Just bought the DSL40c today brand new and it sounds great. All the people saying these sound like crap must be judging it from just this video and using lower quality headphones, you have to remember that RUclips compresses all these videos so what you listen to on here and what you hear in person actually playing the amp are most of the time completely different
***** I own one and think it's a fantastic amp as well. Since I like the Marshall sound more than the Fender sound, I think its the best sub-$1k amp out there. If you haven't already, clip the C19 cap in channel 2, and replace the speaker with a Celestion Creamback... drool-inducing tone
I put a old stock GE 12ax7WA in the v2 for warmth and a Tungsol in the v1,v3 JJ803 added a little low end and a Slyvania in the PI v4 almost 30 hrs on the speaker, lead1 and lead 2 sound really good. Lead 2 gain around half and the bass at 5 works well. Still prb change the speaker maybe in the future.
I have actually since sold my DSL40c a couple months back because I wanted to go a completely different route than the typical Gibson + Marshall combo to try and get my own sound. Recently purchased a Blackstar Ht5th and a Fender Telecaster, and they both work great especially the amp, would definitely recommend Blackstar products. I still love the sound of that Marshall though and if I see a used one up for sale I may just have to purchase it.
@Madam Murdrum did you try replacing the Celestion Seventy80? They're garbage speakers. I put a Vintage 30 in mine and replaced the tubes and properly biased it and it sounds amazing!
I just picked up a new DSL40C from Guitar Center today. Paired it up with my '88 Charvel 1C HSS (Japan) and it sounds SOOO good through this amp! Marshall indeed did a great job with this one. This video just solidified my purchase and makes me proud to own one. Good job Marshall and thank you Rob/Andertons for providing such an awesome rundown on these amps.
I got a DSL-15C on the way. I played one of these about nine months ago. I used it in a Sam Ash to try out a 2010 Standard Plus, which I purchased. On the clean channel it was just another pretty guitar but, when I played it in the distortion channel wow! I could not get the sound of this amp out of my head, so I just picked one up. I'm a musical hobbyist who owns many great amps besides this one.
Wish I knew that yesterday when I switched between pentode triode power scaling without turning the amp off on my DSL 40 combo and DSL 15 head while power was on and running !?!?!!🤷🏻♀️ no failures on either amps but damn that's scary I've done that a couple times now knowing.
Just got the 40c. Exceededs all expectations. I have no problems with shrillness/harshness or fizz. Love the old DSL100 but wasn't practical for me so went for this over an old 401- more than happy that I did - resonance control is excellent, sounds (particularly clean and OD1, but also the others) are really great, responsive and musical. Extremely happy buyer!
Chappers knows his Canadian stuff! K.D. Lang. Brian Adams. Btw, I've been using a 40c with a killer sounding 212 extension cab and and it is such an inspiring sounding little rig. Great video fellas!!
I use the DSL15H with a 212 cab loaded with UK made vintage 30s. Straight out of the box this amp has become a mainstay in my rig. I know some guys are doing some great mods to this amp but, outside of the ridiculous amount of gain it really is fantastic in the bang for the buck category. With a few good pedals there's not much you can't get out of it.:)
great little amps!! I played one 2 days ago and couldn't believe how great these little babies are for the money, I came back today and purchase the Head. I have massive amps and a 5150 iii but this little guy is easy on the back and can be paired with any cabinet. Well done Marshall
Hey, Listen!!! How is "good P90s" redundant. You can have shitty badly voiced P90 made with pop can metal wound by a blind monkey or a well voiced, well produced quality P90 made by a pro. Just like any other pickup.
I have the 40c and love it, I did swap the speaker with a cream back and found it warmer and less ice picky on the highs. Sounds better then my other more expensive amps.
Only thing I wish we could switch between clean and crunch and lead 1 and 2 on the foot pedal too. What's your more expensive amp that u prefer the DSL over? Just curious
Nice. I have the DSL 40 and like it a lot. But a thinking about getting a Mesa Mark 5 35 too as I'm looking for the best possible tones for my home studio. Have you tried Mesa Mark 5 at all?
