So, can you tow with a Mazda 3? Yes. Even though the owners manual of the US version of the car says you "can't" due to Mazda not wanting to be sued, the car is more than capable of trailering up to 1322lbs (600kg) without any additional brakes on the trailer. That's more than enough to trailer my MT07 around. In this towing setup with the Mazda 3 the total weight of my cargo (trailer + bike + weight of all cargo including the hitch weight + myself) was about 1050lbs +/- 40lbs.
The tongue weight, which I forgot to mention in the video, was about 120lbs on the ball. The Mazda 3 manual recommends not exceeding 165lbs tongue weight on the ball; even through a Class-I hitch is rated for 200lbs tongue weight, always go with the lower number as the limit. I measured my tongue weight by putting a wooden block on a bathroom scale and putting the tip of the trailer ball receiver on the block (with the bike loaded). Ideally you want the tongue weight to be between 10-15% of the total loaded trailer weight. In this case 400lbs bike + 400lbs trailer = 800lbs. So 10-15% of that is between 80-120 lbs. Getting a correct tongue weight is important so you have good handling, along with making sure that most of the weight is above/in-front of the trailers axle. Good luck, and ask any questions about the Mazda 3 towing setup in the comments, I'll do my best to answer.
The cost: $1000 trailer + $ 270 title/registration/notary fees + $50 spare wheel + $100 wheel chock + $33 straps + $180 hitch + $180 hitch/lights install + ball mount + $36 ball mount + $43 lights kit = ~$1892 + tax

j/k - That's some hero level details, kudos and thanks from the wide web's world, I for one appreciate the attention to detail that far too many youtube channels don't bother with anymore. Good on ya!
You missed one important step - flick the straps and say 'That's not going anywhere!'

Towing a Mazda with Spicey Boi would be way cooler.
you're right, it would haha
Lol.. if almost say 80% of the pickup trucks rarely do pickup truck things... that lil Mazda is a beast !!
My sister towed a loaded U-Haul trailer from York PA to California with her 5 speed manual ford focus! I had no doubts the "little Mazda" would be just fine with this trip.
Nothing but respect for this project and to just do it.
"Don't you have a pickup, Baby Girl?" 😊 I don't know if you remember a similar quote from a thumbnail you did, but I do. I think of you as that baby girl, or maybe Dr Baby Girl. Don't mean to stereotype you, but I would guess 80 percent of drivers can't back a trailer. Just put you hands at 5 and 7 o'clock on your steering wheel. To make the trailer go left turn your hands left or right to make the trailer go right. How much you turn depends on the length of your car and trailer. Practice. Best wishes, Barry
Big fan of towing with whatever one has to drive already. Nice research you did too.
You can twist the safety chains to safely make them shorter. Plenty of RUclips content that covers that.
You're basically a pro truck driver now. Dr. Trucker Lali. Awesome.
Almost 😂
WELCOME to Florida Lali! 😎
It's been obvious how much more relaxed you've been since becoming PHD Lali 😊
Thank you!! 😊
Had to do this with a Chevrolet Cruze and a U-Haul trailer about 6 years ago, had my Yamaha 535, a bed and all my house stuff from Wyoming to Washington
Couple of trailer tips. Good idea to have a spare tire, a means of jacking up the trailer, and a wrench that fits the trailer’s lugs. Most car wrench’s won’t. Be certain your tires are up to pressure, trailer tires are run at higher pressure than cars. Grease your bearings at least once a year. Nothing ruins a trip faster than having to find a trailer tire while your bike and trailer sit on the interstate.
Kudos on crossing the chain!!
Haha YES! Was anticipating this one. For sure the "little" Mazda that could! 💯I managed to find myself a 2006 Mazda 3 as a replacement for my previous car after looking around for quite some time. Absolutely love it so far! Drives smooth, so fun too!
I do have the 1.6 liter engine which is real common in Europe as you may know and I am allowed to tow with too. Just less mass compared to yours or any other 2 liter engine variant.
On top of my head 550 kg's. And with a more solid construction mentioned on the specs it says braked 900 kg's.
