I'm a few months into my saxophone journey. (key board, trumpet and French Horn experience) In the sax world, I have never played anything other than a baritone. I guess Lisa Simpson isn't the only one.

about 9 years since I started playing sax again (after a 7 year hiatus) and I use my YTS 23 Tenor for everything and has not let me down.

i've been playing a used jean baptiste from Sam Ash for 7 years. It cost me $200, and still plays very well. I also have been using jean baptiste 2.5 reeds since I started playing. Only ever had 1 non-functional reed ever.

Great video! I just started learning to play the alto sax and knowing exactly what need and don't need, will help me focus more on my technique rather than gear!

I have a Jazzlabs Saxholder and it is the best type of harness/strap I could have used. It doesn't put pressure on your neck like a normal neck strap which can put puressure on your arms potentially. I have slight back problems and it really helped take the weight of my back when playing my alto sax. The only issue with the original one I had was that when I sat down or stood up, I'd have to adjust ot or if I leaned over the legs of the shoulder area would come out from the holder and I'd have to reposition it and click it back into place, but beside those minor issues, its worth it. Not sure if the newer one fixes these issues or not.
I have a Hercules stand and my only issue is that the saxophone can move around in it and my Yamaha YAS-280 fell off the stand as I didn't attach it 100% and it swung round and fell over. I have a k&m saxophone stand that I got for a curved soprano but it can fit an alto or tenor sax as well and the saxophone will not move when it is adjusted.

I like this straight-to-the-point advice. I’m inspired to play again, after years… of absence from my church band…

Thanks for keeping it real and pointing out affordable options. When you're just starting out, expensive equipment can be a real dealbreaker. This helped a lot. Although I have 2 questions: What about cork grease and mouthpiece cushions?

Awesome video. Love your videos, was thinking of getting a tenor sax to learn on but I think an alto would be more manageable and easier to transport. I would think a must have would be a case and a stand, also a neck strap.

Great video, have you ever thought about doing a review of the Yamaha CM (Custom series)? I cant seem to find any info about them on YT.

Would love to! If only Yamaha could send me one 😅 although there are quite a few videos on RUclips about the Yamaha custom series from what I can see.. I’ve never heard of the CM though?

It appears ClearTune has been pulled from Android App Store. Even the link from their own website to the playstore is now dead.

A question...... Isn't it better to clean a sax starting at the bell end? Starting at the neck spreads the most contaminated area throughout the sax to the bell. Cleaning should be low to high.
Also starting at the neck with a bar would be cumbersome as well. Your thoughts?
