We impose limits on ourselves so as to not get "too out of hand" with each other. Because, the act of dehumanizing each other to the point that we don't care what happens... at this stage in our development, means we could destroy our entire species without a thought to the consequences. I suspect that once we're no longer limited to our own planet... "atrocities" will only exist as "rendering habitable and valuable real estate uninhabitable, because nobody wins there".

The rules of war are not for the dead, but for the living. How can there ever be peace with the memories of what has been done or done to you? There are limits, because without them the living would be monsters after the war.
Also, for both the victors and the losers, such that the war doesn't need a sequel, if possible. If the victors are nothing more than monsters, it's only natural to go and hunt them down. Likewise if the losers are only monsters. But if both victor and loser are men, honorable and proud, then the soldiers of each side can sit down together for a beer afterward and shake hands.
Reminds me of a history lesson, the honor system of one nation said "being taking prisoner is the greatest dishonor", while the other said "wasting lives in a suicidal last charge with no chance of victory is dishonarable since it shows that you don't care about any human lives" and stuff like that. So when one side surrendered because they were facing certain death, and the other suicide charged they were seen as monsters who didn't value any life, each saw the other as unhonorable savages.

Fight to kill or wound so badly the enemy can not continue. Go into combat that isn't in a tournament with some notion of fighting fair only if you are 100% certain your opponent has the same moral code as yourself. If you live you have the luxury to feel guilty afterwards if so inclined.

One of the most glaring examples of such is the United States' decision to utilize atomic weapons in response to the Japanese unwillingness to regard some of these principles, one of those being treatment of POWs. In conclusion, disregarding Terran principles of war is a counterproductive trait subject to being removed from evolution with extreme prejudice.

They were dropped to force Japan's surrender in order to reduce casualties, especially allied casualties. It had little if anything to do with Japanese war crimes.

I am not saying it is uniquly Western nor American, only that being "carful" is the domain of great powers that know they need not be "brutal" untill of course they do. The US treatment of MOST german and Italian POW's was good and far better that that of Soviet POS's does but there is still many instances of mistreatment (the exeption not the rule) Go back 100 years it gets a lot more gray go back a few more centuries or just to a differnt culture, things change greatly.
