Begonias are not normally thought of as tolerating long dry spells, but in the Campos Rupestres habitat of Minas Gerais, Brazil, that's exactly what has evolved - a succulent-stemmed Begonia with leaves like strap leather, Begonia grisea.
Also featured here are Cipocereus minensis and a number of other remarkable and epically-cool plants that can tolerate the long dry winters in this rocky tropical environment.
Thanks to.my friend Dylan Zoller for his help in production and his Bromeliad Obsession and also for tolerating me during extended periods in Brazil.
Your contributions support this content. It sounds clichéd, but it's true. Whether it's travel expenses, vehicle repair, or medical costs for urushiol poisoning (or rockfalls, beestings, hand slices, toxic sap, etc), your financial support allows this content to continue so the beauty of Earth's flora can be made accessible to the rest of us in the degenerate public. At a time when so much is disappearing beneath the human footprint, CPBBD is willing to do whatever it takes to document these plant species and the ecological communities they are a part of before they're gone for good.

This brand is so nice we got a few matress and it feels real nice to sleep on and what-the-shit, much better than the pallet Al makes me sleep on when I stay at his basement apartment when I visit Chicago nice)
How is that Al?? Mycology Al???? He looks COMPLETELY different than Mycology Al, I feel gaslit😂😂😂
@@i-love-comountains3850 totally different Al lol. You're thinking of Alan
You sold your soul to the mattress gods bro
@@catherinedufresne3543 no I didn't junior I sold two minutes of airtime on a small educational comedy RUclips channel to them and Al made a hilarious bit in the process. And it goes to pay Al and I for busting our asses repeatedly to put this stuff out. Settle down for chrissakes.
@@CrimePaysButBotanyDoesnt*puts down pitchforks (I have 2 of them)
These are really priceless records that ecologists will be able to use to protect biodiversity for the ages.
Yeah they should all be backed up physically ideally along with a raspberry pi and a screen or something so that folks can view it as long as there's power. Why not include a solar panel and a lifepo4 battery for good measure as well..
That's my hope. In fifty years a lot of the places I've made videos won't be there anymore, most likely, the way the human tumor of development is growing.
Jusht looking to add to my exshellent collectshion
and with a bit of humor and sweetness thrown in with the records for good measure 🫶
You actually believe that the stuck-up "intellectuals" will look at a RUclipsr for information? Most of the scientists, and especially the ecologists and biologists, have their heads stuck so far up their asses that they can't see the light of day. The majority of them are stuck doing monotonous work for NFPO's or idiotic scientific research that has no importance for nature or conservation. In fact, most scientific research I've been involved in are actually deleterious to the environment with the amount of polluting garbage they (the "scientists") bring in the field. I prefer the work that CrimePaysButBotanyDoesnt over that of the scientists of our generation.
This is the only channel where I sit through the ads instead of fast -forwarding.
Sometimes I watch them twice.
@@GeertSawek Well that's where they get ya.
Same 😂
Al is the new face of Birch
Non-resting Birch face 👀

There is zero chance that's Al, wtaf are you smoking😂😂😂
Came for the botany, stayed for the ads
Truly!
AND DATS HOW DEY GETCHA! 💪💥
I work on deforestation and land conversion issues and these are extremely at-risk ecosystems, thank you for highlighting them. There are three major biomes in Minas Gerais, the Mata Atlântica, the Cerrado and the Caatinga. They are Tropical Dry Forests, only one third of which still exists in the Americas. Although sustainability issues have a hope under President Lula as opposed to Bolsonaro, many ecosystems in Brazil are being pushed to, and likely past, their tipping points. Less than 50% of the original ecosystems are intact in the Cerrado, at most 25% of the Mata Atlântica remains, and it is very fragmented because of extensive urban development, and about 50% of the Caatinga has been converted to human uses. Badass plants may be fire-adapted but none can compete against land conversion, most of which is for agriculture.
I always love your videos but I especially appreciated those you did in the southern US where they are destroying the ecology to build the stupid wall, as you gave context on the land you were exploring and the local risks to the flora and fauna. It would be fantastic if you could have an informed local Brazilian do that here, especially if there is more to come of your Brazilian travels!
Your audience may be a bunch of delinquents, or at least I am one, but I think we are a good group, and the more you arm us with information, the more we will use it. Thank you for all you do!!
this channel is "full of piss and vinegar" as my mom used to say, while cracking wise about the insanity and ridiculousness of it all, better to laugh at problems than cry over them she also said. so I guess this channel is my mom. hahaha. I learn so much here about the world's botany as Tony and Co. pokes holes in the systems that the "powers that be" have used to usually destroy nature for profit. Killed my lawn when I moved in this place... I learn alot from comments too. Best luck to You.
Latin Americans just need to slow down on the breeding. Humans need development and farming to survive, so I get where Bolsanaro was coming from, but the growth is unsustainable. Meanwhile in the Anglosphere, Europe, and the more modernized parts of Asia we are seeing sub replacement birth rates which are a whole different problem due to different cultural values and economic pressures.
Access to free birth control and free education for all the people, is an issue we need to shout out about in ALL of the Americas. 👍 Right on, dude. ✌️🕊️
@@ANPC-pi9vu the ecofascism here is pathetic. y'all deep throat Malthus like it's your job.
@@zkkitty2436
What fascism, retard? I said that sub replacement birthrates are also a problem. That said, third worlders are doing themselves and their countries no favors by popping out all these mouths they can't even feed. It's called common fucking sense and personal responsibility, but nah, you don't think for yourself, you just pick a team and commence with the wanking.
I want to eat those scrumptious-looking blue fruits! X3
They will quench ya! They're the quenchiest!
I suddenly have the urge to buy a birch mattress for some reason.
Which species?

