Bugoy's musicality is amazing! He's a musical genius! Every run/riff, every adlibs and changes he does perfectly fit songs he sings, impromptu or not.
He should keep singing and hopefully, write songs.
At the same time, it's so sad that both of them are soooo underrated.
Damn! I read the comments and I still can’t believe this was an impromptu performance. I guess when you’re a phenomenal singer like these Filipinos are, it’s easy as pie.
This was what happened to the Miss Saigon musical. They held an audition in New York and most of the peope they liked were Filipinos. So the producers went to the Philippines and held an audition there. They finally chose Leah Salonga who of course eventially won the Tony’s and went on to sing the Disney Mulan song and the Jasmine part in Alladin.
ovela hit the nail right on its head. filipinos, at a very age, are exposed to different kinds of music. and yes karaoke is very instrumental to that. however, i think it's cultural. even during the early times, in almost anything music was part of our lives - from harvest to courting a girl. there's this thing called "harana" where the guy sings a love song and waits for the girl to open her window and hopefully let him come inside the house.
I agree with you! Except that I think Filipinos have been exposed to and are lovers of music and singing everywhere way before Karaoke (it just enhanced it, though). When I was growing up there, I found Filipinos to have always been making an excuse to sing and dance - from parties and programs in class or schools, from family parties to local fiestas. There's always a music program anywhere and everywhere. Then the minus one started just so people could start to sing and it'll be complete even without somebody who knows how to play an instrument. I went to Best Buy with my dad those times, and asked about a minus one machine and tapes. The sales people and customer rep. there just scratched their heads - they didn't even know what it was. Then little by little (growing up here in America and living in other countries from a military family), I noticed that it is not actually normal in other countries to have lots of programs in class and schools where kids just sing and dance. Sure they'd have some programs here and there but not to the degree that it is normal and everywhere in the Philippines. You'd have to be at a performing arts school for that to happen here. So yup, in my opinion, I don't think Karaoke alone was instrumental, because I agree it is in the Filipino culture already! After all, there was "Ang Bagong Kampeon" way before there was even "American Idol."

Singing in public is a common thing in the Philippines, it's a plus if you have the talent or you stay in tune, if you don't it is still okay, but mostly of your friends will tease you or jokingly ask you to let your hidden talent stay hidden.
Katrina is a regular on the Music Hall every wednesday. I just saw her there on my birthday and I'm so happy. She's really awesome. Bugoy settled? Wow its the first time I heard lol.
Bugoy is a soul singer po. He just sing reggae one time and that is one day. Find more video of him po. Especially " Angels brought me here" po. That's his masterpiece. He won at the talent contest in the Philippines po and he audition angels brought me here.

Choro Ter that would be great if they could make it for Katrina’s first big concert. I’m sure BuDaKhel will be there performing/supporting her too. Yeah what you're stating is true, it is an understatement to say that there are plenty of talents in the philippines be it singing, dancing, acting and playing musical instruments . Filipino musicians are practically present in all of southeast Asias 5 star hotels and lounges including cruise ships.
When the famous musical of McIntosh, Miss Saigon back in the 80s were auditioning for the cast of the musical then, they went to several countries in Europe, Asia, the Americas, and it was surprising to the team that there were some who audition for the female lead part out side of the Philippines to be Filipinas that would pass for the rule, they were intrigue so they finally decided to come to the Philippines, then it was history, they were amazed as to the long queue of talents the very first day and last day they opened and closed it . The musical director, the songwriter and McIntosh the producer himself had something to say about the limitless talents they have experienced leading to hiring mostly Filipinos casts in the chorus lines and other support group this was the original cast of the first staging of Miss Saigon in Dury Lane London headed by. Our very own Ms Lea Salonga together with Ms Monique Wilson also a Filipina, as Leas alternate and 4 or 5 more Filipino singers in the major cast. More Filipino singers were recruited in the succeeding staging outside of Dury Lane in any part of the world .
You know what's ironic, I feel like OPM (Only Pinoy Music, I hope I'm right) is dying until this recent online craze. I think wishbus contributed a lot to it.

I watched that entire documentary! It is fascinating! Lea was such a young girl and so humble, not even realizing how extremely talented she was. I remember her taking a Newspaper she had with a Les Miserable review over to the director to sign before the biggest audition of her life , like a little fan,! Just soo endearing! 😍

Bugoy, was discovered in a reality contest on TV called Pinoy Dream Academy unfortunately he didn't win there and ended up runner up, Yeng Constantino is also a product of that show in its 1st season, she won there. This is an annual event held in the Los Angeles area in California. Jed Madela won in 2005.

M-Angel was partly correct when she said Filipinos will not pro create with people who cannot sing. A long time ago a part of our courtship involves singing to the girl. A group of guys will do the "Harana" outside of the girl's house. Usually the guy who likes the girl will be the soloist. And the others will be bringing the guitar or ukelele.
