Starring: Melissa Barrera, Paul Mescal, Rossy de Palma, THE DOC
Benjamin Millepied’s CARMEN is a gritty modern day tale, with a majestic score by Nicholas Britell, and dream-like dance sequences that evoke magic realism. The story follows a young and fiercely independent woman who is forced to flee her home in the Mexican desert following the brutal murder of her mother, another strong and mysterious woman. Carmen survives a terrifying and dangerous illegal border crossing into the US, only to be confronted by a lawless volunteer border guard who cold-bloodedly murders two other immigrants in her group. When the border guard and his patrol partner, Aidan-a Marine with PTSD-become embroiled in a deadly standoff, Carmen and Aidan are forced to escape together. They make their way north toward Los Angeles in search of Carmen’s mother’s best friend, the mercurial Masilda and owner of La Sombra nightclub - a sanctuary of music and dance. Carmen and Aidan find both solace and their unwavering love for each other in the safety of Masilda’s magical refuge, but time is running out as the police hunt closes in.

looks unique and entrancing. again, a first-time director. as a fan who's been following paul from the beginning, it's an utter delight to see him choose his projects and just flourish in them.
they paid you to say this huh
I just saw this movie and I loved it.
Passionate from the guts,
dramatic but hopeful,
pure and unpredictable as life itself.
Excellent soundtrack and choreography.
Yeah, I thought the music and choreography in the fight scene were brilliant.
That’s literally my dance teacher in the first scene where she stomps on the wood. She teaches at Chatswood public school and went to broadway to receive an award for outstanding choreography. I’m in her dance club and freestyle group and she’s amazing.
why are they hiding paul’s american accent SO much in the trailers i want to HEAR
I remember when he did a play over Zoom in 2020 that people were mixed on his American accent. Perhaps it may not be what they want here and are covering a weakness.
@@PatkaBoy831 hes been doing a street car named desire and just got nominated for an oliver award ( he is american in the play )
I hear it's horrible. Anyway it is Melissa's movie.
Why??
I thought he was Irish?
Irish dude + Mexican chick = 🔥 🔥 🔥 ❤
Just saw this in theaters and it was absolutely incredible! I got lost in this beautiful story and I never wanted to leave. I definitely recommend checking it out.
Was the movie only in Spanish? My local theatre is playing it but it’s only in Spanish…
@@Kevin-yl8uz It's mostly english. The Spanish dialogue is subtitled.
Your 🦁
wow this looks incredible. It’s like a mix of Almodovar, Villeneuve and Sorrentino. super hyped!
melissa barrera, paul mescal and rossy de palma in a movie? count me in
my thoughts exactly
Melissa Barrera and Paul Mescal are stars in the making
I do miss movies about dancing. This looks promising!
the background scores,the chemistry...
It’s Nicholas brittell- aka the composer for the theme music for succession
This looks amazing. I can’t wait to see how dance is used to tell this story.
We know this is going to be a full retelling of the opera 'Carmen' with very little in common with it, but we know the main thing, Carmen is destined to be loved and Carmen is destined to die. But even if that is her destiny no one will ever make her give in, she was born and will die free.
I don't think it's supposed to be a full retelling. I don't think it ever could be, given the path they've chosen. It's an interesting angle, though!
Nice to see Rosy De Palma in an American production 👌
What American production?! It's a French-Australian film.
Let’s hear Paul Mescal sing!
Paul Mescal is an art.
I read the description of this as “more like the World’s Horniest Perfume Ad Starring Paul Mescal”. Then I watched this trailer. It’s not wrong.
😂😂
Paul Mescal? yes please!!!
Melissa Barrera ....i love her so much
She is a great actress have you seen her in scream 2022 and scream 6 yet 😊❤
Way back in the 80's I saw a TV broadcast of the opera by Bizet. Not long after, I saw Carlos Saura's adaptation of the story, told in Spain, danced out in Flamenco. This looks like a fine new take. I'll be there.
Either I'm getting the wrong idea or this is a retelling of the novella and opera 'Carmen', and that like Carlos Saura's 1983 dance film before it, it's making a story set in France but told by two Frenchmen authentically Spanish.
I'm in.
I don’t get why this movie wasn’t a hit in the states? Movies like this used to make a killing at the box office and mtv awards
I swear if they don’t try to cast this dude as the new wolverine I’m punching errr body.
The visuals and music are so good, i hope the film is as mesmerizing as the trailer
another paul mescal class performance
There are so many wonderful movies out there..if only we open our minds and experience them!
I got chills 💖 looks absolutely stunning!
Paul Mescal ❤
Why u guys keep mixing flamenco with Mexican culture?
In México people also dance flamenco, cause: COLONISATION
Ignorancia geografica
Upon first watching the trailer: "Wow, this cinematography is unbelievably good, dude is ripping off Terrence Malick in the best way"
Checks imdb: "Oooh, Jörg Widmer is cinematographer, dude who shot A Hidden Life and operated the camera on all Malick's movies since The Tree of Life".
That's all I need to know to see this one ASAP.
This looks great and very epic I can't wait to see it and mailssa barrera is a great actress if you have not yet she is great in both scream 2022 and scream 6 she is great in both of them 😊❤
This looks stunning!
Looks brilliant
Looks like Paul is beefing up to be the next James Bond.
This is kinda like in the heights meets west side story abit and that makes sense seems Melissa was in in the heights as well as this 1 so yeh good idea good job
For Gladiator 2.
no he is not..henry cavill or aaron taylor johnson are the top 2 for the next james bond nothing else better than them.
This looks great
ROSSSYYY REINA ya habían tardado en Hollywood en ficharte si eres la mejor
SCREAM the musical/prequel of Sam's story...
it's heartbreaking watching the trailer knowing how this story plays out. This is gonna be a film for those that get "it"
You mean people who know the story? Doesn't look like that's gonna matter much at all. Also this isn't Darren Aronofsky, I don't think we need to be literary experts to grasp what's going on here.
Beautiful film
We are pumped for this to drop!
This definitely seems like it is based on the opera Carmen.
I have cousins in a Mexico who studied years of Flamenco growing up. I think it’s like an alternate to ballet classes that some girls in USA have growing up. It is related to the culture though as Mexicans are a mixture of both Native American and Spaniard colonization. There is Mexican folkloric dance as well. I haven’t seen this movie. I want to think that with the title there is a relation to the opera Carmen and seems like a modern Mexican American version from what I can guess from the trailer. Which by the way Flamenco comes specifically from around Andalusia (I’m no Spain expert either) but I know the boats with the conquistadors pretty much went from Andalusia to Mexico. So it makes sense that this dance would find its way there too eventually.
No you don’t, “flamenco” is extremely rare in Mexico. We don’t do that at all and those who do really have to look for studios were the teacher is almost always a Spaniard we have our own folkloric dances unrelated to flamenco. Like you people need to either learn about Hispanic culture or leave us alone all together if you are going to make a mess, “flamenco” is genuinely not a thing in Mexico it isn’t part of our culture.
@@ericktellez7632 my cousins who studied this lived in Piedras Negras Coahuila by the Eagle Pass border. Where are you from? Perhaps it’s a class thing ? They went to private school from early years and my family does have verified Sephardic heritage but that was only verified a few years ago. They grew up in the 90s and they didn’t study other dances of any other culture… my ancestors have been in northeast Mexico for over 500 years…
@@ericktellez7632 and what the hell do you mean by “ you people” flamenco is not from Mexico but it’s very definitely a thing. My ancestors founded Monterrey, I can trace back to Diego de Montemayor among others…
Did you even see the movie?
Lol why did I just finish the opera and have this in my algorithm. Hopefully this Carmen movie has a happy ending.
God how can he keep getting hotter
big Nicholas Winding Refn energy. Into it.
Is Melissa Barrera a good actor??
Sam after abandoning Tara in Scream 2022:
PAUL!!!!😍😍😍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😎😎😎
It's not based on the opera Carmen by Bizet.
This looks Excellent..
Melissa Barrera excelente actriz me encanta ❤❤
Melissa 💕
These movie looks interesting
Oscar 👏👏👏
An arthouse version of Step It Up. 😆
Has the same vibe as the movie Ema.
Saw this trailer in La Ursurpadora the Musical
The coloring and editing reminds of Euphoria a little.
Fire island it’s great movie from blue pictures classics.
This film is just about perpetuating a stereotype created by Anglosaxons and other people about the 'Spanishness'. Carmen by Mérimée and later the opera by Bizet is just a romantic and unreal vision of what Spain was on the 19th century. It was basically propaganda against Spain, trying to present it as 'something different', 'not like us', something passionate and gipsy. It was a try to leave Spain aside of the modernity. Now, they keep on with that idea full of lies and inventions but making it wider and confussing people even more, mixing flamenco with Hispanicamerican people and traditions. They move the plot to Hispanic America and they pay an actress from Spain and others from Hispanic America to make it everything even more confussing so people cannot tell the difference between Spain and Hispanic America. The aim is basically the same as in the 19th century: to confuse people, to create and idea of exotism and to denigrate Spain (and also the countries in the Hispanic world now). These actors and actresses should be more conscious of why the story 'Carmen' was created and how harmful was for Spain (of course these actors are not very educated) Now, it is going to be harmful for all, also for Hispanic Americans, presented as 'different', 'exotic', 'passionate'. And worst of all, they themselves believe these lies later.
Calm the F down. I saw the film. Mexico is not portrayed in a bad light. The only negativity is around the racist Americans who hate Mexicans.
WOW. Interesting comment. Everything has an agenda. I do not know anything about this particular issue but pretty much everything else is a twisted version of truth, or outright lies; so I can see where this would be as well. But lets not forget that it is the war mongering criminals who are in places of power who make up all these stories. Being anglo saxon has nothing to do with it. If you arent in the big club, you are just a pawn on the field of this planet just like everyone else, no matter where you come from.
Can someone please explain the ending to me?? 😭🙏🏽❤️

