    I learned a lot from this as I am wanting to dye my super heavy cotton robe. I also learned tons from the comments! Thank you!!!

    It was a fluke that I found your channel, as I'm not a DIYer, and I loved it. You're quite a character and I love your personality. I subscribed to your channel so that I don't miss another one of your stories. Keep it up!!!

    The Rit website says not to dye over bleached fabric, because bleach actually damages the fibers and makes them not hold due well, so that may have been a contributer to the splotches and not getting the color you desired! Rit sells a product that you can use first to make your clothes white before dying :)

    I've Dyed several drop cloths. For drapes and furniture upholstery. I always use the powder for cotton. Its more concentrated (I think). I always use more than they say to use. in your case 4 or 5. And here's the kicker. I use Rock salt, A broom handle or a toilet plunger, If you cant set your hot water heater up in temp boil lkots of pots of water on the stove while your fabric washes. add the water from the stove to the hot water in the bathtub (run that last so it doesnt cool off. mix the dye/salt well with the handle (plunger?) add the fabric and keep moving it and punching it down for about 10 minutes. Take a nap. Repeat every half hour. I leave mine 2 hours. drain the tub and wash with vinegar. It's never perfect. But it's damn close

    Oh bless your heart! I’ve never tried to dye in a washer...if the fabric seems too bright (in the non-splotchy places) perhaps bleach again and then get yourself a big tub (metal or Rubbermaid) and RIT again? After you calm down a little?

    +The DIY Cottage,just dye it again in a tub or kiddy pool with hot,hot,hot water,and about a cup of salt,let it sit in dye for 2 hours,rinse in bathtub in cold water until clear

    I wanted to do canvas curtains too but it didnt work out lol. BUT I decided to do Duck fabric curtains. They are in color natural and i like the look of it and they are SUPER easy to put up. I just used the ring hooks on a yard of duck fabric and left the ends as they were cut cause they were nice and straight. I love the way they look and they let in light without letting people see in lol. I plan on doing a how to video in the future of them

    I was just going to say I think you had too much fabric in the washer, then you said it at the end lol. So frustrating when projects don't work out!

    I had a washing machine like that too. It soon stopped working all together. This was very frustrating!!! Perhaps this is what happened for you. In any case, I admire your courage for taking on the project. ☺️ Go boldly forward, and continue to face all with confidence😀

    What your showing is not a fail. It will show a creme color. Use more dye and more time. As long as you haven't used a color fix you can still proceed and dye the material.

    Your washing machine is like mine, this is the safety feature. You should had used only one drop cloth at a time by "PAUSING" the cycle to soak. This is the only way we learn from our mistakes. Thanks for sharing and God bless.

    😳 getting ready to dye some curtains , not much fabric but I too have anxiety ... I was thinking if you ever try it again, maybe don't try to dye bleached fabric ? Seems like you did everything right 🤗

    • @Jessa8891
      @Jessa8891 5 лет назад

      I dye bleached cheesecloth and had no problems. Although you are supposed to prewash and dry the material before dyeing. I didn’t do that either. Just better to put less dye in than recommended and build the color if needed.

  • @crazylikeme08able

    It really didn't look that bad, it had that distressed look... I liked it!

  • @lauriewiggers5321
    @lauriewiggers5321 4 года назад

    I haven't seen anyone mention this in the comments (although maybe I have just missed it), but if you had previously bleached the fabric with chlorine bleach, that may have been part of the problem. Chlorine bleach can damage the fabric in a way that will make it take dye unevenly. RIT advises against using chlorine bleach on a fabric you are planning to dye.

  • @qveenissac
    @qveenissac 6 лет назад

    The splotching comes from the washer being over crowded. This can even happen sometimes when bleaching fabric but every agent may work differently. Next time try just 1 half panel at a time in the washer!
    Edit: you can do another go around with the dye, after all there is a saturation point where any and all parts of your fabric are going to reach a max color payoff thus you should end up with an even dye!

    The washing machines are now digital, and have a mind of their own...called a chip that is programmed at the factory. When the PAUSE is on, or the top is up when a cycle has been started, after 15 min they go to EMPTY the machine no matter what u do. Un-plugging also takes it to EMPTY when plugged back in. Yes, I found out the hard way also....then I read the stupid instructions!! I will take the old machines with the actual dials that click click as you turn them without any lights or glowing numbers. So sorry yours didn't work out, but that is VERY heavy fabric to dye and being wet on top of it would take a real toll on the machine unless you did one at a time maybe. Buy king size sheets in the color you want....its much easier.

    I've watched this video 4 times.. 4 TIMES!! I love this one. I took your fails and I'm going to go try it. I got my drop cloths... drove to harbor freight just to do this... and now.... to go fail myself. (Btw my washing machine does the same thing!!)

  • @joywalsh6150
    @joywalsh6150 6 лет назад +2

    That doesnt look too bad, why not get some stencils and fabric paint and use that as a background and use that to distract from the splotchiness? Or you could make it into faux marble with some brown and gold and black fabric paint?

    • @TheDIYCottage

    You need a vastly larger pot to do the item. The larger your item the larger the pot you need! Also if you use a washer you will ruin your washer. The rit dye can clog elements in your washing machine!

    Your failure has probably helped a lot of people like me. I'm getting ready to die some drop cloths from harbor Freight and I will be sure not to overload the machine. I never planned on bleaching the fabric first and that is confirmed in the comments. I would think that most machines you can just turn off rather than unplug. I would have turned mine off and then restart from the beginning.

  • @marywest2896
    @marywest2896 6 лет назад +1

    maybe if you had used your tub instead. the fabric would have more room to lay in the dye instead of being bundled up in the washer. then when you were ready to take it out just lightly squeeze the liquid out and put into one of those big buckets you can buy at home depot to transfer to the washer, put on spin cycle then wash. That's how I dye large heavy fabric anyway.

  • @linbron2018

    Has anyone done this in a tub of hot water? Since it’s so much fabric 1 panel at a time.
    U are brave to do in washing machine. In the pass I go to laundrymat after hours of course. The. Do my thing.

    Hi ! I just watched your rae dunn inspired chair cushions and I was wondering have you had to wash them ? How did they hold up ? Trying to re - do a bench seat cushion and want to make sure it won't rub - off on someone's butt LOL smh. Thanks so much !

    Awww! So sorry the dye job failed! We really don't enjoy your fails in that way...we enjoy your humorous explanations about them...but not that they didn't work out. 😔 Wish there was some way to salvage the curtains, other than more bleach and dye.
