    Roy manages to help his students reach their absolute limits in these demos/tests but also understands when to dial it back and allow them to continue progressing as the situation dictates. He knows they're already exhausted by the end yet he still allows for them to fight and give everything they have. It's what makes these belt promotions so beautiful to watch and I'm sure so rewarding to accomplish as a student.

    Roy Dean is similar to a conductor of a major orchestra. Joshua Matanane, the featured musician of the evening. The duel between conductor and lead musician starts from the moment Josh opens his demo with Sean. The crescendo escalates with every opponent, until everyone else is silenced with the pinnacle of the dual: Josh vs Roy. A symphony of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Congratulations!

I just wanted to say Hafa Adai and awesome work Joshua. I know the journey my daughters and I just started the Jiu Jitsu journey. It's tough that you have to spar with your three stripe blackbelt instructor LAST, after you're exhausted and he's fresh and ready to crush you. Hah. I guess it's a test in adversity. Great video!

    • @ctsd623
      @ctsd623 4 года назад +24

      But he's probably the one you want to spar last, cos he best knows how to apply juuust the right amount of pressure to push you to the limit without injury. There's an inverse correlation between the opponent's belt rank and the likelihood they're going to injure you. (Assuming the higher rank doesn't have a reason to be a dick)

      Não espere mais amigo. Eu estava longe da arte suave por mais de 15 anos e voltei a treinar depois dos quarenta também, acompanhando meu filho, que também treina desde os 3 anos, hoje aos sete.
      Quanto ao medo, isso é normal, todos sentimos, seu maior adversário é vc mesmo. Treine duro, foque, seja de ouvidos e olhos dedicados em aprender.
      O kimono vc pode encontrar mais em conta por exemplo na olx, e existem muitas entidades com trabalhos sociais onde vc nem paga para treinar ou paga o que pode.
      Não deixe que pequenas coisas impeçam seu crescimento na arte suave, pois não é só o tatame, jiujitsu é algo que se levado a sério, nos aprimora pra vida.

    Can really see the different approach Roy Dean takes. At my academy we never work on mastering the movements properly. Watched some of our guys drilling a long step pass the other week and half of the guys just couldn't actually do the long step movement. They clearly needed some kind of drill or exercise to get the basic movement down and we don't go beyond the forward roll, the hip escape, the technical stand up and the sit out. Looking at Roy's students it looks like they really focus on form and correct movement. I think I would have to go back to blue belt at his academy ( from purple ).
    There are also some great techniques in the video. I am going to have to go through it in slow motion and steal some ideas. I saw some things that I actually do but haven't been taught.