I personally haven't tried one, but I have a friend that was really impressed with the Mark 5, that he ordered one immediately after trying out in a store. He loved the versatility and the clean channel.
the bass breaker has a better clean high quality sound mostly for jazz blues and that kind of stuff while this is for hard rock/rock/blues... has better tone...

this is definitely a 'budget' series, as far as tube amps go. they wouldnt be able to keep the price point if it wasnt made, en masse, in cheap-labor factories (low- wage law countries)
@@zhou_sei The quality of amplifiers made in Vietnam is probably much higher than British made ones. I still remember my British made Ford Mondeo. What a disaster.
best review you guys have ever done, actually playing guitars/amps in the same range and music people are looking to play . but give the captain the guitar more often
+Matthew Hedges Thanks, but I don't want to deny people the right to earn money for their work, but at the same time, there should be a measure of reasonability to how they disrupt our experience.
Love you guys! YOu make every demo/review enjoyable and informative. I just picked up a DSL 40C and it was because of this demo. Thanks guys! You rock!
+Anthony Galbo One time I ran a Big Muff with a Boss Distortion pedal (Big Muff for gain, Boss for a Tube Screamer style mid boost) into a Fender Twin Reverb 60 with a heavy mid scoop (Bass dimed, Mids at 10:00, and Treble at 2:00) in drop A and it sounded beastly.
So far I've had the DSL15c and I currently have the HT Club 40, and the Blackstar wins for me. And I've played a Hot Rod Deluxe but I'm not sure which of the two is better.
i noticed you played some bryan adams there. please understand that bryan adams is not from the usa, he's from Canada, and Canada has apologized many many times for this.
Couldn't have picked a better video for the 1000th than the DSL! Personally, the best amp I've ever heard. As soon as I have the money then I'm getting the 40C
With all due respect for Chappers and the Captain, I don't believe that the Les Paul used for this video is making justice to these Marshall amplifiers.
You're right, it is a do all amp and the price cant be beat. Too bad they're not UK made though for the extra reliability. I heard they end up in the shop too often with electronics frying out etc. Then again you got Gary Holt from slayer using these live so idk, I suppose once the bugs are worked out. Very tempting at that price.
I just got the 15H for Christmas, and am running into an AVT 4x12A, and love the classic gain channel....doing Allman Brothers,ZZTOP,SRV, and running this in stero with a super reverb. Unreal tones!
depends..if its 15 watt from a tube amp, then yes, so loud in fact you could easily small-gig it...now, 15 transistor/digital watts? not really loud and punchy enough for anything other then practicing only...enough to maybe keep up with a very soft drummer in a very small room..
Pe Peroni I currently own a Roland 40GX, and I really want to switch to a tube amp. Would the 15c be able to surpass the 40gx volume wise? Also is it worth it to just fork over the extra 100$ and get the 40c? Thanks
FreshBagelz 15w tube and 40w transistor are somewhat comparable, but since the 40gx has a relative small cabinet and a smaller 10 inch speaker, and the cabinet from the 15c isnt only bigger but its loaded with a 12inch speaker, the 15c will def move quite a lot more air then the gx..also remember the fact that its not only about volume and moving air, its also about articulation..transistor amps articulate the better the lower you turn it down, tubes are the opposite, the higher you cranck it up the better it gets and the better it responds ands sounds...unfortunately the best advice i can give you is to test one out, which is what everyone else would say...about the 40c..well, yes its def going to be louder, but then remember what i said about articulation...if the tube amp is too powerfull it might not work for smaller applications like practicing or smaller gigs, since you have to cranck it up to get a good tone out of it, but then 40 tube watts crancked up is pretty damn loud..
-I'm gonna be perfectly honest: I have the 15w version and the switch hardly makes a difference; it's still pretty loud for bedroom practice (unless you use an attenuator). -It definitely should. As I said, I have the 15w version, and it's plenty loud, so it should definitely cut through in a band (if necessary though, I'd try running it through a 2x12 or a 4x12 cabinet to boost it). If you are in a serious band though, I'd probably pay the additional $100 and spring for the 40w version, but the 15w is definitely a worthy amp too.
