Cassie, the lady in the rocking chair is the constellation "Cassiopeia". She's not actually in a rocking chair but that's what he changed it to. The constellation Cassiopeia was supposed to be her on her throne with her head down. I think she was sad because her daughter was about to be sacrificed.

I've seen this movie many times, but I just noticed something recently. Right before Del is executed, he says, "I'm sorry for what I do." Right before John is executed, he says, "I'm sorry for what I am." John's statement conveys much more pain and regret. You can control what you do, but you can't control what you are. 😢

This movie leaves one in a _curious state,_ after viewing. Generally, one is glad to have _watched_ it, but it's _so sad,_ almost _immediately,_ you need to do something to make yourself _happy._

I did know what the movie was about the first time I saw it. My father was a big Stephen King fan, and this particular book of his came out in serialized form when I was a teenager, roughly 100 pages a month for 6 months. My mother, who didn't read much back then, started to read it too. When she got part 5, I started in and read the first four, took 5 after she was finished and grabbed part 6 first. The weirdest part for me was that it was a Stephen King movie that didn't take place in my home state of Maine. I knew it wouldn't but that was still the weirdest part for me, not the sudden turn to healing and whatnot.

This movie is a true masterpiece of cinema. Every cast member gave phenomenal performances and the story was perfection. Random thought for you, if John made Paul and Mr Jingles live so long by giving them little pieces of himself, how long had John been walking the world? How long would you have to live to forget how you got covered with scars? By the way, that mouse living so long is the equivalent of Paul living for about 2000 years or so.

John's "solutions" for Wild Bill and Percy were perfect. Wild Bill was on death row and gonna die anyway, and in fact suffered less than he would have on the electric chair. And Percy coughed out the tumor with the bugs and therefore wasn't given death a "death sentence", but instead put into both a mental space and a physical place where he could no longer cause pain and suffering to others. Great reaction Nia! It's very natural to want to try to fit a movie into a category or larger context so we better know how to think or feel about it. We try to figure out, is this a (real-life / supernatural / racial / political, etc.) movie? The Green Mile is definitely one of those movies where it helps to just take things as they happen, without trying to predict what's going to happen next or figure out what the larger context is. By the end, you realize it doesn't matter what category the movie fits into. It's just a powerful story, well told.

I think the movie is about suffering, especially suffering of innocent people. The suffering we cause each other (the murder of the young girls, the burning of Del), and the suffering due to other reasons (the brain tumor, seeing our loved ones die due to old age). The movie allows us to feel strong compassion and empathy for the suffering of the world, through John's ability to feel all the suffering of others and his desire to help ease that suffering. At the end we cry because we feel compassion and empathy for John's suffering, leaving us (hopefully) with more empathy for others; for how much suffering there is in the world. The most powerful scene for me is 13:30 and the execution of course, because the prison guards and John empathize with each other's suffering, trying to ease it for each other (John to Paul: "I know you're hurting and worrying"). The only thing that can bring some ease to suffering is our empathy and compassion for each other. To me, that's the point of the story.

"The math doesn't work out, does it?"
See, if we're _generous_ with the length of a generation, having a grown _son_ in _1935_ should provide him with grown _grandchildren_ around _1965_ who should provide him with grown _great_ grandchildren around _1995,_ and this movie came out in _1999._ So what Elaine has begun to _wonder,_ here, is along the lines of "Just how old _is_ this man?"

just some mathematical thoughts here, but i have extrapolated some info that may be interesting.
    year of story : 1935
    movie released in : 1999
    Paul's age in 1935 : 44
    Paul's birth year : 1891
average mouse lifespan : 3 years
average human lifespan : 75 years
    1999 - 1935 = 64 years
    64 / 3 = 21.33 times normal lifespan for Mr Jingles
    75 years * 21.33 = 1,599.75 years *_MINIMUM_* expected lifespan for Paul
how long had John Coffey been wandering the earth?

At the time I was a huge Stephen King fan and I read everything he wrote. So I knew what the movie was about before I saw it. Recommendation. To start ANYTHING that has Tom Hanks in it. Not only is he a great actor but he picks great films to act in.

@@NiaMakiReacts For Hanks besides the ones you mentioned Apollo 13(true story of astronauts trying to go to the moon) is really good. Saving Private Ryan.(ww2 Gruesome and what inspired Band of Brothers being made) No One does the 3 Davinci Code movies.(secret society involving actual Jesus' offspring theory that is somewhat believable) They were really big when they came out. Not a huge fan but Philadelphia(Lawyer? dying of aids) won him a best actor award. Captain Philips( Ship gets captured by modern day pirates) and Sully(Airplane that crashed in NYC harbor after hitting some birds) were good. Road to Perdition was good.(30's gangster movie) Sleepless in Seattle and You've got mail(cutsy love stories) Big(about a boy that wishes he was older fun movie) And a bunch of others that are good but not as good as these depending on your tastes.
Stephen King has a lot of books/movies that are less horror or very little like the two you saw. At one point he was writing like 2-3 books a year. He has over 70 books to his name. Delores Clayborn and Misery fit that mold real well. They are a little scary but NORMAL type scary. Stand by me no scary stuff at all and Hearts in Atlantis has very little. Gerald's Game is....interesting. LOL. Nothing super natural but a very unique situation the star of the movie find themselves in.

Nia, so many discussions are built on this movie, and during one of them with some friends, I was recently introduced to the theory that John Coffey = J.C. = Jesus Christ. Christ absorbed the sins of the world and died on the cross for it, next to two criminals. One was repentant for his misdeeds and the other was not. I never thought of it that way, it gave me great insight and it gives even more depth to the subtext found in Steven King's literature. Just some food for thought as you move forward.

Like, I believe in the right to die. If you're in constant interminable pain of which there is no relief and you've exhausted all other alternatives, I think everyone has the right to decide, "I'm done." At the same time literally every single time I see this I bawl my eyes out wishing John would have let them break him out. I have seen several reactors describe the Green Mile as the best movie they had ever seen, and they would never watch it again. Sorry Nia, but you failed the challenge in the first 30 minutes of the movie when Paul was reading the transcript and they showed John with the little girls. The movie takes place in the deep south, Louisianna, which accounts for the guards' accent and Del speaking Cajun French. The prison was an all-black unit, still segregated back then, with a few white trustees like Toot. Chief and Del had done some very bad things, the movie wanted to show that they were still human beings. When they used the electric chair, they would turn the power off and on till the condemned was dead. Executions as bad a Dell's were rare but did happen. Stephen King wrote the book and had it released in 6 parts because he was tired of people flipping to the end to see what happens.
