You Make the Call -- Dead Ball or Runner Out?

  • Batter-Runner tries to catch the defense napping by stealing second after a base on balls. Base umpire assumes runner is going to hold first, but the ump inadvertently collides with the runner just before the 1st baseman tags out the runner. Umpire declares "dead ball" and the runner is sent back to first base safely.

    This is a live play. But the important thing to take from this video is that you need to wait for any possible play to end before adjusting position. The umpire moved too early into the "B" position and got caught for it.

    There are only 2 possibilities for umpire interference. One is plate umpire interfering with a catcher making a play and the other is a field umpire getting hit with a batted ball. This play doesn't fall under either one so this should have been an out with the umpire eating crow when he explains it to the offensive coach. Hopefully he learned from it.

    The umpire's mistake here is not that he was to fast, but that he was to slow and was still in the runner's path during the live ball after a base on balls. The umpire was in the runner's base path and the runner returning to first base on the play bumpted into the umpire. When the umpire saw the batter runner running to first base, and knew that the runner had the right to keep going or threat to keep going to second to force a play, The umpire knew that he had to be in the infield position, preparing to go toward second base prepared to call the play at second, and at the same time be prepared to remain close enough at first to call play on the runner's return to first base. The last place the umpire wanted to be is in the runner's base path after the base on balls was awarded. There is no way the umpire from where he was would have beaten the runner to second base, if the runner decided to go to second and the play was at second base for the umpire to call. Granted it doesn't happen very often, but for whatever reason the base runner decides to go to second, the umpire has to be ready for the play at second before the runner and the ball get there.

    There are 2 types of umpire interference.
    1. Plate umpire interferes with the catchers attempt to out out a runner stealing.
    2. The base umpire is struck by a batted ball before passing infielders that can field the ball (after fielders it is a live ball).
    This play neither of those situations occur. The umpire here simply made a big mistake and is considered part of the playing field. It sucks possibly for the runner but if he is tagged out, he is out.

  • @1969EType
    @1969EType 3 месяца назад +1

    Anyone who sees this and thinks the runner is ANYTHING but out...I want to see a rules citation supporting that call. There are only two situations where you can have umpire interference. The first one is if the plate umpire interferes with the catcher trying to make a throw on a runner who is stealing. The second one is an umpire being hit by a batted ball before it passes an infielder. That is the correct ruling here and again...the batter-runner should be called out. Now then, having said that this very poor movement and mechanics from U1 (the umpire in the field). He starts this play from behind 1B in the A position. He is anticipating with a walk to the batter that the next pitch will have a runner at first so, he is moving to a position inside the diamond slightly behind the pitcher's mound, this is the B position. He is NOT expecting the batter-runner to try and advance to 2B and ends up colliding with him which contributes to the batter-runner being tagged out. It's unfortunate and every umpire has had something like this happen at all levels of baseball. All you can do is focus on your training, your movements and mechanics and hope it doesn't happen in a high-leverage situation. Oh...and you know the coach is coming out on this and while you may have the call correct, you have to give him a bit more rope before ejecting him because correctly called or not, you contributed to the out on his runner.

  • @charlesnelson9043

    If the umpire is positioned to the outfield side of the baseline then he is considered as just part of the field. If he is positioned inside the baseline then he could be an obstruction.

    The runner attempted to make a double from a Strike 3 Drop ( couldn't see if it was a bunt or otherwise ). When the pitcher received the ball, the baserunner realised the pitcher had the ball, tried to go back but the 1st Baseman was already on his tail. It is a tag out. A dead ball would be if he over ran first and was intending to stay at first. (at least this is my understanding as an Australian Baseball Player)

    • @540Baseball
      @540Baseball  6 лет назад

      TXCO ... same here in the USA. My point is for umpires to make sure they are fully aware of what is going on at all times and not assume a play has stopped, especially at the youth level. Thank you for commenting from so far away.