Wild-Will The 40w is technically better because it has the Boost buttons for each channel, a Resonance knob instead of a switch, different reverbs for each channel, and an FX Loop. Though the 15w will work, I'd definitely get the 40w version if you're in a serious band.
Wild-Will Here's the thing: it depends on what you're doing with it... For example, I play an American Standard Strat and stay mostly on the clean/crunch channels. I like keeping it in 40 watt mode for clean playing because it allows for louder volume before breakup starts occurring (more headroom). I like having this increased headroom for playing in a band setting as it allows me to stay cleaner at higher volumes. However, if you're playing mostly distorted stuff, the 20 watt setting helps it break up much earlier, although there really isn't much of a perceptible volume difference between 20 watts and 40 watts, maybe a couple db difference. If you're going to be playing mostly at home and at lower volumes and more distorted stuff, the 15 watt combo/head versions will allow you to get the tubes cooking at slightly lower volumes than even the 20 watt setting on the DSL40C, but you won't have as much headroom for clean or slightly overdriven stuff. Also, the 15 watt versions use tubes that sound more american. Marshall has made them sound like a Marshall, of course, but you'll experience slightly stiffer bottom end, slightly more scooped mids, more round highs, and you'll lose some of that chewiness that comes with british tubes. I hope this makes sense.
Guitarnivor .... And, in a musical world dominated by the latest and greatest; the Kemper is one more thing I don't need that I'd love to buy. Let's face it, most of this tech isn't needed, even for tone snobs like myself. Chappers uses the rationalization that the Kemper will make his touring life so much easier and cheaper, instead of hauling tons of gear while on tour. So let's negate that he's not making this argument for the sole purpose of selling gear. Logically the Kemper makes sense; however, I would counter that a experienced musician like Chappers doesn't "need" to haul a ton of gear while touring. He like many others just wants options, but in all reality all we need is a quality head, some pedals and a couple guitars. I've been around this game long enough to recognize marketing over necessity. Regardless, if you got another 3 grand for a Kemper and cab, by all means indulge yourself. And in a few years you will see another thing that will cost thousands that you "need" to buy. My point is, when will the proverbial musical masses decide we have enough tech, so let's just focus on making music. \m/
Night Beard You're overthinking this in my opinion. There is never too much gear if the market is still demanding it. There is no "needed" gear at all, only wanted gear, gear is not necessary to survival. It's a supply and demand system, the consumer demands the products that they like from the free market, manufacturers must supply a product for the demand made by the potential cliental. Multiple companies compete to have their product be the most demanded, so innovation to appease the market is needed to stay competitive. When you say an artist doesn't need to haul around a lot of gear, you're also wrong in some cases. A band or artist needs to haul around as much gear as will give them their sound and will give the audience the sound they came for. You don't go to a gig with a Pathfinder 15 and a traveler guitar if it sounds nothing like the gear you wrote the songs on. You bring all the shit that makes your sound. The Kemper basically perfectly emulates multiple amps and does stellar cab simulation. So I agree that's a great rational to get one so you don't ruin your back and wallet. A byproduct of the convenience of that product is that it's appealing to a certain group of musicians. The product targets a demographic that wants that type of thing. The musical masses will never have enough tech, new stuff has new sonic qualities and new sonic qualities means the potential for new music.
Guitarnivor We both agree the Kemper is a cool piece of gear. Were I disagree is the "masses" aren't signed touring artist on a major label. If you've played as many places as I have, you would know that most, if not all venues, will never be able to sound like recording studios. Let's be realistic here and not argue semantics. If you've been to a professional performance they may have sounded great, but I assure you with all the venues we play, the venues will never be the same acoustically, nor will they come close to a studio performance. Regardless, most of the audience is acoustically ignorant and would never be able to discern the nuances between quality amp modelers, let alone amps and cabs in a live performance setting. When I plug in my Elevenrack or POD HD500x to a house PA or my PA, none of my audience walks away thinking they wish I would've used my Mega Boogie or went out and bought a Kemper. If anyone says otherwise, they are not experienced musicians or lying to themselves.
Night Beard You're working off of your own suppositions here and not addressing any of my actual points. So I guess you're talking about something completely different.
