@@nolsp7240There were no extra points for children of faculty. I dunno if that changed after I left the country in 1993. A much higher score is required if you wanted to be in Diliman in a highly popular 'quota' course like engineering or accounting. Back then students who were not confident about performing well in the test played it safe by choosing another campus like Los Banos and a 'non-quota' course just to get in, but must maintain at least a 2.0 grade average to transfer campuses or switch courses. Another way in is by sheer talent: drawing test for the College of Fine Arts or auditions for the Music Conservatory.

Using shapes for abstract reasoning tells how a person thinks laterally under pressure and without relying on language or prior knowledge. It would really highlight a person's critical thinking and decision skills when placed on situations they've never encountered before. Pattern recognition is the most recognizable example of that, and that applies to many contexts.

The UPCAT is a highly competitive exam. It’s not just about achieving a specific score but about ranking within a certain percentile. During my time, students were ranked based on scores from the national pool. However, I’ve heard that this time, the ranking system is regional, which aims to encourage admission from all regions of the country. This means you only compete against test-takers from your region rather than the entire nation. That said, if you’re from a region with tougher competition, good luck!

I don't know the present upcat structure but when I was in high school, getting into UP and your favoured course was percentile based. Ergo the more popular the campus and course, the greater the competition will be.
A tactic my school employed was to list a campus you wanted, even if it was hard to get into, like Manila and Diliman... And chose an easier campus to get into as your 2nd choice, like iloilo, baguio, etc. The thought process is you can eventually transfer to any course and campus you want as long as you had good enough grades.
I listed UPLB as my 1st choice and iloilo my 2nd. I got admitted in Iloilo and transferred to UPLB the following year. I know some people who had decent UPCAT scores but didn't get into UP solely because of their campus choices. I know one student back then who didn't know better and listed Manila and Diliman as his primary and secondary choice.
Not sure if this is still how admission is done. I heard from a prof that because of the "no tuition" policy UP implements, competition has sky rocketed.

I'm in the honor society of my community college here and it was not a breeze; but it made it easier for me to apply to Cali grad schools. Just my thoughts...and experience.

I'm not from UP, but this type of entrance exam is common in the Philippines, and perhaps in other Asian countries as well. I live in Mindanao, and the most popular public school here is USEP. In the Engineering department, out of 100 students, only one or two usually graduate. On graduation day, it's always funny-only one or two students march to the podium, while the rest are still revising their thesis! 😂

25:30 That is because UPCAT is not really designed to determine your eligibility/ability. It is designed to weed out as much people as possible so as to only fill the limited slots. Even if every examinee in one year were to pass with extremely high scores, only a limited number of those will be admitted. They also look at your high school grades, which also has a cut-off. So even if you score very high, if you had average grades in even one subject, you're not likely to get in.

6:59 Good day. Correct me if I'm wrong because I think the correct answer in math number 118 is 300 php. For the very reason that if 2 audio tapes (each audio tape represented by x) cost 600 (2x=600; x=300) then each compact disk (represented by y) costs 900. Hence, 2/3 of the cost of compact disk is 600. The equation must be 2x=2/3 y. However, another equation based from the situation emerge, 3x+2y=1350. Consequently, if x=300 and y=900 then 3(300)+2(900) must be equal to 1350 which is not the case. But if x=150 and y=450, then 3(150)+2(450)=1350 which is correct. Hence, 2 audio tapes (each audio tape is represented by x) cost 300.

Years ago, my older brother applied to the PMA but the results didn't come out until August or September so my parents told him to apply to colleges so if he didn't get in, at least he wouldn't be too far behind. If he got in the PMA he could just drop out of whatever college he got into with zero repercussions from the parentals. As he didn't really care, he forgot about the testing date and went out with his buddies the night before. He took the UPCAT without any sleep, partyied the night before, and zero prep. He not only passed, he got into Civil Engineering, a quota course.

Is it still the same requirement for applicants of UPCAT? . . . ONLY the TOP 3 of the high school graduating class are allowed to apply for the UPCAT? . . . AND . . . also, the branch where you are assigned to enroll determines your ranking/score in the exam. As far as my knowledge is concerned, if your score is in the top bracket, you go to Diliman, then SECOND is UP Manila and third I believe is either Baguio or Los Baños. Is this still happening?
And does your Student number still starts with 2 digits, representing your year of enrollmen?

That’s less than a third of the actual length of UPCAT though. Haha, your final “score” is also 60% test and 40% high school GPA. And it is true, they subtract 1/4 pt for every wrong answer that’s why we’re told to skip a question if we can’t answer it.
Acceptance is based on a curve but given only around 12,000 students get accepted in all UP campuses each year, and you’re competing with ~100k applicants, it’s highly unlikely to pass with less than an 85% in the test.

