- RUclips has moved the comments section to the right of a video, and pushed the suggested videos to be underneath the video player. This RUclips update has changed the entire RUclips watch page, breaking the old iconic layout. Am I the only one who absolutely *HATES* this update? I've always liked comments in the bottom. It's claustrophobic on the side, but the videos on the side were fine, they were the perfect size to fit. I hope someone makes an extension to revert this.
Coming back a month later, I realize I'm very much not alone with this.

Yes this is TERRIBLE. I’d hate seeing those vids there where the comments should be. RUclips is getting worse day by day bro.
I don’t understand who is doing this, I bet they’re going to t those recommendated videos on the bottom into shorts as well and then not even comment. It discourages people to comment also, it’s so inconvenient and ugly.
Edit: I luckily never had the update actually happen to me yet. My comments and sidebars all look the same and good thank goodness

This is functionally and aesthetically worse for the users in every way. It's only been changed to increase recommendation real-estate and improv user retention. I hate it so much.
It's not even good for that. While watching a video I can occasionally glance at all the other recommended videos youtube wants me to watch quite easily. But with it being below the video instead I only get to see the top half of 4 thumbnails rather than 9 full ones to the side. Even when scrolling down because of the increased thumbnail size a fullscreen is only 12 recommendations. That is slightly more but my eyes are having to move all over the screen for that.
I just hate this layout because of thumbnails that are distracting, like a guy just staring at you while you watch.
I wish they would at least keep the title and likes below the window. That's so important to youtube's identity in my opinion.

using the theater mode might help you since it'll force the thumbnails of said videos a bit downward, but yea, can't agree more with u, this new layout is disgusting
Some of those thumbnails are ads and that's like the reason for the change.
I hate having all the video thumbnails so visible since some of them sometimes contain SPOILERS to various things I'm into (movies, games, etc) or contain certain things I seriously don't want to see. This is the second worst update they have ever done (the first worst update was them making it where I can't see the dislikes anymore).
I love how RUclips just decides to randomly change the UI once in a while for absolutely no reason
There is a reason tho, there is probably a developer team working on youtube updates, and they have KPIs to report certain number of developments in order to keep their job. It reminds me of the huge improvement at my company, they removed the location from the outlook name cards, so you do not know where the person is sitting that you are talking to, which is important for such a huge company due to time zones, cultural things, and to know if that person is actually sitting in the country where you have some tasks. I mean you can find it out, if you click like 4-5 times. Or they just changed the order of the names and removed the coma from between the first name and family name, they sold it as a huge huge improvement, noone cared actually, but they could report, present something... wow.
devs need projects. This was probably some team's project for months in the hope it would get more video clicks

It's a horrible change. There is less things to click on and it forces users to scroll the entire screen in order to continue viewing recommended videos. Bad design.
This new layout makes reading comments almost impossible - it moves YT from a social platform to just another streaming service.

first they stopped rewinds ( it's cringe but it's tradition ) second they removed dislikes now they are making comments less relevant. youtube is trying to step away from the thing that made it popular in the early days

To be honest, I don’t like the new layout that much. I would prefer the old one. They should add an option that allows you to choose the layout you want to use. This option should enable you to switch from sideways to below.

It's so bad. I have to zoom in to about 300% for the comment section to feel usable on an ultrawide monitor, but that just makes all the thumbnails even more obnoxious.

Not really sure about it, the change does look bizarre to me. Although I always use RUclips on mobile, I can’t imagine having that being the new layout. It doesn’t feel right to me
YT deliberately discouraging to post comments, first dislike option and now this.
Also discouraging people from reading comments (it's pretty hard for some people to read the comments shifted over to the side in such a cramped way like this. There are even others commenting how they already have vision problems and this new layout is making it very difficult for them). Makes me wonder if they changed the comments section layout because of what's coming this November and they want to discourage people from reading and posting comments as much as possible for whatever notorious reasons.
This is awful, I have vision issues so squishing the description/comments over to the side of the screen makes them practically unreadable for me.
sign out and sign back in and the old format will be back!!!!
To solve the problem change to video played in cinema mode on PC I change the format with plugin by inspect open in read mode by pressing right click to enlarge the text and comment section!
All I had to do was sign out and sign back in and the old format was back. I sure hope that works for others.
OMG it's the worst. Talk about not understanding your customers. As a UX/CX Designer myself, I have to tell you that this "new UI' will go down in my books as one of the worst things I have ever seen. This will end up printed in UX textbooks someday as a 'what not to do' example of putting business objectives 'increasing watch time' above the needs and wants of your customer base. Just awful. If anyone has any thumbs that I can borrow, please send them to me, as I only have two thumbs to give this 'New UI' two thumbs down. It's as if YT has not understood that their platform is not simply a streaming service, but rather a place where people come for community. To sideline the comments section and make it an inconvenient part of the user experience is to completely misunderstand why people value content on this platform. This is a FAIL of epic proportions and that's before we discuss YT insulting the viewer's intelligence by assuming that they are so fleeting that they can't even be trusted to watch a video and then return to their home page or select another video to view without YT cramming it down their throats while they are trying to enjoy a video that they 'the user' has already selected. Me....SMH 🤷♀

Old youtube layout better then new one
I hate this update. I cannot believe it cannot be changed back.
I came to this comment section hoping to find a way to change it back since it's now making it extremely awkward to both read and post comments (and I really hate having the recommended videos so huge and visible since some of them contain SPOILERS to movies, games, etc, and some of them contain thumbnails I don't like for various reasons). Sadly, it doesn't look like it can be changed back in a natural way without someone creating an extension of some sort.
"RUclips is a video platform site, you wanna prioritize showing videos".
But the comments are what we read first. Then we play the video.
Bingo, that's the reason why. Comments are debunking the narrative youtube supports. That's the reason why they removed the dislike button. They want to make it difficult or inconvenient for us to participate in comments.

me i have a video on a old beta push, want from few views to 15000 each day. it was horrible.
i wondered why that stopped, was thinking clone video just saying install enhancer for RUclips to get old lay out back.
but via here they rolled back.
thank goodness because all paid channel where so far up youtube defending it they couldn't see day light.