I have been playing guitar though my 40 watt transistor amp for five years and never had issues from neighbours concerning the noise. 2 days ago i bought the dsl15h with a 1x12 and today I already had angry people at my doorstep lol. This thing is crazy loud. People complain about these amps being fizzy, but if you play loud enough and you know how to dial them they really pack a punch and give you tons of tone for the money.
Why are so many guitar snobs so hung up over where stuff is made?! In a blind test, 9/10 wouldn't be able to tell at all. It seems that if a guitar isn't made in America, it must be shit and if something is made in the Far East, it must be 'cheap shit'! This just isn't the case. Yes, some some stuff from China or Vietnam etc is garbage, but not everything. People need to learn to play with their ears and not their eyes!
Chris Toft it is well known and very clear to experienced players that American guitar manufacturing is superior. At least in the big brands. Gibson USA's are phenomenal compared to the Indonesian Epiphone counterpart (although even then they're pretty damn close). Mexican Strats have nothing on an OG Corona CA Strat. Guitars from overseas are made in mass production factories. Everything is standardized and mostly machine handled in foreign factories, enabling cheaper prices for Epiphones and such. Handmade guitars from the states here have a human touch and have individual personality. Can't beat it.
Christian Sagredo Yeah I understand, I'm a professional musician and I have several USA made Gibsons, all of which I love. But I also have a few Mexican made EVH guitar which sound, feel and look as good as their American counterparts but for a fraction of the price. I just feel that if people worried more about playing and less about where the stuff comes from, they'd be better players! Any top guitarist can make cheap gear sound good. It's mostly in the fingers and ears...not the geographic location!
I myself play a Korean Made LTD and it's a fantastic guitar, only real problem is the improper grounding which makes my Marshall hum and buzz other than that it rocks almost as well as any American made guitar I've ever played
All this time I've been searching for the perfect amp, avoiding Marshalls because of the high-gain tones I had heard out of them in the past, and now I come back to this video, listen to the DSL40C and think "That's the one! Goddammit that's the one!"
I bought a DSL40C online at Sam Ash with $100 off special they were running about 3 weeks ago..On-Line Tax Free. Im playin it in stereo with a Peavy5150 combo. With this combination of clean channels, overdrive and crunch the Peavy 5150C and the Marshalldsl40C give me all the tones one could ask for. Love that Marshall, Believe it
Have had the DSL40C for 6 mo.now, Les Paul Studio, Burstbucker Pro's. The variety of tones is mind blowing! From AC/DC, Zeppelin, 70's rock et. al. through Metallica, Exodus, Testament, Slayer no problem out tha box! Vol. 4 (ultra gain) your ears ring if your standing within four feet of it. For the price, no brainer.
It's for running time-based effects like delay or any other kinds of effects that you don't want the tone or signal to be affected by the preamp. Here's a basic layout of the signal path: Guitar->input->preamp->FX loop out->delay pedal->FX loop in->power amp->speaker.
I was thinking in my head "PLAY SOME FRUSCIANTE, I DON'T WHAT ERA!" and then right after that though left my head, Rob started to play readymade at 18:45. I'm crying
I have compared many amps and I must admit Marshall speaks to me the most. Maby because most bands I've listened to and I like use Marshalls.. This is the sound I like..
That's cool man! It's just something I noticed. Keep doing whatcha doing, it's all good! :) It's pretty cool to see how Lee improved his playing throughout the years too, he's getting to be quite the blues player! :)
Thanks buddy, I appreciate the response. Also been looking at Egnater Rebel 20 head and cab. I borrowed a friend's Fender Blues Junior, a 15-watt 1x12 and it's LOUD! The 40C might be a bit much, after all. Having 20 watts and the ability to turn the wattage down might work better for me...not sure yet...still doing the homework before I drop the money. Thanks again for the feedback!
In the DSL40C owners manual it states to be sure to put the amp in "standby" before switching from pentode to triode and vis-a-versa. Don't do what Lee did at 24:05.
My neighbours love all the tone i get out of my dsl40c!

***** Definitely the Blackstar, but I would upgrade to the 40. Better clean headroom and it has the voice switches.
Or if you're looking to get a head, get the HT 50 head. It's just like the Club 40 but 50 watts and it's a head.