  • @thenesisk
    @thenesisk 28 дней назад +1

Yes UPCAT is hard, but also most exams in the Philippines are freaking hard especially subjects with any type of mathematics due mostly to one simple instruction, SHOW YOUR SOLUTIONS/CALCULATIONS. haha if your answer is right but the solution is wrong, you won’t get that point. There’s also this thing called RIGHT MINUS WRONG. It’s basically counting all your correct answers and deduct the total number of wrong answers and that will be your final score. So glad I’m done with all of these. Haha

What makes UPCAT difficult isn't the test itself. It's that your score is compared to your fellow participants, and also, to the scores of the people going into the course you chose. This is the reason why a lot of students choose unpopular courses, and then just try to change courses (from literature to engineering etc etc) after a few semesters.

  • @neppy09

The difficulty in UPCAT is not just the questions but THEIR GRADING SYSTEM. In the past it’s “right minus wrong”, meaning the number of incorrect answers is subtracted from the no. Of correct answers. Which IMO makes it 2x tougher
So for Filipino, since you got 1 right and 1 wrong then it’s 0

P.S. I didn't know that UPCAT deducted a point for every wrong answer!

I took UPCAT in 2009. I don't know how they do it now. What we got back then was university predicted grade (UPG) and it was 30% high school grades (3 yrs) and 70% UPCAT (iirc). I think they're being nice so I want to shed light on how the UPCAT is severely behind state university entrance exams within the US. The major issue is it's literally textbook based not critical thinking. I passed the UPCAT back in 2013, but was given the choice to study abroad, which I took. I got three recommendations, University of Texas, West Virginia, and California. What I realized was taking their entrance exams was how modernized their academics were compared to UP....make no mistake UP is great but it's only standardized in comparison with community colleges state side. There is nothing wrong with community colleges, but there is a gap in specialization earnings. I graduated as a Kinesiologist at UT, then got my Doctorate of Physical Therapy at Texas Women's Uni. I ended up going back to the Philippines as a CI just to relax for a year, and I couldn't believe just how far behind modern medicine is in the Philippines. I'm wondering why this is like this and if students are aware?

Well, that’s unfair, you’re comparing a developing country’s modern medicine to the US - of course the answer is not going to be good. Most countries’ modern medicine will pale in comparison to the US.
And yes, UP must be like a standard community college ‘state side’ to you. This is because UP is literally a public school. It can only flourish and upgrade its facilities if the government sets aside budget for it. Plus there’s corruption and brain drain plaguing the country.
I get that your question is coming from a place of concern, but ma’am, this is not the US. 😂

I took the UPCAT 42 years ago. I honestly cannot remember a single question. Just watching this video made me feel that I was smarter before. I agree with you that the technology in the Philippines is definitely behind. However, I think it depends on the college. I graduated from my profession at UP. Our setting maybe backwards but the materials and equipment are at par. When I came to the US and studied at UCLA, I impressed the professors of my skills. I felt like I owe the skills I developed from my school and professors. The UCLA professors asked me several times which school I came from. It's actually good to know the basics first to understand the advance technology better. Plus, when advance technology fail for some reason, it's easier to think of alternatives. The Americans easily get stuck when technology fails. We can be proud to be Filipinos :)

Scholar ng Bayan Ang Ang tawag sa mga makapasa sa exam. I passed UPCAT 1972. BSEE graduate (1977) and now retired engineer(2018) in US. I also passed the EE exam in the Philippines and Professional EE/EIT engineering exams at the same time in 1991 here in US. I don’t remember any of the questions (UPCAT) and whether they hard or easy. I consider myself average student (maybe below because I had failing grades - 5 years engineering) I guess I’m just lucky in taking exams.
I just remember passing the UPCAT is just the beginning - maybe for an average student like me. I have a classmate who graduated summa cum laude and maybe that’s the reason it took me 5 years to finish engineering. Some instructors based their grades on the class performance - I had a score of 18% in one class but still passed.
I may also add that in engineering I noticed that some students are memorizing the formula. I believe that student must understand the principle behind the formula and must be able to derive it.
This video reminds me of my experiences in taking exams. Thanks.
Question: I’m assuming that you are high school graduate going to college. That you enjoy traveling before college.

Actually the test is relatively easy compared to other universities, but passing can be very tricky.
Passing UPCAT isn't just about the score, you need to be in the upper percentile of all examiners. Even if you get 2 mistakes in all tests and everyone else gets a higher score then you still don't pass the exam.
Each course can only accommodate a certain number of students and high quota courses usually take only about the top 5-10% of all applicants.
