Crystal Lake Mine and the best Peristerite around

- we visit Crystal Lake Mine, both the actual tunnels and the beach in our search for mineral specimens and find the best peristerite around. it has a strong blue schiller and is speckled with smoky quartz crystals. In my experience it is the beach dump at crystal Lake that really delivers and the mine is good for seeing graphic granite, peristerite in-situ and also uranophane seeping down the walls.
I like the explanation of the minerals, it takes it a step further then all the other rockhounding videos

Last time I was in that mine with a geiger counter, the radiation levels were 500+ CPM if you were wondering. An Xray is about 50,000 and regular background radiation is about 10-30 CPM so I would say its not bad but definitely not somewhere you'd like to hang out in for more than a few minutes.

That is actually Labradorite.
Feldspar is such a varied and complicated gemstone species though, I think they should make it more simple by calling it "Moonstone" if color and schiller come from the perfect cleavage sides, and "Labradorite" if the color comes from the imperfect cleavage sides. Instead, they mix everything together and make it confusing.
This definitely looks like Labradorite though, which is found in Canada in green translucent Feldspar.
Also, I've noticed that in different types of feldspar the Schiller effect comes from the flat layers of different variations of feldspar stacked together along the main cleavage plain, and the blue green purple and other colors in moonstone and labradorite shows from the sides along the sides that fracture and dont cleave, perpendicular to the main cleavage plain.

Excellent video! I was thinking about visiting this very interesting looking site but I remember reading about 'high radiation levels' inside the tunnels. Do you think that is a legitimate concern for an approximately 1 hour visit? Did you take any readings while you were in the mine?
And I've also heard that this is a beautiful area to visit.

Quick question...does peristerite always flash blue somewhere on the rock specimen, or is the color sometimes hidden inside and you need to break into rock to find the flash somewhere...?

Thanks for taking back there and revisiting this mine. Curious.. is there any pegmetite or other mineral occurrences on surface around this mine? I've also wondered how the old prospectors found places like this as well just walking through the woods, their dedication was above and beyond. There must have been some indication or vein on surface that caught their eye.
That is a good point about the visual. I know the 1950s was huge for radioactives exploration in this area. There are a lot of small mines, but they were soon eclipsed by larger more easily mined deposits.
I would love to start rock hounding but being in southern Ontario I don't think there's many places near me that I could check out. Any recommendations?

@@Caver461 There's gold in Lanark, althought my uncle is a geologist and mining engineer once helping the Russians with their gold mines and he never heard about it. In Lanark there's also Amethyst, red corundum (ruby) probably opaque, and galena. I found large quantities of a blue mineral in the Lanark Highlands, maybe blue quartz, undeveloped kaynite or apatite, or mica behind the quartz? can that give it colour?
@@artlover5798 Actually come to think of it there are a few abandoned gold mines and Bannockburn had a gold mine up until recently.

I’ve been there! That’s the first mine I ever explored, I still have a shiny gray/blue sample on my bookshelf. I’m not a geologist or anything so does anyone know how radioactive is it exactly?
Peristerite isn't radioactive at all to speak of. It's got this same flash of blue?
Sounds like you have some of the marble from the start of that mine. not radioactive. The bright yellow is the radioactive material.
I have a peristerite site near me but NOTHING like that!!
We are very fortunate in Ontario, but I'm seeing an increasing number of good possibilities south of the border as well.

Please help me locate grandidierite and serendibite in newyork state...they are both in the same location...Johnsville. Ny state and madigascar are the onky spots on earth with gem quality stones of grandidierite and serendibite. So they must grow together...