For those of us with bad eyes and prefer reading the comments, it's VERY difficult to read and comment on.
but the comments are so small. Parts are cut off of words and I cannot make the comment section bigger. The new is too distracting now
Even worse. Before when the video suggestions were on the side, you had to manually load more, which is a good thing. The new layout not only has the thumbnails four times larger, but when you are reading comments it will autoload more videos into the page, tanking the GPU. My brower has nearly crashed multiple times. I have a feeling the newhire programmers may not know what optimization is.
I am left eye dominant so I am having the same problem as you. Even while writing this, it feels like the new video suggestions are taking up most of my view and it is so distracting. I am usually on my tablet or phone so today is the first time I have seen it on my laptop and I don't want to download a bunch of extensions just to get it back to normal but, well, you got to do what you got to do.
This feels off, there have been many changes that don’t feel right.
This video reminded me that dark mode youtube isn't the default look. White mode is insantity to me

If a site that I engage with daily makes huge, sweeping changes taht are not just aesthetic but limit/alter the way I'm used to seing teh information, it's disruptive not helpful. This layout is the opoiste of helpful as I frequently use YT for research and being able to see reccomended videos while watchign one has been essential.
Now look at this comment. It's not actually that long, but with the new layout it's a big fat block of text and no one will read it. Big fail on layout.
The expand feature is great because you can keep watching the video without having to scroll the entire video out of focus.

Happened to me a couple of days ago. It makes interacting with comments basically unusable. I think RUclips is going the way of Imdb and might start removing comment section all together.

How I hate it. I actually consider to stop using youtube totally - or as much as it is possible nowdays - just because of this. Comments are barely visible, hard to read it. All the videos below are just much more distracting.

It's like they looked at what Disneyfilm and Wizards of the Coast were doing and thought "WHAT A GREAT IDEA! LET'S DO THAT!".
I had this for about a week and its gone back to normal now. I personally don't like it. It demotes comments to being something RUclips is almost hiding at the side of the screen. Comments are important! they removed the dislike button, now its like they are removing the comments!

Thanks for the explanation. I like the Expand option because it allows you to scroll through the comments without the video going out of sight.

It's awful, like they are trying to discourage reading comments and commenting. That can hurt content creators because less comments is less engagement.
The other negative side is that the Title of the video is invisible, you have to move the screen to see if you are watching the right video, totally uncomfortable
my muscle memory is gonna screw up (i also think this is REALLY damn ugly too)
The new layout is cool and stuff, but the title and description in the bottom of the video makes sense. The wider titles, descriptions, and comments are better because they are wide, and yeah.
Also I think having the title below the video is super important to having it still feel like youtube.

Why would a $2T company make a change like this? It's not a mistake... They want you watching more videos immediately after viewing the comments! The more they can keep you hooked here, the more money they make off your attention.

This layout is the reason why I like desktop RUclips, guess I have to use the app
They don't care about comments, they care about keeping you on the site
Different users have different ideas of what RUclips is for. Some people, such as myself, see it as a way for viewers to interact with the video's author over the topic shown in the video. They would not like this new layout because it reduces the space for this sort of interaction. It smacks of December 2019 when RUclips got rid of comments on vintage animation and vintage toy reviews because kids might watch.

Be prepared if RUclips removes comments section.
This is why i like how it is handled on the tablet version. When you open a video there, the video is on the upper left corner with the recommended videos on the right and the like/dislike and other stuff below the video. However, instead of comments right below the likes, there is a button to open the comments, which appears on the side, and that way you get to see the comments at the same time as the video while not having thumbnails at the bottom which I think looks ugly.

i watched in theater mode instead of fullscreen, now i keep seeing other videos are the bottom of my video its really distracting and annoying . Wish we had the option to change it back to normal
As a person commenting from 2022, I think the current layout is far worse than the COVID-19 pandemic.

You can expand the comments and still watch the video while you scroll and read them. If you don't expand the comments, when you scroll down to read them, the video goes off the page as you scroll.
I despise this update so much. Why does RUclips keep adding updates most people hate? First they removed dislikes then don't let people use adblockers now this. Whyyyyyy 😭

I hate this layout and hate how they force it on us and odn't give us the option to pick the one we want in settings. It is so stupid to have the comments beside the video since I will be watching it and not reading the comments. Since they are on the side now its distracting and makes me miss some of the video

My layout has been switching on and off from this for months and it pisses me off so much when it happens
I don't want to know why. I want to know how to switch back to other videos on the side. This new format combined with the change to how we view our playlists, means that the only video easily available in a playlist is the first one on the list. The alphabetizing of the playlists was good but when you click on the playlist, the first video starts to play. That was still workable because the rest of the play list scrolled along the side and I could easily chose the one I wanted. With the advent of comments replacing videos on the side, there is absolutely no way I can find to easily find the exercise video I want to do today! This is BS.

On an iPad, the comments are a button and when you press it it opens over the video recommendations.
NGL this change does make sense as now 4 videos are loaded per row, instead of just 1. However I don't have the feature yet.