I probably would't go to a theater to see it, but I would definitely stream it.......

Is this a musical?
It should be a musical, yeah

Natalie Portman's husband directed this movie.
The trailer here is a million times better than the final product. Disappointing 😢
OMG
This movie is evidence TRUMP is right about Mexico.

O flamenco ficou só no começo a carmem dança mais ñ flamenco pelo que vi
Dancing movie? No one asking for this
I thought this was gunna be an adaptation of the opera and have the music of Carmen. How disappointing
Menudo bodrio se avecina ,que Rosy de Palma se haya involucrado en esto indica que anda muy mal de pasta pq sino no lo entiendo😮
"Though described as Millepied's take on Bizet's opera of the same name, it is "a complete re-imagining" that ignores the opera's plot and setting; all that remains are "selected lyrics" from the opera's libretto sung in the original French by a choir as background to one scene between the two leads."
So, they're essentially piggybacking on the famous opera's name instead of making their own thing and seeing if the audience loves it. Disappointing.
The Opera was itself based on a book and the story has been told a thousand different ways. Why not one more?
@@isadorastrokes Did you not understand? This is not the story retold. This is a different story that is just using the established IP's name. Nothing else, just the name. It's not an adaptation. It has nothing to do with anything related to Carmen. It's an original work that wants to grab attention in a very cheap way.