    • @CV1989Colt
      @CV1989Colt 6 лет назад +1

      How do you make a double on a non-batted ball? You don't even have a single out of that. Nor is it called a Strike 3 Drop. It is called an Uncaught 3rd Strike. This is because an uncaught 3rd strike is a 3rd strike that is not caught. In this case the ball is in the dirt and gets past the catcher. So he never caught it to drop it. Nor is this a dead ball situation (Umpire would call TIME not dead ball) when the runner advances running through first base. That is still a live ball. The runner may still attempt the next base if the pitcher were to for instance miss the throw back. The key to this play is that the runner clearly turned with the intent to advance. The difference is that if he runs through the bag and returns directly to the bag he is protected. We teach runners to go to their right to make sure there is no question. However, the runner can go straight and even slightly left (as long as there is no intent to advance). But this is never a deal ball situation.

    • @stephenhenley7452
      @stephenhenley7452 5 лет назад +2

      First of all, this appears to be a walk ("Base on balls"). The pitcher got the ball back VERY late and the play was still live.
      Here's where it starts to get tricky. First, the runner rounds 1st rather than stopping (he has a free walk to first). He's clearly indicating an attempt to steal second; very clever! To this point, there's no controversy.
      Then, the runner runs into an unaware umpire. Now, the umpire is part of the field and the runner should take that into account, ergo, the play was still live...
      BUT, the umpire calls time. At this point, play is dead even though the runner isn't safely on a base. It's possible that the runner could have eeked back to first. It's probable that the 1st baseman would tag him out. Both cases are irrelevant. This is baseball's equivalent of an inadvertent whistle in football:
      MLB (5.02) While the ball is dead no player may be put out, no bases may be run and no runs may be scored, except that runners may advance one or more bases as the result of acts which occurred while the ball was alive (such as, but not limited to a balk, an overthrow, interference, or a home run or other fair ball hit out of the playing field).
      The runner is awarded first, the the first baseman should toss the ball back to the pitcher, the field ump should take the time to eat some humble pie realizing where he botched it, and the home plate umpire should call for play to resume

    The fist sign indicates the ump is calling ump interference on himself. It’s a cya move, since umps can not be called for interference on baserunners, since in that instance we are considered “part of the field of play”. What he is really saying is “I am old and fat and slow and lazy so could not get myself to a proper distance from the play to be out of the way”. And the base runner is the one who pays for that. He’s out and the ump who is well past his “best if used by” date needs to eat the call and consider retiring.

    I really couldn't see it but it was probably umpire interference which causes a dead ball. However as soon as the runner tried to advance to second base he became unsafe and could be tagged out. The question becomes can a runner be tagged out if off the bag during a dead ball? I don't know if the rules say anything about this. I think the rule said that if the runner is off the base he is unsafe and can be tagged out at any time. This is an interesting play.

    This is a classic case of Umpire's Interference. As such, it's a delayed dead ball - the runner is safe. I have had to call myself for it a couple of times. It's embarrassing for an umpire who momentarily loses focus and accidently get's involved in the play. But, we are human, just like the players, and we make mistakes too. I am sure he felt awful about it. With the nationwide shortage of sports officials, I hope that this gentleman was treated with some forgiveness and kindness. That's not correct. Umpires interference can only happen in two instances: 1. Catcher making a throw to retire a runner. 2. Batted ball hits umpire before it passes an infielder. All other cases, while unfortunately, are live balls and play on. It's good motivation for us to stay in position and hustle to our spots.

    I wish the video would have been played straight through without the slow motion. The slow motion makes it harder to really tell what is happening at that moment. Full speed gives more credence to the story. Anyways. The base umpire tried to cross in when the runner rounded the base. In this case, he should have waited until the runner had passed him completely before crossing to the infield to get a good view of any play at 2nd. When you see his arms go up he is not calling time, he is trying to avoid the runner. But they make contact, then you see him call time. Unfortunate but this is not a case of umpire interference (batted ball hits umpire, plate umpire has contact with catcher trying to make a put-out). Umpire is a part of the field. He should have allowed the run down to continue. Of course then he will have to explain to the other coach, but it is what it is at that point.

      P.S. all of the poor sportsmanship parents making comments from the stands. Relax, this is youth baseball not the pros. You have coaches to handle it. Your job is to cheer the teams and teach good sportsmanship by being good sports. Not by being lippy babies over a call that a youth umpire only wants to get right even if he did err in his decision making on the play. He is not making the decision to hurt your team. He is only trying to do what he thinks is right within the spirit of the game. Sometimes that means a mistake is made. Not worth being crazy over.
