Yes please: show a list of key behaviors to train a puppy. My mom has a new puppy and I struggle to put together what she should focus on to train him.

Such good advice! So important to visualize the destination, especially if you're trying to change a behavior. It's not enough to think of getting rid of something, we have to know what we want it replaced with.

I got the session planning checklist. Thank you very much. As one of your students, I am sure I have come across the pdf in class rooms, but never realised how important this is until recently.

I have rescued a 6mo female black nose cur. She was living in a ditch on a busy intersection. That all she knows, just like a skiddish cat. No leash she does get vocal she nips my other dogs ears. We have earned trust but she is high energy and needs positive training. All her basics are gonna need fine tuning. Where do i begin. I have been good at training other pets but this one is independent and high energy.

I love taking videos of training sessions. It is so helpful to see all the little details later on, when you are no longer in the middle of the action. It shows me what to improve... my own timing, position, posture.... 😁

I would rate my last 3 dog training sessions at an 8. I have been in one or more of Susan's programs for the past eight years. I have learned wonderful skills and I have a well-behaved, happy dog to prove it. These podcasts are great! Thanks!

I only have one video of us working. It highlighted the errors I was making that confused my dog. I dont usually do it at home but probably should.

Another great video to remind me of the stages of planning our training sessions. I was SO resistant to taking videos at first. But since I wanted and needed so much advice from the experts on HSTD and Recallers, I got myself psyched about recording and reviewing them. Now, it’s a no-brainer. The phone is set on video for every session. I have been able to discover many environmental and mechanics needs this way. A PDF! Yay! I always need a visual to keep me on track. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge with us. Much appreciated.

I have been keeping a training log for the past year.
The best part is being able to recognize progress. It's not perfect but I'm hearing things from you that I've left out, so many thanks for the helpful reminders.

My last session, probably 8 out of 10. Trying to change my methods to improve my dog's form. Partially successful and ended with a happy dog. But I need to train myself!😘

Thank you for the helpful checklist! I am signed up for an online training class and am floundering about, not understanding when to add the next game, do I drop earlier games when adding new ones, etc. It feels totally overwhelming when asking a question and getting a whole list of videos to watch which refer to more videos. I feel like I need more structured directions. 🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🙇🏼‍♀️

Thanks Susan, this is really helpful. I journal but not in such an organized way. I will start using the check list today. I am teaching my dog targeting and tricks. How many different behaviors to you train in each session (including balance breaks, of course)?

  • @jenniferconkright8603

Would you consider Service Dog training sport training? Would you review each training target at each session? Hand touch is what I am teaching right now with CG and Search. How do I transition these behaviors into, say, pick up the sock?

Okay, start off in a NO distraction environment to set up for success.. BUT how do i set up for success for when dog eventually has to face high distraction environments? Do I keep slowly adding small distractions that my dog is okay with? (EXAMPLE loose leash walking, starting off in a small, plain, boring room in my house. then eventually i want to walk her outside, maybe downtown, passing people-- people with dogs, etc.)

    Excellent video Sandra.
Recently with great sadness I discovered from my husband's mom that she heard that my daughter has two dobermans and since last month the male bit her four occasions when she was eating, we can't visit to eat with my daughter as each time she is preparing food but especially eating the dog becomes very quiet and watches her whilst growling. When she tries to tell him off to leave the table area he has bitten her. I think she needs to get a professional help by training. This has caused issues because my daughter invited us for lunch but we had to refuse but we can't let her know that my husbands mom divulged about the doberman and the biting events. My mother in law told me not to repeat what she told me as she would telephone to report the dog to the authorities. Please help!!

I'm no pro trainer, but she should probably start with crate games and giving the dog a food puzzle toy while she is cooking people food. That may keep him busy for a bit to keep him from getting jealous of her touching the food. Then he can be in a crate while she handles food until he has been reconditioned to not be food aggressive.
Hopefully Susan agrees with me and can add more help.