Will definitely look into upgrading over a few years or so the the model you have as well. 😄
Excellent set up 100% legit!! Trailer was level, bike was perfectly strap, weight distribution was perfect, towing maximum weight under!! Great job 👏
Yeah, it’s very exciting to Trailer especially your bike to Florida. Done it for years. OK you can never put on too many straps for his good Six is awesome
Glad you gave it a shot. I've towed things I don't know how many times with my cars when I don't feel like grabbing the truck or don't need it. It's especially nice on longer trips to get 25 or 30mpg instead of 15. I've towed with all of these and had no issues ever, Pontiac Firebird Formula, Ford Contour, Buick Regal, Chevy Cruze. Just took the Cruze 6hrs to CT to pick up a Ducati Multistrada 1260s. 1.4l turbo and 6 speed manual Cruze tote out there and back no problems. 70-80mph the whole way
When I was in high school (back in the stone age) my father used to tow his small sailboat with an ancient Dodge Colt with no issues. Most small cars can manage light towing duties without any problems. I've even moved myself seven hours away using my small light pickup towing a U-Haul 5X8 covered trailer and a full truck bed. Not everyone needs a full size pickup or SUV for towing.
Nice work. That Mazda is a fine tow vehicle. Key thing as you already noted is just watching your total gross towing weight with trailer included. Also keep the trailer with a weight bias toward the front. Don't put heavy weight at the rear of the trailer or it will have the momentum to start "wagging" that Mazda around.
Couple pointers:
1) bolt that chock down. I have same one. Way more stable if you bolt it to the trailer. Can use large 3/8 or 1/2 in diameter lag bolts to attach it to the floor of that trailer.
2) Remember you're preventing the bike from rolling fore/aft and side to side. The trailer prevents the chock and bike from rolling forward. Need to prevent it from rolling back so run a ratchet strap around wheel or forks to the trailer cross bar. Run another strap through rear wheel to the back of the trailer. For side to side, those straps you have on the forks are good. Or to the frame at the side of the engine.
3) DON'T use the passenger pegs. They're made to hold a passenger's weight. They're often cast aluminum and if you crank them too hard, they are brittle and can (will) break if exposed to too much force.
4) as you tie down are preparing for the unexpected... when you have to slam on the brakes, or take evasive action. This is why we use straps with "working" ratings that are like 1/10th of their break strength.
4) shorten those chains. If needed, wrap them around trailer before attaching to car. Going over top of hitch has potential for trouble if the ball falls off or that draw bar comes off.
5) trailer tire in car is fine. There are nice mounts that put it on the trailer tongue....once you do it, you'll never go back to spare in the car. So convenient.
5) speed... primarily governed by 2 things. Most important is trailer tire rating. Second is how fast the car can comfortable tow without needing to constantly downshift to lower gear. OK for steep hills, but if transmission is constantly going between 2 gears even on flat highway or just mild hills, then slow down.
6) recommend get one of those inexpensive TPMS sensors made for cars but use for trailer tires. So nice to know if trailer tires are properly inflated (most common cause of failure), and an alert if trailer tire suddenly loses pressure. They also give temp which can give you awareness if trailer hub bearing is about to fail. An early warning of something going wrong with a trailer wheel is critical to prevent an inconvenient situation (flat tire) from growing into a really bad situation (damage or loss of control) or tragedy.
Nice work!
I live in Denmark and towed several motorcycles on trailers on my Suzuki Swift. It works just fine :) I even bought the car with the hitch installed because I like to drive stuff around 🤣
What a nice looking trailer. I would be totally confident in the Mazda towing a little trailer like that. There is very little wind resistance, so once you have got up to cruising speed it doesn't take much effort for the car to pull it. It would have to work a bit hard for an uphill start, but I don't expect you will do that too often. I have towed caravans (recreational trailer for camping) many thousands of miles with small low powered cars. I would love that trailer. When I take my track bike to a race circuit I have to hire a trailer. Best wishes from Spain.
I figured you got the same looks Ive gotten towing an 800lb atv and 1500lb sxs on a 16ft trailer with a Jeep Liberty 😂😂 not my brightest idea but have gotten great memories out of it. (I bought a truck now for future/further adventures once the toys keep getting upgraded)
Would never expect you to just wing it, well planned an executed. I've witnessed small cars like the 3 tow jet ski's all over the place so I'd think this is very similar. 👏
So glad you had a safe journey. Have a good time in Florida.
Get hitchlock, to secure the trailer and a spare wheel.
You can bolt it underneath either the drawbar or underneath the trailer bed.
It shouldn't have securing chain around hitch, best to have a separate pigtail
I thought about it but then I also thought...the trunk works perfectly well haha
What surprises me is how few people I see, who tow motorcycles, don’t use the Canyon Dancer Bar Harness.
I purchased one in 2000. I still have it, it’s in fantastic shape.
I’ve used it on a Honda CBR 600 F3, a Honda 919, a Honda VTX 1800 and a Honda Valkyrie 2nd gen.
