    Something to add onto Simon's lack of hope I noticed too: it's implied his post-wish demeanor is new, as the rest of the friend group mention how he hasn't been the same since making his wish, which implies him wanting to be such a great knight was so much of his old personality that he's a shell of his former self without it, which i think accentuates the idea that Magnifico has complete control over the people of Rosas

    • @donnguyen1107
      @donnguyen1107 Месяц назад +2

      I also notice some of the citizens that have ungranted wishes also show some of Simon's droopy tiredness or are kind of aimlessly going about their day like the girl with the birds who wants to fly, the man who wants to climb a mountain who's just sitting there somberly reading a book, the woman who wants to sail just sweeping away, or the bags in this one man in the crowd with a family wish who suggested another ceremony, which is kinda the only method they've known on seeing anybody's wish safe.

  • @donnguyen1107
    @donnguyen1107 4 месяца назад +7

    Asha even suggests just giving the wishes back if Magnifico won't grant them. She does know some wishes can be dangerous and should be tamed and refined, but giving them back to the people doesn't automatically make them come true but allows them the chance to either pursue them themselves and/or stop and consider their methods and if they should be pursuing them. "If they're dangerous, then they can be stopped"
    And at the beginning we see Asha thinking Magnifico grants the wishes of the "good and worthy" but turns out only grants those based on utility and their function towards his kingdom rather than the individual person. Becoming fairy godmother at the end, now Asha can provide just a little help and magic for the wishes of people based on true character and experiences (ie good Geppetto who brings joy to others and wishes Pinocchio as a living son or kindhearted Cinderella who's abused by her stepfamily etc)

    • @ReeseGreyAnalyzes

    Also furthermore people comment on Asha as fairy godmother “taking Magnifico’s job” to grant wishes willy nilly, but that’s not the case. The creators even say “the fairy godmothers can give you the dress turn the pumpkin into the coach but they’re not going to make the prince fall in love with you” or make your evil stepfamily go away. The fairy godmothers give you the tools and gifts that can help you on your journey and figure out your dreams yourself and pick you up when you’re down free of charge and out of genuine love and looking for and reminding you of the good in you.
    Furthermore there are evil versions of this in people like Ursula, Maleficent, Dr Facilier and Magnifico where they offer your heart’s desire completely fulfilled but there’s a catch and ulterior motives or basically become your greatest adversary towards your destiny or dreams.
    And just like how Snow White’s
    good, strong, selfless heart is what makes her worthy as fairest one of all over the evil queen, Asha’s love for her family and community and understanding of dreams and struggles is what makes her worthy to begin a journey as a fairy godmother over king Magnifico.

    Talking about Simon in the book Recipe for Adventure and other written works it’s stated before he gave up his wish he was a gentle giant and passionate horse rider who cared about using his strength to help others and as his wish was to be the most valiant and loyal knight, or effectively the chivalrous knight of fairytales, Magnifico twists that wish by using the dark magic to make him a super soldier loyal only to him and essentially under his mind control

    This is incredibly well made! 😁 I love the way you frame your argument in a clear and concise way, whilst also taking the film within context unlike so many of its critics. I always appreciate finding people who agree with the idea of Magnifico being a villain who clearly is running an authoritarian regime and commodifying people’s greatest desires. I did an analysis both on fan perception and at all costs, and I looked at the way the song utilizes itself to show both Asha and Magnifico’s perspective (typically we tend to see the visuals of wishes in fleeting bursts or even not at all from Magnifico’s view as he moves them around in patterns like wealth, whereas with Asha we see full potential of a wish realized and the beauty it holds). I love the way your argument is done, your video deserves so much more attention and I hope more people who love this movie like I do find their way here! 😊💛

    THANK YOU. I truly love themes that Wish explores - corruptive force of power, mentality of a crowd and politics in general. Andanimation is actually great, a solid try in new style between 2D and 3D.
    I also started to kinda.... appreciate the fact that Wish is far from perfect, but it's constructive parts are so great (as I've said, themes, characters, beauty of design, ideas in general, those that were scrapped and that ended up in final movie) that they inspire people to do something with them. Interesting considering how Asha’s Saba’s wish isn’t just any ordinary wish but it’s his identity as a musician and music is meant to inspire such things as joy, hope and dreams and help people through their emotions and Magnifico is essentially hoarding such an art and the fact that in our reality society, especially in fascism bans a lot of books and songs or music styles when they’re inspiring people somehow or appear to be a political threat

