As Javier said "Who deserves what, is subjective". Figgy is a former champ that beat a top 5 fighter, a top 10 fighter & a former BW champ. Umar is undefeated & has one W over a ranked (top 5) opponent. I don't care who gets the next shot, but Umar's team & fans need to stop coping& pretending it's unreasonable to argue that Figgy deserves the next shot over Umar. Either guy has a strong case for it. Which side people take, comes down to what they value the most or give more weight to & who they're bigger fans of.

So all the contenders are ducking him, what is he supposed to do? Retire? and what is the UFC supposed to do? Shelf the guy and not let him be a star? Get outta here man. That's why Cory is a legend for taking the fight and I will forever be a fan.

Sean O'Malley had a much worse resume and lost to Yan. Sean Strickland didn't deserve a title shot, Chito was undeserving, Roundtree is undeserving, Peirera was just as deserving as Umar if not less, Colby was undeserving, Gane was undeserving the 2nd time around, Jorge was undeserving.... I mean come the hell on, why does it even matter in this particular case?

Or they have an extensive history in other divisions, like a multiple time kick boxing champion, give him a test against a top contender(preferably a wrestler). If he smokes them, he’s earned a title shot.
Based off your comment I assume you are advocating the champ to fight the number 1 contender in the division. And that is Umar as per the rankings. So your own comment goes against what you are implying.

It wasnt even spectacular how Merab took the win. Winning by wrestling is like scoring a goal and just holding the ball passing each other so the opponent team cannot take the ball.
Remember, its way easier to shoot on a takedown than it is to stop a takedown.
It is WAY easier to distribute your weight and hold someone down than it is to get up when someone holding you down.
Wrestling is effective at holding down your opponent, but its not really a fight, because in a fight, you are suppose to aim to deal damage upon your opponent.
I like the old MMA, when lay and pray fighters would be given a yellow card and lose a point if they didnt actually fight and just layed and prayed the whole fight.
All while you sit on the couch with a bag of Lays potato chips & fingerprints all over your device.

In my opinion, if a contender avoids or ducks you, then you have the right to surpass them. You either fight or give the person you ducked the right to surpass you. That's what's going on with Umar. Those usually equate to good fights. It typically means that there will not be any positional wrestling and will result in more striking or attempts at submissions. You are talking like an expert so I assume you knew this already

newly ranked contenders should only fight up the rankings until they lose, then it's a toss up if they defend their spot in the ranks or challenge up the ladder. keep in mind tho most of that shit is done by Mick Maynard, fighters basically can only agree or disagree to what the UFC presents them with.

He didn't need to fight Drew Drober at 55 two weeks after Charles Jourdain at 45, but he did it & stopped both. There's a whole Georgia v Russia rivalry and the Khabib Klan have been making fun of Merab for a long time. The UFC has done everything to keep Merab from getting a title shot including making the excuse that he didn't want to fight Sterling when the fight was never offered and there was never a time when Sterling didn't have a fight lined up against a big name and was looking for a fight. Even before Merab got the belt all the talk about "you have to fight Umar next". He gets the belt and can't even enjoy it because they are asking him about Umar in the cage. The UFC will now try to make Merab fight a fast turn around fight against Umar. I don't blame Merab telling Umar to earn it the way he did.

I'm confused as to why so close to a potential #1 contender fight Aljo would be sparring at that intensity. I also have to blame his training partner for doing that as well. As a training partner your job is to give your team mate, who is preparing for a fight, good reps without injuring them. Watching that clip it reminded me of the time Gastelum got cut really bad by his team mate throwing a spinning attack. I get that accidents happen, but that was completely avoidable.

Suga needs heavy work on his takedown defense that's probably why he was a little gun shy in unloading like he normally does.I believe he realized that after the first and second takedowns by Merab He had no answer for it and you could see it on his facial expressions while on the mat.
Takedown defense is maybe a lost art these days with fighters in the UFC and something the old school fighters did it better. Takedown defense is not 100% effective by some of the best at were GSP, BJ Penn, Daniel ,Cormier, Lyoto Machida, Bones Jones, Gleison Tibau.