It’s very versatile and you don’t have to tie your bike down via the fork tubes.
It fits over ur hand grips.
I need one of those
So good to hear you traveled all that way with the bike in tow.
With all the time on the bike, you are well aware that you can use the transmission to help with stopping or pulling a hill (if needed). This note is for others that may, could use the info. ( YES EVEN AN AUTO TRANSMISSION)
Can’t wait to see my little fiesta with a trailer and the xsr on it 😂. Great video Lali 👏🏻
Looks like a Nice Trailer. It's a shame if it has bias ply tires. Radial tires ride a lot smoother with less bouncing and less rolling resistance for better mpg. I hope it has spring or Torsion bar suspension.
I paid $75.00 for a 3 place Motorycle Trailer at my neighbors garage sale. I saved a pair or radial tires from my Chevy Chevette before I took it to the scrap yard when it rusted out. It still ran fine.
Good job! Nice to have the car in all that rain, eh?
The lil Mazda that could!! Glad all went well. ❤
Hi Dr. Lali how are you doing? Next video we want to see you reversing the trailer into parking bays?😂😂you could have bought a really good comfort seat for Spicy Boi at a fraction of the cost and rode it there, plenty of change for hotel breaks, a sauna and a massage or two where you need it most🤣🤣
Well done Lali, Mazda, new trailer n Spicy Boi.👏👍
That's a decent trip for sure. Better to have 1 or 2 more straps tieing anything down than not enough and find out the hard way.
Used to use a Pontiac Grand Prix to haul my SeaDoo. Hauled it perfectly.
glad you have had a safe trip to Florida and I hope you have a safe one back to PA.
Pretty sure I have that same exact 5x8 utility trailer. Glad to see the setup make it 1000 miles so far. Maybe it's the part of me that wants to over-engineer everything, but I just don't trust those welded on D-rings in the corners. I went to Mcmaster-Carr and bought some way overkill bolt in D-rings that I attached to the wood planks.
Also, trailers are the perfect place to use up some of those stickers you get from manufacturers when you buy their gear!
Ah that's a good idea with the stickers haha
Well done you nailed it.
Good Stuff
You should strap to the steel frame in the rear, not the white metal foot peg drops (white metal as in aluminum alloy, not color or race😂) - reason being, white metal like that breaks, doesn't usually bend. IF, and admittedly, it's a big IF, something goes wrong, the frame is stronger and won't damage; those peg dropdowns could easily snap under terrible bounces. they're strong enough to hold up a person, not necessarily hold down a bike.
A nice video, great info! Spicey Boi, is a very lucky boy to be so pampered!
Awesome, thanks for this. It gives me some confidence that I could tow a trailer this size behind our VW Jetta. Already have a class 1 hitch like yours on it, and my little Honda Trail 125 is a lot lighter than your bike.
Glad I could help!
Freddie dobbs would tow his t100 bonnevile with his little fist 500 no problem! Love your Mazda! I had 3 MX-5s great cars
Twist each of the safety chains until they tighten and shorten up a bit, then hook/attach to receiver hitch. Drive safe, give yourself a little extra stopping distance 🤘
Well done Lali👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Spicy boi looking super spicy on his ne trailer 🌶️🏍️😉
Funny to hear, that this is uncommon practice in the US, as it is common practice here in Europe (as Lali will know) we even tow 2 of such bikes on a trailer and a fiat Panda in front of it… 700 kg is a common weight limit here un braked…. Pick-up trucks are the exception here😂
Well done though, for us here it is quite a distance to drive all alone
Euro drivers is where I got the inspiration from! I was surprised to see the US manual say no towing allowed. Then I saw an old review from the UK (ruclips.net/video/b5VxeH-d7uM/видео.html) where they were trailering a mini mobile home with a Mazda 3, and that sealed the deal for me
@@AntiParallali ah yes, towing mobile homes, behind this class of cars are very common practice here in Europe.. although those mobile homes come with a “break” and It is worth mentioning though… most of “our” versions are manuals…
As said, i am quite sure as long as you don’t exceed the legal weight limit, even 2 lighter bikes is no problem either..
Now waiting ……. to see why you traveled to california 😉. keep up the good work!
Not to worry it's fine, in Europe you see small cars tow everything. It's just you guys love your trucks, but you made your Romanian origins proud there 😂
Europe was definitely the inspiration for this 😂
Towed a 74 Honda 300 motorcycle with my 2010 Scion xb using that 4x6 from u haul. Mines has coilovers so it was a little harsher and I can feel the trailer kinda banging around 😂 but other then terrible gas mileage she did good for the 3 hour trip.
