Erica said that she expected to be "inspirational" to other amputees but not the rest of us. Well, to me, people who wrestle with and overcome any kind of unusual adversity are worth learning about...more about their attitude that the actual physical part....becaue adversity of various kinds can happen to any of us any time. The fact that Erica can find normalcy in her life is the ultimate victory over adversity.

What an amazing lady! Very reassuring to the rest of us who came out complete physically, but emotionally have our difficulties dealing with such disabilities. Thank you for being so open and relaxed talking about your new life.

I know this is probably one of the smallest problems you have, but you can use the negative lead on a battery to control the iPhone screen. It's also really amazing to see a quadruple amputee living a normal life.

    What happened to her

+Istayuplatedrivefast Meningitis. Virtually every time you see a quad amputee with DBK/DBE then it's due to Meningitis.
I'm a DBK amputee (due to combat, 12 years in Special Forces). I have super high amputations (about 3.5" stumps) and after revision surgeries I now have no fibulae; so I use more energy per leg than an AK amputee (especially as they can now have the computerized knees). I have nerve pain that is off the charts, I've done a bunch of pain studies and my "level 1" of pain is roughly equal to most people's "level 6-7"... considered to be 20 times greater than child birth. I've been shot and that doesn't even come close. So I can imagine how much energy and effort it would require to operate with no hands in addition to the leg amputations, plus deal with the pain. As DBK amputees, we can't just take of one leg and hop or crutch around.
I've seen her a few times as we both go to RIC at Northwestern which is the top prosthetics facility in the US. We also both have the same prosthetician (who is also an amputee - AK, and that's a huge help as they understand much more than a normal prosthetist. I've also seen her at various events (CAF, 5k/10k races, etc.).
I run marathons, Ironman, climb, sail, surf, race road/mountain/triathlon, I've completed the RAAM (world's most difficult bike race - makes the Tour de France look like a joke). I'm a pilot, I;ve raced the Baja 1000, I skydive, I do Mushing and Skijor with my Huskies, I'm a world champion competition shooter, scuba diver, and much more.
She has a great attitude, impressive resilience.
