PixInsight - Basic One Shot Colour (OSC) Processing Workflow

  • In this video I run through the basic processing workflow that I use with an OSC image. This takes the image from the stacked image, through the linear state, the stretch and the final processing to the completed image.

    You do have to buy these tools but they're worth it and there are free trails for each if you're not sure.

    Thank you! Enjoyed this. I actually had a cone master just taken so I could follow along with you. Happy with my result. Registered my PI about 10 days ago so still feel like I’m drinking water from a fire hose, but some of it is starting to make some sense. Best holiday wishes from the Arizona desert.

    Thanks ! Excellent basic workflow for a beginner like me. I'm currently on the trial version of PI, but you've convinced me to pony up for the license.

      Glad you found it useful. I went down the same route and tried the trail version of PI first. It made such a difference in what I could do with my images that I had to get the full version.

    Great tutorial! The best beginner workflow video I have seen by far. Clear and logical. One question, may I know how could the process icons be organized on the right side of the workspace? Thanks and hope to see more content from you!

    I happened across this tutorial looking for an OSC processing workflow that I could make my own. New to PI. It just so happens I had 49 subs, 300 seconds, gain 120 of the exact same target, framed almost identically, using an FLT91, ASI294MC Pro and an Optolong L-eXtreme dual band that I had shot the previous night. Best processing I've done so far. Laid out very well and the 'how comes' explained. I got a little lost on the PixelMath section and just used the combine(stars,starless,op_screen()) command. Well done, sir! Looking forward to more of your PI tutorials. FYI: I had no glow around any stars using this filter. EDIT: I went back and watched the PixelMath section and yeah... easier.

      Glad it was useful. Some will get the halos around the stars, others won't, it seems to be random. The formula I use for recombining the stars into the image is: ~((~starless_image)*(~stars_image)) 😉

      @@dlindsay1797 I've always put the background image first, then the stars. I've not tried it the other way around until tonight and you definitely want the background first!
      Give it a go and you'll see what I mean. 😃

    You're better off using the background neutralisation in SPCC, define the preview as you normally do and select it in SPCC.

    Very clear step by step. Thank you so much! One think I have not been able to get a clear explanation of: How do the functions of the triangle and the box vary? Sometimes people drag the triangle to the image sometimes they just click the box. What's the difference in what they do?

      Glad it was useful for you.
      As for the triangle & the box;
      The box will apply the command to the active image on the screen.
      The triangle is labelled "New Instance" and has a couple of jobs.
      1. If you click & drag the triangle onto an open area of the screen, it will create a new instance of that process - a process button, which you can name as you want and use as a new process icon.
      2. If you click & drag the triangle onto an image you're working on then it will apply the command to that image. Handy if you have several images open on the screen.
      3. It can be used to transfer the settings from one process to another - like when you apply the STF stretch and transfer it to the Histogram.
      I hope that makes it a little clearer. 😁

    You don’t mention how you performed your stacking, was this also done in Pixinsight or did you use DSS?

      Hi Sarah, I generally use PixInsight for stacking. It takes longer than DSS, but I normally set it running overnight. I've made another video about the WBPP in PixInsight, if you're interested. 😉

      @@lochaberastro9752 Thanks for this, just found your channel. Can I ask a follow on question about how you stacked this: did you just have data for the dual narrow band filter that you mentioned, or did you also combine with data for an IRCut or light pollution filter? if you combined data from different filters I would be interested to know how you did this in WBPP and any tips that you can give, thanks!

      @@timburgess1528 The stack I used for this video was just the data from the Dual-Band filter, which is normal for me.
      You can combine it with a stack taken with just a UV/IR cut filter, but I would do this for the more natural looking star colours and then I would combine using PixelMath, rather then WBPP.
      You could remove the stars from the Dual-Band image using StarXT and replace them with the stars from the UV/IR stack using a simple "Dual-Band_background+UV/IR_Stars" formula in PixelMath. Making sure both images are aligned first of course.😉

    You should try running SPCC first.
    I’m a novice but watch loads of RUclips tutorials and it seems to work.

      You can run SPCC first, the workflow is a personal thing and you need to work out what works best for you.
      The only reason I don't run SPCC first is so I can remove any gradients and neutralise the background beforehand. This means I don't risk calibrating colours which shouldn't be there or the gradients throw off the calibration.

      Bonjour Patrick, L'outil Binning que j'utilise s'appelle en fait "IntegerResample" et se trouve sous "Processus > Geometry".

      The icons can be found at the following link, but please remember that they include all the processes I use, so if you don't have some of them installed then you'll see an error when you load the icon set. Just accept the errors and PixInsight will eventually load the icons you have an you'll be able to save these for yourself.
