25-Year-Old Soursop Trees in the Florida Keys (Part 1 of 2)

  • (Part 1 of 2) We finally got the chance to take a fruit hunting trip down to the Florida Keys & are still floating on cloud nine from all the incredible places & tropical fruits we were able to explore. This first stop at Beth Kaminstein's private estate was one of the most memorable & awe-inspiring locations we have ever been. Between the cool history of the property, to the architecture, to the massive fruiting trees - this beachfront home & artist studio was indeed a big ol' X on the treasure map.
Beth was one of the coolest people we've had the pleasure of meeting & we are so thankful that she shared her fruits & stories with us, so we can share it all with you. We have a little regret over not filming her artist (pottery) space, so if you are interested in seeing her work - you can find it on her website/gallery: kaminsteinclay...
Up until this visit, we were a little doubtful of the hype surrounding the Guanabana/Soursop fruit. All that we really knew about this tree was more in line with the medicinal nature of the cancer-fighting leaves. But, after hearing from multiple people who claimed that the flavor of this fruit surpassed many other tropical fruits - we were doubtful. That is... until we got to try it for the first time! The complexity of flavors completely blew our minds & we are now in the lifelong Guanabana fan club too!
Stick around for tomorrow's other half, where we get to visit the other fruits at her homesite, talk about rain collection, the history & the smart design of this one-of-a-kind property & home. This might be our best drone footage to date, too!
What an inspiring way to live! Thank you for your hospitality, Beth! (Plus, a big thank you to Erica Klopf for the introduction!)

I love this fruit. In Somalia we used to make them juice and sweets in Somalia we call them, anuuni, and at my grandmother farm we have this fruit and pink guava side by side. The smell and test is unbelievable. And if you mixed guava and Anuuni together, and make them like fruit salad, it tests heaven in this World.

Soursop ice cream is really nice. I remember eating these right off the tree when I was a kid, that is if the insects and birds didn't get them first. The young leaves are good to make tea, it helps you sleep.

Our soursop is about 12 feet tall now. I bought it at Fruitscapes on Pine Island and I’m getting the little yellow flowers all over it but no fruit yet. It is probably three years old I bet it was two years old when I purchased it. Can’t wait. My wife and I are looking for more acreage in South punta gorda or North Fort Myers now we want to grow more.

We planted one here in Orlando Florida and it's doing well, it is small about 3 feet tall. So we still have a long way to go before we get fruit. Great video by the way. I enjoyed it.

In the Philippines this is a all around fruit the country. I love it really ripe and blend it with fresh milk and half spoon of white sugar and put in a freezer in a pitcher. Give it like 30 mins and walla! The taste of freshness !

I grew up in the Dominican Republic and we had a guayaba and guanabana tree. We definitely did nothing to the trees at all and they produce fruit. Well, we did had chickens that run around so maybe the poop was some what of small fertilizer. But I love guanabana, it has being a long time since I had one.

We have a a sour soup tree that grew on a sandy soil. It is now fruiting since last year. But the fruit is dropping before it gets mature. Now it's fruits that we get is not that good. Though it looks mature but when we open it. Half and even more of the fruit is hard and not white colored but darker -brown to violet to black

I've had one of these in the ground for about 3 yrs now, and never gets fruit. My leaves get brown tips and yellow sporadically, with some kind of spider I can't seem to get rid of. If you have any tips on why its not budding or fruiting, please let me know! Thanks for the video. My tree is only about 8 ft and 3' wide. Maybe I'm not watering enough. What do you fertilize with?

This fruit has anti-cancer. I didn't know, maybe that's why in some places where people grow this fruit have less cancer patients, wow a lot of people in Africa don't know what they have. And, thanks to educate me for this fruit.

Awesome! I guess I need to move to Florida to experience all this wonderful stuff! My mom at 83 has lived in Florida for some 15 years (moved from Michigan and the agro cropping) and has not experienced the local fruits. I scolded her and told her how can you live in an area with so much abundance and not experience the great flavors. She is a snow bird and I have tried to teach her. She helps at a local food coop for the low income. She does not know what most of the food is or how to prepare it!!! More education is needed. My mom is in Arcadia, Florida!! To dumb to know how to prepare food that is given to them for FREE! Please help educate these folks!!!

They want neglect because they grow in ravines in the drier parts of rainforests in the tropics between a specific altitude range. The season is year round. This area is the cutoff for being able to winter without protection.

Soursops, custard apples and the whole family have proven to have anticancer properties. I hope l get to retire in the keys someday. All the best to you all and God bless America!!!
