I think what really drives rumple to becoming a good person are in fact his sons. Yes belle does bring some light to his heart but he always find a way to fail her, but once he is fighting for a son, nothing brings him back to his darkness
Its because his love for his son drove him into the darkness the first time. He used thag darkness as a shield to protect Bae.. but over time darkness does what it always does and corrupts
The most tragic thing is for one moment, when for once Rumple did the right thing, the ‘right thing’ abandoned him in return. He chose good, and good abandoned him. So glad Gideon came back to him though I’m so proud of my son :))
I think a lot of people dont understand the concept of the dark one, no matter how strong you fight to be a better person the darkness is always in you and fight again the good side in you, in season 3 Rumple has the possibility to be a better person because of his son. I remember how the blue fairy said that Baelfire is a small light in an ocean of darkness and when he lost his son he had only Belle and her love was not so strong like Baes was, in season 6 he become finally the possibility to do the right thing because he has Belle and a new son and that give him enought light in his heart to be a better person
I think Rumpelstiltskin did best when he was needed. Bae never really needed him for emotional support. He was always more like Milah in personality, if more like his father in love. He was stronger than Rumpelstiltskin in so many ways. The one time Bae did need Rumpelstiltskin for more than simple love while they lived together was when Bae was corrupted by the dagger - and Rumpelstiltskin acted immediately to protect his son from the dagger's direct influence. All the rest of the time he just needed his dad to get out of his way, which made Rumplestiltskin feel unneeded. And the bean incident was too close to what happened with Rumplestiltskin's father. Belle didn't need Rumpelstiltskin either in the beginning. She was his emotional rock. She demanded he be better, but not because she NEEDED him, but because she had this vision of an amazing pure man behind the monster... when he knew that wasn't true. When Belle actually needed him to put the dagger aside when she died and later or they'd never be together in the afterlife, he rose up to be the man he needed to be to meet that need. Gideon, though, was truly the Dark One Junior. Controlled against his will by magic through his heart, much like Rumpelstiltskin through his dagger. Wanting to make the right decision but guilted, cajoled and tempted into making the wrong ones. Filled with fear and misery and lack of love. He was trapped by the Black Fairy. And Rumpelstiltskin couldn't, WOULDN'T let that pain he felt every day happen to his boy. And without Rumpelstiltskin's help, his son would be tainted, a murderer. Gideon NEEDED him from almost the moment he was born. And Rumpelstiltskin became the hero he needed to be for his son.
Rumple is the Superman of the magic world. Imagine what he could do with some kryptonite? This man is my favorite character in the series. Great actor. He does so many voices and personalities.
it's funny after all he's done, all the lies he's told, that she believes him, without a doubt, when he tells her that he made the right choice and failed.

The more I've thought about that the more I've come to realize that 1) he's never TOLD Belle what he did before, she always found out and then he had to confess the truth and 2) usually he always justified his actions rather than really owned up to them. Rumple's delivery here was the complete truth without her having to find out, and he owned up to it, not to mention his demeanor speaks volumes. Normally he'll answer her with a wall up to hide behind, hence the justification. But here, he was completely vulnerable in admitting failure. Belle has always been able to see the man behind the beast, so I think she can recognize when he's REALLY truthful better than anybody, especially when it comes to their son :P Sorry for the dissertation lol

THIS is Rumpelstiltskin's way of being a hero. Focusing on his family, on love. "I WILL do the right thing." I LOVE his redemption arc because it feels real- because I can use that to inspire my own life. To choose to be better for those I love. To choose forgiveness instead of anger, to try instead of "I can't," to abandon plans that are hurting myself or others instead of having to finish everything I start, and to give instead of taking. Belle, too- she learned to be tolerant of other people's views, and gentle and supportive instead of harsh and dismissive, kind instead of angry. Their bravery is a quiet one, focused on family and love. And THAT is why I love it so much- that they were broken and learned how to heal not only themselves, but help each other and leave a better world behind them in the process.

Ironic thing is delusion and force made Gideon in the beginning of the season, says he hates Rumple while he's not even the size of an almond and doesn't know a shit about the world outside of his mother's stomach😂and Belle is like "Ok, I will do what ever it takes to keep you away from your father!" in end and Gideon as a grown ass man, even if it was the curse, shouts to Rumple's face for real that how much he hates Belle and shuts him out everytime Rumple tries to speak rational! and still, knowing Gideon won't change his mind, still tries to say good things about Belle and make a better imagination of her for him. that says a lot about which one would probably be the better parent and why Belle no longer questioned Rumple's movements about Gideon👏👏👏

I've wanted to see Gold vs. Rumple since the Dark Swan arc, Season 6 had a lot of amazing moments and this scene just made me cry so much
