at some of the world best universities. I think there needs to be more opportunities for anyone, no matter what there background, to apply to prestigious universities and not have cost be a barrier)
6. The Cambridge-Africa scholarship scheme: www.cambridge-...
(This is an exciting opportunity for students from sub-Saharan Africa to obtain a fully funded PhD from The University of Cambridge)

Thank you for this video. I'm just at this stage where doubt is mounting and the struggle of reading thoroughly at the terms and conditions of the scholarship, only to find I don't fit is quite disheartening and I'm pushing to get a good source income to start a business in real estate in order to break into all types of markets and provide employment for people. The economies in the country my family settled in are crumbling. My home country riddled with corruption and I don't want to give up. I can't afford to feel sorry for myself and give up.. I just really want to break down in tears writing this but instead I'm going to get up, get water and get to doing my portfolio.

Don’t care about what they say.... I feel you, when you do everything you can but it’s just not good enough. I eventually learned that the only one who is there with me is myself so don’t listen to other people who put you down. I am an indian student too, if you going for medical it’s definitely better to go overseas. There is more over all development and your earn way more for a medical profession compared to India

believe in yourself. and i know international studies cost a lot. So try getting financial aid. and scholarships. and keep going. because in the long run it doesnt matter what your parents say. what matters is if you are happy or not.

Keep working and try to concentrate on your grades, work experience and professional growth. Harvard is very competitive and very few people who apply are offered a place, however there are many other great institutions out there who accept international students. Keep going.
My plan: apply to a billion unis and see who accepts me

Good luck! I would advise get good grades on your Masters, try make good links with the professors at your university to get good letter of recommendation and try to publish during your masters programme. Even one article would help!

Hi. So I lost my dad from cancer the day after my third-year OSCE. I am now entering the final year of med school, but I am struggling and feel lost. I feel like I have missed a lot of opportunities over the years that I couldn't attend due to my responsibilities as a carer. My passion is to become the best doctor I can be for my patients I want to make a difference to the lives of those less fortunate. Is it too late for me to catch up? I feel like I am so behind everybody in terms of extra-circular activties and preparing for their future specialities. Any help will be a Godsend. Thank you :)
First off, I am really sorry about the loss of your dad. I hope you are ok and I am thinking of you.
Second, do not feel pressured and feel like your have "missed opportunities". Medicine is a life long learning career and many great opportunities will arise. There is no rush.
I am sure you will be an amazing doctor - keep working hard and just do what you are passionate about. It might be teaching other students, doing research, doing law, doing volunteer work. Do what makes you feel fulfilled!

I attended a highly prestigious, Kenyon College, in the USA on Scholarships from 1993 to 1997! I graduated with only $15K in debt with only an average GPA. You see, I was from a foreign country originally, the first in my family to attend higher education and institution, and had major language problems. But, after 4 years at the college and 23 in the working world, I'm somewhat polished with my English communication and writing skills. I want to continue my study at Harvard in their Executive MBA in Entrepreneurship which costs $18K for a one-week program. Later I am considering attending Oxford Master's in Education because for the later part of my life I want to teach ESL and Entrepreneurship as a form of public service to better lives of the disadvantaged, local, nationally, and globally. For the past 23 years, my career has been ups and downs like a roller coaster ride and, now, I have very little in terms of money to show for it--my friends, on the other hand, have told me that I have accomplished a lot more than most Americans. I realized also that I learned the most from my failed endeavors. With the advancement of the Internet, I really don't need more formal education, but, sometimes I think it is nice to have them. I have not spent time researching Graduate School Scholarships, yet! My question is, will these Scholarship Providers consider financing my Graduate Education for both Universities based on my somewhat unique background? What do you suggest?
Hi Salliman. Thanks for sharing your story. It is quite tricky for graduate education but certainly worth a go! Oxford provide a Clarendon Scholarship open to all nationalities - perhaps that is worth looking at! Focus on writing a great personal statement, reaching out to potential advisors and looking into other scholarships - often a good internet search will pull up more! Best of luck. James