That place is incredible. It seems counterintuitive that such a harsh environment could be hone to so much diversity. Banger after banger after banger. I could watch you wander around there all day.
lemme tell ya, i watch all the youtubers. all of em. But you and Al put together the best adverts I've ever seen. not to mention great content, you guys are so full of character, love you brothers!!!
That's how they getya
That grape smell from the stevia relative might be from methyl or dimethyl anthranilate. Which is also a bird repellent.
Really interesting habitat. Would be great to go back during the end of the rainy season and see what those plants look like after they've had a chance to recover from the drought stress.
So impressed with your video editing. You include so much information with your words (terminology) and the text you add to the video. Makes it easy to look thing up or write information down on points that I find interesting.
That's my hope. These videos are supposed to feel like classes. Hopefully everybody who watches learns at least a little something. And should anybody want to dive deeper, I try to make it easy and put the resources up there.
God help me if I needed a mattress, I'd definitely buy one from Al.
Al can definitely get you a discount mattress.
Man, Brazil is like a botanical fever dream
Giant desert blueberries! Who else is showing us stuff like this? And knows enough to tell us how it tastes? The landscape is stunning, pages of stone ripped out of history, lying on the floor with the still-intact books they fell from.
8:47 The Rhyncospera are so Damm unique. I saw some in The Big Thicket, Texas recently growing alongside Pitcher plants and rare native orchids
My god that was intense 🤣
Im on a heavy microdose and the beginning of this video really had me on edge
You don't feel a micro dose. You just took a dose bud😂
A heavy microdose is just a dose
@@WillOfTheFungalNetwork well I'm taking it as I would a microdose, and if I wanted a dose dose I'd take 3g+, my heavy micro is just .5-.8g