+metalmusician6798 thank you!!
I have been waiting for your demo guys thanks chapman .
i noticed you played some bryan adams there. please understand that bryan adams is not from the usa, he's from Canada, and Canada has apologized many many times for this.
flyinbryan1619 Is that last line a South Park reference?
Couldn't have picked a better video for the 1000th than the DSL! Personally, the best amp I've ever heard. As soon as I have the money then I'm getting the 40C
With all due respect for Chappers and the Captain, I don't believe that the Les Paul used for this video is making justice to these Marshall amplifiers.
agree. At least a Gibson LPJ. That Epi sucks.
Agree. I play both my Gibson LP Standard and Explorer into a dsl40c and they sound amazing!
yeah, it doesn't seem to stay in tune very well..
i love how most of their videos are around a half hour long it just goes to show that they are the best reviewers on youtube!
heres a secret: the dsl is the best amp that marshall have ever made
hahaha
xXTHRASH OR BE THRASHEDXx it's so versatile it's great. Wouldn't buy it, there's amps I like better but yeah
You're right, it is a do all amp and the price cant be beat. Too bad they're not UK made though for the extra reliability. I heard they end up in the shop too often with electronics frying out etc. Then again you got Gary Holt from slayer using these live so idk, I suppose once the bugs are worked out. Very tempting at that price.
xXTHRASH OR BE THRASHEDXx plus the distortion channel slays the JVM and jcm
I agree!! I love my DSL40 Vintage!! Looks great and sounds great!!
I just got the 15H for Christmas, and am running into an AVT 4x12A, and love the classic gain channel....doing Allman Brothers,ZZTOP,SRV, and running this in stero with a super reverb. Unreal tones!
could you guys show the schecter synyster gates hellwin amp?
That Les Paul on the back, shines literally.
Who else was waiting for the Stair Way to Heaven solo and became disappointed?
me
I have the DSL15C. It's freakin' killer!!
Is the 15 watt combo loud enough for band practice?
Yes it sure is. :)
depends..if its 15 watt from a tube amp, then yes, so loud in fact you could easily small-gig it...now, 15 transistor/digital watts? not really loud and punchy enough for anything other then practicing only...enough to maybe keep up with a very soft drummer in a very small room..
Pe Peroni I currently own a Roland 40GX, and I really want to switch to a tube amp. Would the 15c be able to surpass the 40gx volume wise? Also is it worth it to just fork over the extra 100$ and get the 40c? Thanks
FreshBagelz
15w tube and 40w transistor are somewhat comparable, but since the 40gx has a relative small cabinet and a smaller 10 inch speaker, and the cabinet from the 15c isnt only bigger but its loaded with a 12inch speaker, the 15c will def move quite a lot more air then the gx..also remember the fact that its not only about volume and moving air, its also about articulation..transistor amps articulate the better the lower you turn it down, tubes are the opposite, the higher you cranck it up the better it gets and the better it responds ands sounds...unfortunately the best advice i can give you is to test one out, which is what everyone else would say...about the 40c..well, yes its def going to be louder, but then remember what i said about articulation...if the tube amp is too powerfull it might not work for smaller applications like practicing or smaller gigs, since you have to cranck it up to get a good tone out of it, but then 40 tube watts crancked up is pretty damn loud..
Pe Peroni Alright thank you for the help!
Much nicer sounding than I expected. Nice demo.
Foot on couch.
-can the dsl40c can be use on 20w mod at bedroom volume?
-will the dsl15c or dsl15h be heard in a band rehearsal?
-I'm gonna be perfectly honest: I have the 15w version and the switch hardly makes a difference; it's still pretty loud for bedroom practice (unless you use an attenuator).
-It definitely should. As I said, I have the 15w version, and it's plenty loud, so it should definitely cut through in a band (if necessary though, I'd try running it through a 2x12 or a 4x12 cabinet to boost it). If you are in a serious band though, I'd probably pay the additional $100 and spring for the 40w version, but the 15w is definitely a worthy amp too.
metalmusician6798
thanks any other advices?
