    Hey guys, we get a lot of questions on how to steering wheel control modules aka SWC. In this video we talk about how to hardwire the module to your aftermarket radio as well as what all of the wires mean.
    Any questions? Drop them down below.
    We will also do a video on how to hardwire a programable module in the future!

    great video brother , thank you for the info do you think would this work with say a Dodge charger\challenger and a higher-end Pioneer nex unit?
    I've got a nice frankenstien job going (dont ask too many questions lol)
    also ,could the part that's supposed to got to a charger steering wheel be replaced by one that goes to say an older Mitsubishi?
    (I told you dont ask too many questions haha) thank you for your time to anyone that would mind giving feedback im appreciating the learning curve here,but mainly the OP

    Great video, I'm about to do this on my 2011 Hilux. Is there any specs I need to look for on aftermarket head unit to make sure it will work with steering wheel controls? Looking at just a basic 1 din Kenwood etc.

    What did you wire the other side of the patch lead to????

    • @TheFittingBay
      @TheFittingBay  5 лет назад

      bazrippa hey mate. patch lead plugs directly into the module.
      For most head units the other end 3.5mm jack plugs into the unit itself (SWC/REM) plug.
      On Kenwood either a wire labeled Key 1 or the blue with yellow stripe wire. It’s different depending on the patch lead.
      That wire goes to the blu/yellow SWC wire from the Kenwood unit

    Such a good video! Do you have any idea how to wire swc in a jvc head unit (kw-m150bt)? I've got the right aerpro unit for my car (2010 mazda 6), got the jvc patch lead, but can't get it going. I first tried connecting to the steering remote control wire (blue/yellow) but no go. So then I tried connecting to: st remote input 1 (green/red), st remote input 2 (purple red), and st remote grnd (grey/red). Still no luck, I dunno what I'm doing wrong! Would love some advice! Thanks 😊

    Why don’t your radios come with ISO connections already ? Not seen one with out it since the late 90’s in uk. Even the most of eBay china units come with iso

    • @TheFittingBay
      @TheFittingBay  4 года назад

      energylevels1 you need step 2 for it to be 100% plug and play.
      This is a DIY for people that ONLY have the car side of the plug.
      they make two seperate plugs with a universal (ISO) plug on the ends of each different plug. This is because not every radio uses the same plug and not every car has the same plug / wiring pin out.
      So if you’ve got two seperate harnesses, yes it’s plug and play if not, you’re missing one

    So if we ground the parking brake wire (mine is orange from the HU) to the black wire on my aftermarket harness, will I not be able to use the parking brake anymore? I have an electronic parking brake system.

    • @TheFittingBay
      @TheFittingBay  3 года назад

      Is The orange park brake wire coming from the steering wheel control module / harness? If so this does not get grounded. This is the signal to connect the park brake wire coming from the new unit. What you want to do is ground the park brake wire on the new head unit side

    • @T.hatsAri
      @T.hatsAri 3 года назад +1

      @@TheFittingBay Yeah the orang wire is coming from the New HU. And the black one is coming from the aftermarket harness.

  • @traviss6564

    Why did you skip illumination if the wire was right there? I don't know about AUS (I'm just guessing based on your accent), but in the US, Kenwood HU's do dim appropriately when the headlights are on at night. I get not going out of the way to find it...but capping off both orange wires takes just as much effort as connecting and soldering/taping the orange together. Just an observation...well done otherwise.

    • @TheFittingBay
      @TheFittingBay  4 года назад +2

      Travis S completely agree. However when it is connected you cannot turn the function off, in most units. So whether you want it on or not it will be on. Most new double dins have automatic dimming (gps/time based) so it’s not like you’re left without dimming 😊

    hi I wonder if you may guide me what exactly I need. Ill buy an boss car radio it has SWC as a 3.5 female jack. My car hasnt from factory with SWC controls, so I want to buy SWC remote control, it comes one or tw remotes and a receiver,this receivers has 5 pin cable positive,negative,antena, key 1 and key 2. My question is? It will be mandatory to buy this kind of traductor device? or is posible to make my own plug 3.5 stereo male conector and solder key 1 as a L signal and key 2 as R signal in the 3.5 stereo plug?

    • @TheFittingBay
      @TheFittingBay  4 года назад

      Ivan Chang hi mate! Little confused on the last part there. So the car does not have steering wheel controls. 1) you do not need them. 2) if you want them you can purchase the external remotes and they have a 5pin plug at the receiver. What you need to do is connect the 5PIN to the 3.5 bare wires that come with the radio (SWC 1/2). If the unit does not have the plug yes you can use your own 3.5 it needs to have SHEILD / GND / red / white which will be SWC 1/2

      @@stickboyfpv4742 One thing I’m thinking is it might have a factory amp, a factory high level amp and you might need some small resistors on the speaker cables. This happens with VW and Mazda’s with factory amps. The input voltage from the HU is a bit high so the resistors will bring it down a touch. Just confirm first that it’s factory amp like Bose or something :)