    Funny thing when I brought up the wish-granting system to my dad and how everyone is ignorantly happy living without any memories of their dreams or desires and essentially made homogenous he told me it's essentially communism, which is what my family was running away from. Communism does level out people equally wealth and status-wise so there's an equality among the people, but it still gives power to a central government with full authority and that also begs the question of what are you doing to well-to-do/wealthy citizens who've done nothing wrong and remain good people who serve the community etc. Furthermore it leaves little opportunity for people to step up in life or fulfill certain dreams. I've heard in extreme cases they'll cut off your property if you own even an acre of land or a little more. This time everyone is equally without dreams or fulfillment because they've given them away based on Rosas' narrative while Magnifico is gaining more wishes than he grants by the year and thus are restricted from stepping up with their lives themselves, while Magnifico only grants those based on utility to his kingdom rather than the person's character or experiences.

    Speaking of religion, King Magnifico is VERY applicable to a cult leader.
    He isolated a group of people to follow his belief of what's good for them. And when a being that is more powerful than him comes to Rosas, he feels threatened by their arrival as if they'll expose him and take away his authority.

    • @ReeseGreyAnalyzes
      @ReeseGreyAnalyzes  2 месяца назад +1

      Ooh absolutely. King Magnifico definitely gives cult leader vibes, 100%

    • @donnguyen1107
      @donnguyen1107 2 месяца назад +2

      And as mentioned with hunchback, Magnifico is basically Frollo but with magic and authority rather than real life religion, or Mother Gothel with gaslighting people that they can only depend on him

    • @donnguyen1107
      @donnguyen1107 2 месяца назад +1

      Also I can see a similar concept with Satan/Lucifer in Magnifico, wherein he held a position of power and authority and was loved by his fellows, but it clearly goes to his head and ultimately he wanted everything controlled with no challenges, lacking the humility to consider there are powers and others greater than him and he may not be as perfect as he makes himself out to be, which led to him choosing dark magic and amplifying his own darkness and making a devilish deal that turns Simon into a mind-controlled soldier.
      There's also a similar concept with Maleficent, literally having powers of hell, her satanic design, her demonic minions etc.
      Or like Frollo in hunchback he acts and views himself as a divine favorite but that leads to his gaslighting and narcissism which becomes his downfall.
      Note: while nowadays people consider the pentagram star shows with the yarn as a satanic/occult symbol, historically the pentagram star was actually a christian symbol associated with the five wounds of Jesus christ, five joys of Mary, five senses etc. and was used to WARD OFF or TRAP evil rather than summon evil.

    • @donnguyen1107
      @donnguyen1107 Месяц назад +1

      Also I was revisiting some Bible stories and what goes on with Magnifico is actually akin to King Saul in the story of David. Once a beloved king, but his people's praise and the power goes to his head and his practices and refusal to face changes or his flaws brings out his darkness to the point that even his own family can't bring him back. The initial light is like a sign that because he tried to play god and taps at the very agency of people, he no longer deserves to reign nor has the power.

    Can it really be called fascism if there isn't a military component to the regime's equation? Magnifico didn't seize power through a military coup or created a regime turned towards nationalism and forcefully enforced by the military regime.

    • @ReeseGreyAnalyzes
      @ReeseGreyAnalyzes  7 месяцев назад +2

      That's a REALLY good point! In real life, I do believe militarism is needed and the population reveres/respects/fears the military in fascism. Before anyone says he's under the influence of dark magic, he was kinda already on that slope when he studied and harnessed magic all those years to begin with and in the disney universe, there are rules with magic in humans as defying natural order like life and death or human thought, emotions or desires. Getting people to give away their dreams and desires to you and making them forget them already crosses that magic line. The forbidden magic with all the magic he already has is basically the ultimate drug and in the end the magic mirror is where he needs to be to sober up after being drunk on all that magic.

      He essentially cajoles to the two new citizens at the beginning "you're going to be very happy here i promise you" before he says to make a wish and thus the wishes are extracted and the two no longer remember their wish and they're just staring in the crowd almost numb and unsure as someone goes "Forget without regret!" and one has her hand to her heart like there's just a void there like "ok i guess i should be happy now?". It's painless but it can also appear like you just took some numbing/antidepressants and hollowed yourself out. Also he says "it's a real weight off" but anyone in a gym or otherwise and even past stories will tell you weight gives and tests your strength.
      Plus completely erasing your own memories in most any form isn't exactly healthy to begin with.
      I notice similarities between this and the lotus eaters in the Odyssey where eating the lotus makes you "forget your worries" but it also makes you forget everything else in your life including your goals, dreams, home and family so you're just in a numb, ignorantly happy, doped up high stupor which of course Odysseus just turns down and focuses on getting to his family.
