Reciprocating Pump working

Hello friends,
In Reciprocating Pumps, when the piston is moved in one direction, the water head of the piston is forced out of the cylinder and additional water is drawn into the cylinder behind the piston. These pumps do not have much application in construction work except as sludge pumps or diaphragm pumps to handle impure water.
These pumps have maximum recommended suction lift upto 7.3 metres. It attains low to very high discharge pressure. Volume of liquid pumped is generally small. It is bulky, heavy and difficult to handle. The rate of discharge is practically constant, irrespective of head, and is limited by the power of the pump.