Awesome
That new age massage parlor music sounds oddly familliar
The Begonia tree is pretty awesome.
the best commercial plug on Birch Mattresses 😅
This is the best ad I have ever seen...
gotta love those ads. makes me want a Birch mattress
Got excited immediately when you mentioned Alcantareas and was not disappointed by the vid. I love bromeliads and some of my favorite plants I own are two A. imperialis, you gotta respect the sheer volume of water they can hold.
I think this is the only channel where I watch through the whole ad read
Today, i identified Calystegia sepium, what a beautifull flower and its grows evrywhere around my house, Thx Botany in a Day , u changed my life!
I adore AL's commercials. He's a fuckin' gem.
@28 wow that’s such a good flower to just find outside.
As maybe the biggest cactus fruit fan in the world who has always been amazed by the crazy fucking fruits in South America that I still don't know that much about I was insanely hyped for this video. Thank u Joey more Sclerocactus content soon pls
Informative educational and entertaining a winning combination.
Welcome to Brazil!!! Minas Gerais its a masterplace to endemic species.
Tony ya really helped me recover just now from that urge to punch a few people in the liver.
Thank you hero!
Minas Gerais is where my friends are from and when I visited I was OBSESSED with the native flaura. Its a truly beautiful place
That commercial was great. Oh and the Latin was great also.
Oh cool, scarlet begonias and a touch of the blues
After watching all these close-up videos of yours, Tony, I'm becoming pretty familiar with your fingerprint patterns. It could prove quite valuable to my career as a burglar!
I never thought that I would hope for more ads! 😅
I could watch your adverts all day long.
I gotta got on the birch livin'
Al’s ad reads are my fucking favorite.
Goddamnit, these Brazilian dryland videos are blowing my mind
That was really interesting. Lots of diversity, but also so alien and different from what we see in temperate climates or suburban gardens.
You're the only person who can tell me to go f- myself at the end of every video, and i don't feel offended lol
And Bill Burr
@@lemonyskunkketts7781 sadly I have no idea who that is, but I'll go check him out.
Those hairy foxglove looks flowers with the trichromes looked so beautiful 🥲
Hairified penstemons
I like staying at Best Westerns, where you can back up to the door of the room.
I need me some desert begonias
My begonias got torched here in Texas, I just moved them into the shade begrudgingly, I think they'll make a good comeback
This is a great field trip. How this guy keeps so much in his mind is incredible.
I'm terrible on names overall but I've been around a lot of world class botanists. There are not many that have either the knowledge or the overall resources to give such an excellent tour.
Thanks for such informative information. I've learned by each of your videos.🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙
If your planning any Big Island trip, let me know. I have access to a few premier places here.
I'd be so happy if Huntington Gardens or some other such organization manages to bring Wunderlichia into cultivation. I'd definitely like to grow one in my collection
Fascinating! Id love to spend the day with you geeking out about plants
WHAT IS THE BEGINNING OF THIS VIDEO LMFAO 💀
Bro, I'd watch every commercial if they were like this. 😂
"Welcome to everything glandular, how can I help you?"
For me the Begonia was the highlight.
Incredible and valuable as always! Thank you for documenting and sharing these amazing ecosystems. I always hope your videos reach people local to the area and help open their eyes to the world around them. Best wishes from Ohio where we replace our habitats with GMO corn monocultures bathed in glyphosate or (gag) suburbs!
Another great video, thanks.
Thanks big T
If I ran a university, I'd offer this guy whatever he wanted to conduct field botany courses and conservation programs.
Thumbs up, just for the Birch mattress ad! Your content always deserves 👍👍
Looks twice the size of my mattress! When I get a place of my own when I can afford it for sure! Eco friendly mattress I didn't know existed!
Thanks for this one Joey.
i can't believe you came right up to my doorstep to watch some plants, very cool, hope you liked the country boss
I love your friend!
Great line--lol! "I mean, granted, I'm not a begonia guy, but still, it's pretty cool."
Angelonia has become a popular annual for SE gardeners. Lots of breeding going on with it for the ever expanding & lucrative landscape sector.
Every time I think you've shown us the wildest plants, you find more! Some incredible stuff Joey, sincere thanks.

If there is two things in life that I can't get enough of it's advertisements narrated by Al & quaaludes
Blue means there's sharks in it!
At a truck stop they are called lot lizards.
Al to Joey and the rest of us: "Hey freak show! You're going nowhere. I got you for [two] minutes. [Two] minutes of PLAYTIME!"
Do his ad spots and intro videos hit your inbox out of thin air? Whatever your system is, it's working, keep it up.
Love the plants and nature too, especially when rough days of fatigue and migraines hit me out of nowhere. Or when I have to shut the windows and put on headphones because somebody starts mowing or chainsawing or jackhammering.
Apparently wunderlichia is wind pollinated
Love your work! Dive into the lichen !
Best videos on the internet
Thanks for the sleep focused Scorch content
This is psychology at its highest level: Make the advertisement look like the rival company paid you to make the actual, promoted company look bad. Viewers realize that and instantly root for the "underdog", the good guy. Because if an evil, rival company pays for embarrassing fake advertisement, birch HAS TO be great. Poor mans logic but I assume it works and Birch Living makes billions. Each minute!!!
Fabulous 😍
This channel is so awesome!
Omg that ad read 🤣🤣🤣

i could listen to you call things "glandular" for hours
Sweet. covered some Turnera.
Bulbophyllum is my favorite orchid genus. but I also like the miniture ones the ... Lepto... somethings. They have tiny flowers that grow right on the leaf. What are those flowers for?
Can someone send you to a rainforest please.

what does glandular in that context mean? covered in trichomes?
Covered in glands. Generally sticky
I'm tempted to get a new Birch. Good thing is if it doesn't work out, I don't need to debate the Birch. Just picks up the phone and they remove the Birch from my residence. Does it come in jaded?
That's right the guys just come over and slap us around, wrap it up and take it back no questions axed.
