I remember we had a substitute teacher in 3rd grade & she spelled Mississippi incorrectly. I raised my hand to let her know & the next thing I know I got a dry eraser thrown at my head (didn't hit me) but yeh not sure what her problem was 😅😅
I *think* they just dry out over time from exposure to air so that they just start crumbling when you try to put pressure on it and they stop erasing. At least that’s my theory from my elementary school days
