    I had the exact same experience when trying to use a frameless backpack! The comfort and weight transfer of the framed backpack is so much better. I also find them slightly easier to pack since and don't have to worry as much about clumps or items protruding into your back.

    I used to cold soak, then dehydrated my own and went with a jet boil for a few years.
    For me the routine ritual of reheating food became a chore and a bore. I've been carnivore for about a year and have adopted a Spartan outlook on food. So now it's just mainly jerky to nibble on throughout the day, then a protein shake at different times and a protein bar at the end of the day. It works for me. I carry 3kg of food, which is enough for ten days, doing about 25kilometres a day. I still bring food back somehow.

    For me, it's trail runners. I want to like them! Love them for short dayhikes and for trailrunning, but I absolutely tore my feet up on my last week+ trip and am back to boots after trying numerous lacing methods, different sock combos...there was only one brand that fit me I could find and loads of people love the LonePeaks, but I swapped back to my Lowa Renegades and couldn't be happier. Well, I do miss one thing - the thin fabric gaiters are so nice for just keeping schmoo out when I don't need full on knee high snow gaiters.

    I picked up a budget 30L fastpack for ultralight fastpacking/backpacking. Running vest shoulders straps are great. I like how it transfers the weight to my core instead of all on my shoulders. When the load is around 25lbs I'll switch back to the framed pack.

    Lol the cold soaking thing is just odd. There's a popular RUclipsr that once stated he doesn't eat to enjoy the food, he just eats to replenish calories. I was like, "How and why are you alive?" lol That was the most robotic answer to "why do you cold soak" I've ever heard. I'm with you, having a hot meal is just good for the soul. In the UK, my hikes most often consist of one or at a push two nights out. For at least the first night, I carry home cooked meals that have been frozen in mylar bags and simply reheat those and I never leave home without a (small softcover) book to read.
    Strange how I was mocked for having those comforts as they were "way too heavy" by the guy who sat in his chair, drank two beers, and had to carry an extra 300g of water for his "lightweight" dehydrated meal.
    The trend that makes no sense is they weight being all important but only when judging others.

    I also haven't tried cold soaking yet. But, I'm thinking I might do so this summer. I backpack in pretty hot, humid conditions. And, even out west there are hot days where a hot meal just isn't all that appealing. The tough part is knowing when a cold soak meal will be great, and when it will be raining and cold, and you'll wish you had a warm meal with you. The solution? Bring a meal that can be coal soaked or made hot by adding boiling water. Couscous comes to mind.

    • @MattyOutdoors
      @MattyOutdoors  Месяц назад +2

      If I'm planning on hot days, I'll often take some flavored tuna, and pitas, or crackers. sometimes I'll pack cheese, and do that with crackers and some peperoni or something. But usually I still have a dehydrated meal. Most of the time, I'm eating my own home made spaghetti.

    • @SupermanJimbo
      @SupermanJimbo Месяц назад

      This. I think the term ‘cold-soaking’ is what makes it unappealing. When it’s hot out you want as light a pack as possible and hot meals can take forever to cool down and aren’t appealing either. As long as it’s not a noodle dish cold soaking is exactly the same as with hot water, just it’s the same temp as the hot air.
      Also for long hikes it’s nice to roll into camp and have your meal ready to go!
      NOTE: you need less water when cold soaking. Unless you like watery soup.

    A voice of reason IMO. There are so many RUclipsrs now who talk about all the stuff you just have to have to go backpacking - chairs, pillows, extremely war, pads and a pack for all occasions. I don't have problem carrying 10 pounds without a hip belt, but then I'd need another pack in the winter or if I need to carry food for a week. I don't deny that many types of gear might increase comfort on the trail, but the problem is that it's presented as necessary when you'll do just fine without.

While I was amazed at my new tent (under 2 pounds and way way lighter than I had) but this pillow thing I don’t understand. My guess is my generation coddled the next generation to much. I did buy a pillow for some reason but I only used it like once or twice. A stuff sack with clothes is what I always used if anything and that is all I need.

      Coddling has nothing to do with it. I was rear ended at 70mph while sitting in traffic. My Nemo Fillo will always be in my pack. Plenty of people have various injuries that make certain gear necessary to maintain functionality. Even if they just want to be a little more comfortable, that's hardly a reason to shit on people for it. I'm at the bottom of Gen X and all for shitting on younger generations in certain areas, but making things more uncomfortable just to passive aggressively brag about being tough is just stupid.

    Solar panels to hang on the backpack (a powerbank is more relyable)
    First aid Kit from stores (it always miss the things the things i need on trails, to make My own first aid Kit is better for me)
    Things for making the best cup of coffee( someone invented instant coffee)
    Hikingfootwear that are not shaped for the foot ( just how are you supposed to be walking long distanced with something like that?)

      Chairs are a hill I'll die on! If I were 25 and blasting out 20+ mile days, I'd leave it home. I'm 55 and enjoy camp time just as much as trail time. The comfort it provides is well worth the 16 ounces. And when my butt isn't in it, my pack is (I hammock, so the chair keeps it off the ground). To each their own!
      I agree with you on the coffee! There are some decent instants out there (but I'm sure that's a hill someone else will die on!)

      Instant coffee doesn't compare to a pour over, or press coffee.. Those are worth the weight, IMO, if you like coffee.
