    Oh Ben, you would not believe the quantity of kale I grow every year. I have a giant tortoise, & Kale is a massive part of his diet.
    Last year I counted 145 Kale plants‼️🙈 which was ridiculous even for me 😂 I gave about 50 away & planted the rest, which has kept us going right up to today!
    Unfortunately due to one of the many storms we’ve had here in Scotland, a big spruce tree fell over & landed smack into my huge brassica cage 😩 and today we finally got around to removing it. Needless to say, the cage is caput, but miraculously the Kale underneath survived 😂

    Thank you so much for this info! My lacinato kale that was started and planted out very early spring has held up to some hard hits! Took the bug netting off for a bit (big mistake). Now it’s too tall for any hoops that I have. It is getting full sun now that the garlic is gone. I’m thinking it would come down to preference, but I’m wondering if I should keep it growing through August and on, or start more plants for fall and into winter.
    Do you think the amount of harvest would be better one way over the other? 🤷🏼‍♀️
    When space is an issue I drive myself a little nutty contemplating.

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  2 года назад

      You could start some more kale now, as an insurance policy. I've just done that, with a view to planting them next month. As for your existing kale, they may get damaged by caterpillars if you can't cover them. You may like to see how you get on - if they don't get eaten alive they should then carry on into winter, with a good frost killing off any remaining pests. But I would sow more now, just to be on the safe side.

    Never grown it before,bit I have been getting the 'grow your own' magazine which comes with seeds and it came with some. So we are going to try to grow it this autumn....it's curly kale so will see what happens. I have it in plug trays ATM and will pot on into 9cm pots so it can stay on my greenhouse shelving set,we have the door kept open coz of the heat we have,but that also helps with getting it used to being outside,less hardening off to do.asbits getting wind,sun and even rain,which we had last night,has blown in and let things moist.
    Waiting for all this heat to die back a bit,as everything I have plantes so far has bulted due to the heat and lack of water. I plan to add some manure to the grow bags before replanting in 3-4 weeks. Give it chance to break down a little and start to help the compost hold more water.

    Living on the coast in Britains most southerly point we get a lot of salt mists. I’m growing a heritage Hebridean Kale with purple leaves. (It originated in the 17th Century where it was a staple green in the northerly islands) It has survived the salt here but the 70 mph winds we’ve had this year has battered them a little. It tastes great btw.

    The only way I can eat kale is in soup, but it's delicious there! I blanche and freeze it, then throw it in my winter soups. I suspect the freezing makes it tender, and the blanching removes the "green" taste that I'm so adverse to. I tried growing kale last year but the caterpillars got it. Maybe I'll try the purple kale this year.

    Put some kale seeds in the ground today. I am expanding my garden. Its early spring here, hope when summer heat comes it will not kill my kale. Mulched it. I hope I wont over-water it. Only pests I face is aphids, but birds have been kind enough to devour them once they become aware of their presence. The birds don't eat the leaves though.

    I did kale for the first time and yes, it did grow.
    But, we have a wild pheasant comming in the garden and he likes kale too .. so I still dont know how the Toscan black is. Oh well, I will just try again and cover it this time.
    Take care 🙂 I hope everybody will have a great start into the new garden year. 🌻

    I Just recently covered my new garden with cardboard and straw, I'm having compost delivered, since the grass underneath hasn't had time to breakdown, should I just put my 12in raised beds on top of the straw, or pull back the straw and put the compost on the cardboard?

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  2 года назад +2

      Yes, you can just pop the beds straight on top of the straw and then fill with cardboard. The straw will get weighed down by the compost and will rot down with time. Of course, if you want to save some of that straw, then you can of course clear it away to use later on. Either way is fine.

    What do you suggest underplanting in the spaces between kale plants? I sowed seeds & transplanted last year far too late & am left with plants looking healthy enough, but now at only 4/5 inch maximum height in early March - how are they likely to develop? They are close to garlic.

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  2 года назад +1

      You could try interplanting with something fast growing - lettuce, radishes, salad onions, for example. Something that will grow quickly and be out of the ground before the kale needs the extra space as it reaches maturity.
