The M1911 (also called Automatic Colt Pistol [ACP] or Colt 45) is a single-action, semi-automatic lock-in pistol, with short barrel recoil loading. It was the pistol of the United States Armed Forces for 74 years, from 1911 to 1985. Civilian models and most models delivered to the United States Forces were manufactured by Colt's Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company, Hartford, Connecticut . The M1911 is one of the rare weapons to have been used massively during the two world wars.

Argentina was the first foreign user of the M1911A1 in the form of the Colt 1927. The differences between the M1911 and 1911A1 concern among others the shape of the hammer (hammer, which has been simplified), a milling on the carcass at the rear of the trigger guard to facilitate access of the index finger to the trigger tail (for this same purpose, the trigger has been shortened), the housing of the hammer spring has been rounded and checkered or even striated (to allow a more instinctive shot because some people in this exercise were shooting too low), the front sight was enlarged and fitted with a sloping rear face, the butt pads were simplified and replaced by plastic (originally made of wood), the tan was replaced by a parkerization (phosphating), the “beaver tail” (rear safety in “beaver tail”) has been lengthened to prevent shooters (always those with large hands) from getting their skin caught between this part and the hammer. Most of these modifications were made mainly for the needs of profitability that a large production of weapons of war requires. An "M1911" is today a rare collector's item of much more careful manufacture.

Designed by John Moses Browning, the pistol was adopted on March 29, 1911 by the US Ordnance Department and began to be manufactured on December 28[1]. The Model M1911 was the US Army's standard-issue weapon during World War I and was then manufactured by Colt's Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company, Remington-UMC, Springfield Armory and the North American Arms Company. Particularly robust and reliable from its first version, it was modernized in 1926, becoming the M1911A1. During the Second World War, the manufacturers of the M1911A1 model were, alongside Colt (421,807 units from 1939 to 1945), from 1941 the Singer Manufacturing Company (500 units in 1940[2]), the Union Switch & Signal (in) (55,000 in 1943), the Remington Rand Inc. which was the first producer (877,751 units) and the Ithaca Gun Company (in) (in) (355,467 units)[3].

The original weapon is exclusively chambered in .45 ACP, a high caliber ammunition (11.43 mm), and operates in single action. The ammunition it employs is a heavy, slow-moving, large-caliber bullet that develops significant recoil for an energy of 49 kgm (477 J) for the standard military load but limiting the weapon's capacity to eight shots (one cartridge in the chamber, seven in the magazine). The M1911 at the base, was ordered by the US Army with the aim of replacing the .38 caliber revolvers by the .45 with a much higher stopping power: the .38 caliber notably harmed the Americans in the 1898 Spanish-American War for control of Cuba. The revolvers of the time indeed, had difficulty stopping the enemy with one shot. The .45 ACP and the Colt M1911 are still an American tradition that has strong supporters in North America. It is still considered by many shooters, law enforcement and special forces military today as the best semi-automatic pistol available.

The adoption in 1985 of the M9 chambered in 9 mm Parabellum to replace the Colt 1911 gave rise to numerous quarrels. Very common on the American civilian market, the Colt has a large number of clones and "custom" versions such as the P14-45, the American Classic 2 or the Coonan .357 Magnum.

In 1991, to celebrate 80 years of the M1911, Colt produced the M1991A1. For this new series, the Hartford firm has decided to start the serial numbers where it left off when it ended military production of the M1911A1.

In the late 1920s, Colt chambered his pistol also in .38 Super Auto (9mm) with a nine-round magazine. These weapons are very popular in North America, the Colt .38 Super Auto equipping the Mexican police for a long time, as well as police forces in South America.

It is a weapon that has the reputation of being reliable and robust. For example, it was used by the Combined Operations Pilotage Parties (COPP) because it was one of the few weapons that still worked even when full of salt water and sand.

Still very widely used within the police or special units and even more on the civilian market, the Colt 1911 has easily exceeded the century of existence. Since the patents expired, the Colt M1911 has been copied by many manufacturers in the United States and around the world.
