He was from the princely noble family of Drăculești and was born in the early 15th century (1400s). Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the family took that name because Vlad's father was a member of the Order of the Dragon at the court of the Holy Roman Emperor. "Dracul" translates to "dragon". Vlad the Impaler was a military leader in the Romanian principality of Wallachia (not Transylvania, though he was born in what is now the region of Transylvania) was rumored to have drank his vanquished enemies' blood mixed in with his wine.
