- 1999 TV commercial shows off the black and white camera peripheral for the Game Boy Pocket. This device was only capable of drawing 4 levels of gray, so the pictures taken are very rudimentary. The commercial shows the Game Boy Printer also and the animations the Game Boy Camera was capable of drawing on top of pictures that were taken. Having a camera with you in your pocket was novel at the time and apparently this device could turn photography into fun-tography.
The music used is a reworded version of "Smile, you're on Candid Camera".
This commercial aired during a 1998 showing of South Park.

Gameboy Camera turns bullies into friends, babysitters into teenage sex offenders, and an unemployed did with a son into an unemployed deadbeat dad who does nothing but plays with the gameboy camera with his son.

@@fuwameanssoft Yeah, but in the 90's people knew that this was a joke. It was understood that women were attracted to confident, socially dominant men (especially beautiful women) and so the idea of this 10 yr getting romantic interest from a woman that looked like that was an impossibility. It wasn't necessary to condemn it because everybody knew that it would never actually happen. I don't think that people in the 90's would have actually been supportive of actual relations between a kid and a near-adult. Everybody gets so offended by everything nowadays and takes everything so literally. Life wasn't like that in the 90's, there were very little restrictions on humor.

A lot of TV back then was about satirizing 50s and 60s culture. If you made a commercial like this today people wouldn’t get it.

And just like that, Game Boy Camera turned a babysitter into a pedophile. But it also taught a bully about laughter and friendship and got a father out of his depression after reading about a witness' death involving drug charges. Two outta three ain't bad, right?

+angusyjr I think it's safe to say that she was his babysitter. The boy looked like he was 8 or 9 and the girl looked like she was 18. Chances are, she probably went to prison for having sex with a minor in the aftermath of this commercial.

Thank you for uploading this. Haven't seen it in ages! The first time I saw this, I knew that it was parodying "Candid Camera". What a clever commercial!
Especially since CBS had a Candid Camera revival airing at the time this commercial aired. It came on after Kids Say the Darndest Things.
This is 1998, not 1999. I was obsessed with mine for about 6 months straight. I still remember the first time I got to try out the kiosk with my Grandpa at KB Toys

@kgoundan 👍 Definitely, I believe Kodak could have essentially become instagram if they didn't repress digital cameras shortly after their own company invented digital camera tech, and instead continued to pour research into/innovate in that way.
I remember this commercial, and even then I thought it was clever how they did a parody of the Candid Camera theme.
Gotta love when old unlit screens were always portrayed in a very clear and illuminated way - basically showing people, what they badly wanna have but don't get.
This is no issue anymore today, but only sometimes, you'd wish for an unlit screen, when you try to see your photo motive on a regular modern screen in blasting sunlight.......
I remember having played a round of Game Boy at night. I was sitting near a street light, and by having the right angle of the screen to it, the image was very clear. I still own an OG Game Boy Pocket where I do such things.

yeah i had this, i made my parents buy me pretty much every peripheral that was made for the GB. the best was the device that allowed you to play your games in color on an actual tv. i remember thinking that was the coolest thing in the world.

I like the contrast of this commercial's perfectly happy cheesy asthetic with the game's weird and eratic nature
Because of this commercial, I envisioned a Candid Camera type show called Game Boy Camera taking place in the world of video games. It's basically the same premise, but it's a Game Boy Camera filming the characters. Just like Smash Bros, non-Nintendo characters appear in the show too.
I wish commercials nowadays were fun like this

I remember my brother had collected all the Unowns in Pokemon Silver so we could use them with the Gameboy printer and I wasted all of the GB printer paper to print out stupid messages written in Unown font and pictures of my hamster that I had taken with the GB camera and stuck them all over our house. There are still a couple stuck on my old bedroom door in my parent's house 20 years later, lol.
