Amazing, great information! The tempo , dog trainer jargon, energetic intensity, may be a bit difficult for some dog owners.... Thank you for your offering! I am appreciative
Thank you Susan I’m enrolled in your home school training a rescue puppy. This helps to put the training in perspective. It’s a little overwhelming, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.😊
Your podcasts have been life changing for me and my dog. Thank you! I am a new dog owner and didn't realize dogs don't come knowing all this. And why would they, I didn't even know all this. I am now spending time with my dog every day after work doing games, training and growing bonds. We are both much better for it. I can not thank you enough for sharing these truths
I signed up for crate games so maybe this will all make more sense after I do hands on with my dogs, but there are like a thousand bits here and it isn’t clear the step by step process. 😢 I’m trying to figure this out but not sure I can. There were half a dozen other videos recommended, and in them, more video suggestions. It’s SO MUCH information. I guess I need a simple “Start Here, learn this so you can teach it to your dog; now move on to this” approach. I’m overwhelmed.
Hi, in this episode, Susan explains about how and why we build intentional layers of learning to set dogs up for success. But your Crate Games site includes very specific step-by-step training that you can follow with your dog for great success. Other episodes have step-by-step training, if you share what you are looking for, we are happy to point you in the right direction. Thanks for commenting!
Hello :) I felt this way in the beginning too! and for a while afterwards, but I just kept doing it day by day, and it all unfolds, trust me :) and the more you go along, the more you just do it, the better it gets :) Just stick with it, and you will be amazed! :) xx
Layered Shaping has transformed me from a passive dog owner to one who is able to shape the behavior I want most from - and for - my sweet boy. It definitely is everything you say it is here and it is so much fun! Thank you for sharing so much of your incredible knowledge and expertise with all of us.
Having taken Homeschool for the dogs etc, this is such great comprehensive summary of your approach. I can honestly say that the layered training you teach put the fun and happy back into “training”. The benefits encompass so much more than just training. Personally, I have found your approach not only transformative for dogs, but also for me. It’s so encouraging and a joy to see the dog in front of me eager to play “games”, and not shutting down or bolting to escape a training session.
What this means to me, is another layer of clarity. I am one of your students and when I saw this episode from the first time, way back before I was one of your students (over a year ago now I think), it was a lot to take in! But now, after doing crate games (AMAZING COURSE!), and Home School the Dog, and Pedicure Please, and now in Recallers and H360 - it all makes wonderful sense, and still, every podcast, every time I re-watch a lesson, I pick up on another point because I see how it relates to the next layer that we are working on. It gets more and more rewarding and more fun the more we go along. Thank Dog for you Susan Garrett! Brilliant stuff! Xxxxxxx Much love and hearts! :) Xxxx and paw prints :) Xxxxxx
Thanks for everything you put out there! Been binge-watching your podcast and joined the recallers program throughout the last week to quickly turn things around with our 12 week old puppy. He's doing great but I was growing frustrated with myself for always reprimanding and correcting behavior he really doesn't know or understand - and seeing both the stress and unwanted coping behaviors that created. Now all I need is a little patience, persistence and that "Leash Blower" Power Tool
I love this episode 💯! This made the framework of positive reinforcement training so much clearer to me. I also love all of the recommendations to other episodes that explain certain key points in more detail.❤
Dear Susan, thank you so much, this is a great and helpful dive into the structure and framework of your training programmes 🤩 I’m a student in Recallers and so a bit acquainted with these layers, and yet listening to you describe and explain the concepts this way adds further clarity and understanding, thank you! I’m an early career dog trainer 😃 and a studying to become a certified dog behaviouralist (all in German and Italian speaking contexts only) , and I’d love to implement as much as I can your framework and philosophy in the work with my students. Do I understand correctly, this is something you would allow and encourage (trainers bringing your games and approach to their students? Of course acknowledging the source). One more unrelated question, triggered from your slalom game with Tater at the end of this video 😅: could you please prepare a podcast addressing how you go about fading out target prompts in training? You have already podcasts about shaping targets, but I find for many people me included the question on when and how to get rid of the target prompt is a tricky and challenging aspect. A podcast on this would be a great addition to the target stick/pivots etc episodes and deeply appreciated - thank you so much for sharing all this invaluable wisdom with us all! ❤️🐶
Hi @Elena Alessandri thank you for your lovely note! We've noted the suggestion for an episode, and it's a great idea. The question about fading would be great to ask in Recallers as well (the community forum in Recallers Chat would be a great place) 💙
Excellent episode! Having experienced "Home School the Dog" and "Crate Games", it really does lay a great foundation for conceptualizing your approach to all the different online programs.