I'm in Europe. Half the hatchbacks (German: Kombi) have trailer hitches. You do have to get a license for a trailer to tow behind ANY vehicle, which isn't easy or cheap, but still a lot of people do.
In Poland we can tow trailers with standard car license if the car and trailer weight less than 3500 kg. Lot of "normal cars" have hitches, and lot of people use it. One of my friend drive old Nissan Primera with his Nissan Sunny racecar on trailer, and it's perfectly legal with lightweight trailer xD
Reading the title could think someone was riding the bike on the rope behind the car )
Really, towing the trailer is not a problem, the only question is automatic transmission. But if you can tow another car on a rope - you can tow a trailer for sure. And one 200kg bike is a quite small load - in my places people load like 1 ton of cement etc.
you got a car wow.
Yay Edgar!!
I told you that there would be no problems. As I said the last time,no one would give you a strate answer because no one wanted to take any liability because everyone thinks they will be sued. But I have seen smaller vehicles tow bigger loads. I up until a year ago was a master certified auto technician for 45 years, just so you know that I know what I am talking about. So stop worrying and just enjoy yourself and travels. 😊Peace ✌️
When the preroll ad played before the video is made by the same RUclipsr that made the main video. LOL
LMAO I love that, was it Flying Eyes? That's the only one I think I'm in
@AntiParallali Yea, the flying eyes one. I have been seeing your face a lot on the right side of my Facebook page too. You have became the face of flying eyes.
Not sure it the Mazda has an overdrive cut off switch or button but even with that light load turn it off up hill that’s a vary small clutch in the torque converter.
You made that trip all by yourself? Cool 😎 you did great now you have an adventure bike. 😉😂🤣
No cut off switch, but the car didn't sound like it was struggling at all. I think uphill on a long gradual slope, I saw the RPMs around 3000
Honestly 🔥 😂
I'm going to do the same thing but use the bulldog system going through the rear axle
What's a bulldog system? A type of sturdier axle or something along those lines?
@@AntiParallali pittbull system i guess?
You can twist the chains to artificially reduce the length. Save your bungie cords.

No bike meet unfortunately, just here for some vacation and sunshine!
@@AntiParallali well that's good I hope you have a very wonderful vacation you definitely deserve it all right now stay safe ✌️
This is standard anywhere else in the world. IDK how much you paid for the trailer, but I am surprised you didn't get a motorcycle specific one to save more weight. I appreciate this video and it give me some ideas. Thank you!!!
Edit: can you speak to the cost for what it took to install everything?
Companies that sell "motorcycle specific" trailers like to overcharge the hell out of it. The end up costing a hell of a lot more than what she paid for the general tractor supply trailer.
Good point, the motorcycle specific ones were really expensive and only about 25 lbs lighter. Initially I wanted to do that but now my dad can also use the trailer for some of his yard projects. The cost: $1000 trailer + $ 270 title/registration/notary fees + $50 spare wheel + $100 wheel chock + $33 straps + $180 hitch + $180 hitch/lights install + ball mount + $36 ball mount + $43 lights kit = $1892 + tax
Yeah they start at like $2000+ brand new....☹️
@@AntiParallali Thank you for this! I have always wanted to tow with my Mazda 3. And this give me a confidence and the financial overview to start looking into trailers and hitches.

Have you ever tried renting a uhaul motorcycle trailer to tow with the Mazda and have they given you any issues about it? Its about $15 a day and they dont charge milage but last time I rented one I went to pick it up with a truck so idk if they were ok with that and not a "tow rated" car.
I could totally see you with truck nuts or some other ridiculous thing on the hitch Ironically =P

dont wrap or bungie saftety chains. twist them
good job...get a spare tire for that trailer...I just got the 5x10 to haul my Harley with my jeep...be mindful that the trailer tires are only rated for 50mph...
The max tow speed warning is because trailer tires are traditional rated at that speed.
I actually think these trailer wheels are for 55mph. I remember now blissfully glossing over that fact...*nervous laugh*
@@AntiParallali ST class tires are usually rated at 65, but that's at its rated weight. A combination of weight an speed heats the rubber up until it fails. With that little weight on them, they would probably be fine in to triple digits. I hauled my bike back from Kentucky in a similar setup, pushing 80 the whole way.
I think my rims had 55mph stickers on them to for some reason.
My big 5th wheel camper on the other hand, I try to keep it under 70 for the sake of the tires.