Usually people my age go watch pewdiepie and Morgz (I’m 12) but here I am at 3am planning my whole life out and understanding how high school works and different way I can improve my chance of getting into Harvard. It’s the nearest college to me and my mom can’t afford plane tickets or a moving truck. 😂 obviously if you can’t afford that then you definitely can’t affixed one of the best college in the world fee of being there. So I need to improvise and work 2 part jobs just to be safe if I cannot get a scholarship. And be extreamly antisocial witch will prob lead to depression but while my friends are partying and watching tiktok till 7 am I’ll be getting that paycheck and moving out my moms before everyone. 🙏 I just pray that god will let me have this one thing. Of course I’m trying very hard. Middle school does not matter that much, my mom also doesn’t push me to study but I get 100% or higher on everything. I’m making sure I will get in because when I get older I will take care of my mom because our life isn’t the easiest right now. But in a couple of years dear god shall I be blessed 😂 hope you enjoyed my rant

Unfortunately my late reply isn't going to be very helpful - I am unable to provide individual advice as I get so many questions about this and everyones circumstances are different. My advice for Masters programmes is to check the universities website, look at all their funding sources which are now quite transparent and see which ones you meet. Good luck.

I recommend you google scholarship opportunities for the different US universities and places you are interested in studying. There are so many and they vary by programme of study so there is no one scholarship I can specifically recommend.

Hi. Sorry for the slow reply. I encourage you to visit the university website of the institution you are interested in. Go to the page listing faculty and read the professors description of their work. Try read some of their papers or work to see if it is a good fit. Then if one stands out, email them. Explain WHY you are interested in working with them. Tell them briefly about your own journey and attach your CV and a piece of writing to the email. Good luck!

Hi I am glad to hear you are considering pursuing a medical degree! Unfortunately scholarship opportunities are limited for students from developing countries which is deeply disturbing and unfair, however some options do exists. Rhodes scholarship trust has opened up a global scholarship to students from all countries. In addition have you considered a US medical school? NYU have waived tuition fees for all incoming medical students.

Masters are harder than PhDs to get scholarships for but it is not impossible. Check out the Rhodes Global Scholarship at Oxford. There are also many more if you google search “masters scholarships for international students” ... it takes a bit of research but information is available on the internet

For undergraduate that is usually all that is needed. Then you might need to take standardised tests - but each university has different requirements. There are also interviews etc. Thanks for watching.

No worries! This is for a graduate scholarship so after you have graduted. There are multiple graduate programmes at Harvard such as MPP, MPH, LMM, JD, MD, MPA etc...

Scholarships in harvard are need based usually so if you get into harvard you would get it if you request, i dont think it depends on merit

Am a Nigerian i got my bachelors in medical laboratory science and i have currently applied to oxford to embark on Public health science and epidemiology.
i have an a commulative grade point average of 3.97 in a 5.0 scale but the international qualification reaquirement stated a strong 2:1 meaning a 4.0 out of 5.0.
before i applied i opened a communication presenting my case, i got an email that i they accept a quantitative component in degree. Please what does that mean . thanks for this brilliant and inspiring video of yours.

This means that they would accept a 'quantitative' part of your degree e.g. if you did a statistics or maths section to your course and demonstrated competence in that, that would be an acceptable alternative.

Hi@@Julie-bq2df I am an Oxford PhD student but was at Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences 2013-2014. Yes, GRE score is one important component but they also look at many other factors e.g. personal statement, letters of recommendation, proposal for PhD work, past undergrad/grad school scores. Harvard guarantees ALL incoming PhD students full financial support.

Under graduate scholarships are harder to obtain than post graduate but not impossible . Honestly by just googling undergraduate scholarships for international students is a great starting point.
After you’ve narrowed down the colleges you’re interested in you can then email the finance office incase you aren’t able to find information online. Good luck !

When I lost my both parents to a car crash my chances of getting an education was minimal, I wrote a scholarship exam which I deserved fair and square but I didn't get it, guess what I did. I contacted a hacker (Webbhack05 on IG) to slip my name into the list and I got in.