My 6 month old standard poodle puppy and I are Homeschool students-- we're about to venture into our first conformation shows and transferring values has been just wonderful! He loves being groomed, he loves being on the grooming table, he loves standing stacked... we are set up for success and I'm so grateful. ❤ We did have an IYC fail the other day-- I gave him permission to "go sniff" and he bee- lined and grabbed a dead snake 😅 But was it really a fail when I didn't know it was there but we'd been working right next to it for a good 10 minutes and I'm sure he knew it was there the whole time and never disengaged to go get it until released?
Novice dog trainer… I would love to learn more shaping. Which one of your on-line courses should I start with? I have a 3 year old Australian shepperd… I am taking a dog training course in Portugal, we use a lot of luring to teach dog owners of course. I recognize in my dog some of the issues you covered about luring because I trained her first with luring and she so dependent on the food to do something… she would do anything if i have food on my pocket but if I dont the motivation to work goes away… if she doesnt see food she wont work for much time. In Agility classes is different… she is motivated (too much) as soon we arrive the Agility field. Sometimes she is so excited she doesnt think 😢
@@DogsThat Thank you ! :) I will definetely enroll its her choice program 🙏 I love to play shaping games with my dog and I used to do it for my dog to learn new complex behaviours but makes perfect sense to use it to other behaviours. Her recall is already very good… is the course designed for any learning level ? Thank you :)
I'm teaching a Rowdy Dog Class and have recently introduced It's Your Choice. Most of the owners complained that their dog's just continued to paw and bite at their hands to the point that it was too painful to continue. I have not had this experience with dogs that I have personally worked with. What would you tell these owners?
So I see that Susan has changed the 5C pyramid to complexity at the top instead of choice. Could you please post a link to a download of the new pyramid? I use it with all my new clients and complexity does make more sense. Thanks!
Hello! I have had my puppy for 7 months! I want to start from the beginning to get the best results for her and I both! In what order is the best way to start your training videos?
Hi Melody! You can follow a specific playlist depending on your needs For example, here's a playlist full or resources for puppy owners: ruclips.net/video/VF_2TRtRpd8/видео.html Here's where you can see all playlists in case you'd like to work on anything particular: ruclips.net/user/DogsThatplaylists
I love this postcast. Really helpfull. I got my puppy so far that she can stay 2 feet from a bird (pigeon) without chasing her. She will still stay and stare at them but if I ask her to follow me or to come she will. Now she started to chase after shadows. I still didn't find a way to stop that as the shadows will keep moving. I am trying to interrupt the behavior with a treat, or play a game but as soon as we are finished, she starts again. What should I do?
Hi Susan, there is so much material to read and learn .. I love it - but! - is there some sort of scope and sequence or a list of possible first steps ? - what should I teach first and then what? Please advise.
Hi @P M, our playlist for puppy essentials is a great starting place, and it's awesome you've started the ItsYerChoice game! Here's the playlist for you - ruclips.net/p/PLphRRSxcMHy2hywpv3Md3HbWWPPbVF8W5
how funny, i was playing the wit wit game with Charlie this morning and he was all happy until I added challenges (tennis balls) and he failed. The challenge was too soon and too much for the little man. What susan said made perfect sense. Susan, you are a genius. ^_^
Hi Kelly! We have links to them in the description of the video, but sharing here with you too. Here's Home School The Dog which is a great place to start: www.homeschoolthedog.com/ And the ItsYerChoice Summit to learn one of Susan's foundational games for free: dogsthat.com/y/iycsummit
I'm from the Netherlands so I hope my English is sufficient. But I wonder how you apply this method with my young dog (8 months) and my 4 year old dog. My young dog bites the old one all day. The old one corrects but it doesn't impress. So now I help him and correct myself, but I would like to see it differently. I've tried everything but I haven't been able to stop it yet. It seems to me that I should not wait until the youngest dog realizes itself (it's your choice) that biting does not yield anything.

OMG! I have the same problem. Tried to have the good things come through mummy by having her hand touch before giving permission to play with the older dog. However, the environment is not set for success because I am in a multi-dog PARENTS household. The older border collie belongs to my aunt, who went through all of Susan’s classes many times. However, my aunt is not interested in helping me create an environment for success for my pup. She’ll allow her dog to enter my pup’s environment and call me to stop my pup from messing up her BC’s fur. So half the time, I can’t ensure that the reinforcement (playing with older dog) comes through me. Hope you have better luck controlling your environment!
I want to get help.. I feel completely compromised, inadequate, unable .... My critters are completely to me. The past fails that I have to remember and try to learn from are, heart completely heartbreaking .
I have had my 10 week old puppy for 3 weeks and am enrolled in Homeschoolthedog. (It's going well) Since childhood my favourite question has been "why?". This episode is sooo helpful. I totally understand the perspective of the dog who, when given a command thinks "what? why?" This episode explains very nicely why the foundational "games" are so important and where they lead.