What was the difference in your fuel mileage? I got the tow bar and light kit for our CX3. Was going to use the car to tow the bikes down to Tennessee and West Virginia. But didn't have time to install it, and buy a trailer that I was looking for. So 4500 mile round trip in the truck at 11mpg... yay
I did a fuel efficiency estimate and it came out to about ~27mpg.
Love those Flying Eyes. Im gonna get a pair! Do you still have a promo code?
Yep! Still LALI ... there's a link in the description somewhere too.
@@AntiParallali Thank you very much! ❤
I may of missed this, does your car have a manual transmission or CVT?
@@CourageousCorgi automatic, not CVT. Not recommended to tow with a CVT.
Many cars sold in the USA are also sold in Europe and Australia. In the USA many car manuals say "towing not recommended". Yet the same car in Europe will have a 1500 kg. towing rating; often with a smaller engine. That is over 3300 pounds. Why? Europeans don't buy trucks the way Americans do. Car companies want you to buy bigger SUVs and trucks instead of using less expensive cars to move the same amount of weight. If you have the smallest car, and its European counterpart says it can tow 1000 kg, that is 2204 pounds.
Look at the ratios of vehicle weight to towing weight in trucks. Often it is nearly double. A safe calculation is that your tow vehicle should weigh 80% or more than the load you are towing.
That was cool
I have that bike I think it's 450lb😊
What kind of gas mileage did you get towing? We towed a slightly heavier trailer with a slightly heavier bike with our 2019 Rav4. Estimated 1200 lbs. Our gas milage was nearly cut in half at around 19 mpg but I drove a little faster than you. My truck gets about 14 mpg but I'd likely drive it the next time.
@@AntiParallali Not Bad...
Okay I took the time and I did a fuel efficiency estimate for one leg of the journey and it came out to about ~27mpg. I still think that's not too bad
IMO we Americans are misled on what type of vehicles are used for towing.
Looks like my corolla is towing my bike haha
For next time, you know Lali! You must cover Spaci so he doesn't get wet! ...
What is normal mpg and mpg with trailer and bike?
I did a fuel efficiency estimate and it came out to about ~27mpg. Usually I get 33-34mpg averaged out.
@@AntiParallali thanks so much, so a 20-30% loss in MPG, seems worth it to me. As my truck had 35" large off road tires and I ate burning them up on the HWY. I've added etrack and etrack wheel chocks to my 4x8 trailer and will try it out on my Forester. Two Tenere 700s is a bit tight on the 4x8, but I'm going to try it with my smaller dual sports first.
How come the Mazda doesn't have a nice name like Spicy boy?
My dad lovingly calls it the "Mazduca" if that counts 😂
@@AntiParallali cool name. and that does count 😂
hate towing... love putting the bike just in the back of a pickup (with a real bed, not all these dumb little 5 foot bed trucks) , so much easier than a trailer.
If I had the money for a truck I'd probably do that too, but this works for now!
Da' de ce? :))
Pentru o vacanta haha
You mentioned everything but tongue weight. Did you measure that! It is a critical factor...
Yep! Forgot to mention in video but I put it in the description
Sorry, but the world of motorcycling is for living adventures, discovering places with just you and your partner. You should have traveled all that way with your motorcycle, it is not always to visit points close to our house, here in Mexico we have gone from Mexico City to Monterrey only by motorcycle and it took us 4 days to get there, we went to Cancun it took us 3 days to get there. We arrived and it was beautiful, we lived the adventure, got to know new places, ran, enjoyed the wind, arrived at the hotel tired and the next day had breakfast and started riding again, the motorcycle is not just a toy that we just take out of a small box and play. Like a child, if you don't like to live the adventure, next time so you don't take risks, send your motorcycle by parcel and that way the rain won't affect it...I respect your way of living motorcycling
hy not use an A frame trailer for a motorbike lol
I thought about it but it was only 25lbs lighter, twice as expensive here, and my dad wouldn't be able to use my trailer if he ever needed it. This way I save some money and he can also use it for his yard projects/anything else we might need to tow in future
@AntiParallali yeah I guess in states you get plenty if rooms at your homes, we don't get huge gardens and garages unless rich as hell in the UK we live in little caves so not much rooms for trailers see hahaha
dont know why your using a trailer for?? lol
Because the MT07 is not an adventure bike and I don't want to arrive in pain. I have clip-ons on the MT07 and they make the riding position a lot more aggressive
@AntiParallali I have a tracer 7 what the hell is clip ons? Haha