Wild-Will The 40w is technically better because it has the Boost buttons for each channel, a Resonance knob instead of a switch, different reverbs for each channel, and an FX Loop. Though the 15w will work, I'd definitely get the 40w version if you're in a serious band.
metalmusician6798 Marshall, being Marshall, still suffers from Marshall syndrome. For the best, you need to get at least a 40w / 100w amp.
I've just bought the combo and a Marshall MX 112 cab - sounds awesome - well done Marshall
What is song chappers plays around 20:40 min ?
I guess its Lenny Kravitz feat. slash - Always On The Run
Sergio Junio thanks :)
Sergio Junio any idea about 10:25? Sounds familiar.
No idea sorry
Changing strings on a guitar just out of the box, drinking coffee, and listening to rob and lee demo shit in the backround = ultimate friday
And now we live in a world with Kempers.... damn it....
Night Beard and?
Some make it a point to buy American whenever possible just out of principle.
Grand Lenox that's just wiring though
you guys are the best!
you just have a video of every guitar or amp in the world !!!!
chapper, cpt lee i love you
epi sounds horrible, muddy as shit on every position
Mox_au That's what I've found with every Epiphone Les Paul I've played, so I settled on a PRS SE Santana!
Mox_au I wanted to buy an Epiphone guitar,as first guitar.Settled on a '56 ebony with p90's.Now replacing the p90's with high-output humbucking ones.
Define muddy please
+she succ me low output, not bright and lacking treble and attack.
turn the treble up haha :D
ive been waiting for this!
Less talking. You guys spend entirely too much time blah blah blah...
All this time I've been searching for the perfect amp, avoiding Marshalls because of the high-gain tones I had heard out of them in the past, and now I come back to this video, listen to the DSL40C and think "That's the one! Goddammit that's the one!"
no effects loop... thats bad
It does have an fx loop
too expensive to not have a fx loop
I never use the effects loop on my amps, they suck for pedal effects and rack effects sound dull through the loop.
you can be the only one, i use a loot
What do you mean, "you can be the only one"?
Love how you play the One riff and then finish it with Hangar 18!
@MrCoolhandLucas I wasn't playing Gary Moore - covers are not allowed, it was an "in the style of " thing
Love that Marshall, Believe it
Been waiting for this one!! Finally :D
Captain Lee has the best blues chops I've ever heard
Have had the DSL40C for 6 mo.now, Les Paul Studio, Burstbucker Pro's. The variety of tones is mind blowing! From AC/DC, Zeppelin, 70's rock et. al. through Metallica, Exodus, Testament, Slayer no problem out tha box! Vol. 4 (ultra gain) your ears ring if your standing within four feet of it. For the price, no brainer.
It's for running time-based effects like delay or any other kinds of effects that you don't want the tone or signal to be affected by the preamp. Here's a basic layout of the signal path: Guitar->input->preamp->FX loop out->delay pedal->FX loop in->power amp->speaker.
that marshall sonic scratch sound is addictive
I was thinking in my head "PLAY SOME FRUSCIANTE, I DON'T WHAT ERA!" and then right after that though left my head, Rob started to play readymade at 18:45. I'm crying
40 Watt combo is so awesome!
Les paul + marshall always has and always will be a match made in heaven!
Janick Gers, Dave Murray, Adrian Smith (Iron Maiden) Marshall, heavy gain sound, Strats. :D
I play everything from dire straits to megadeth on this amp and it sounds great.. Very versatile indeed
i liked the sound at 9:30.. nice sound! thanks for the video !
I own the 15 head and I was pleasantly surprised with the clean tones. I personally prefer a clean sound with just a hint of overdrive.
No prob. Mine should hopefully be here in a week or so... can't wait!
I love the A Team theme....cracked me up
I have compared many amps and I must admit Marshall speaks to me the most.
I have been waiting for your demo...really interested in the 40c....now i really want it. thanx, from Canada eh!
Thanks for the review guys! Awesome stuff!
Don't do what Lee did at 24:05.
the 40c seems amazing and fun
You are so right, absolutely agree
Wow, thanks , that was really helpful. I finally found a shop near me that has one, tried it out and I loved it.
Hey. New fan here from the states. This channel rocks!
