      Yes, During the winter months outside, it's nice to have hat, gloves, and a hankershift or Do-rag. "Cloth is so much better than tissue paper." You can use it all day repeatedly and still find it warm and dry. Always Perfectly fine to wipe off or blow the nose.

    I completely agree. I sat with a college guy from my church a couple of weeks back as he explained his confusion over the need to carry a knife. As we talked I finally asked him about a desire to be self reliant and not count on someone else having what you need. Good video.

    I like the comparison to people carrying a cellphone. Young people literally can't imagine not having a smartphone in one hand. I remember, when cellphones didn't exist. And we survived! Knives on the other hand have been in our hands for thousands of years and us having, carrying and using tools like the knife got us where we are today.
    Man, the times I heard people ask me for a knife for this or that.. just carry a knife! A small swiss armyknife will do in 9/10 cases.

    Self defense is the last thing on my list as far as reasons to carry a knife. I think if you carry one for this reason you better be trained in using it for that purpose. I love my Mora;'s for hiking & camping. I actually carry an EDC in each front pocket and a Leatherman on my belt. I also have a Gerber Suspension as well as a Byrd Rescue in my Bunker Gear at the fire station!

    • @RevHiker
      @RevHiker  9 лет назад +4

      as far as self defense goes, I have never had to use it that way, and seriously doubt I will. I would like to use it as a deterrent more than a weapon. Make someone really think before they keep it going. If the worst happened, and my family or myself were being attacked, I will use absolutely anything I perceive as an advantage to come out on top. My dad was jumped as a young man by a few guys and was on the ground getting beaten pretty bad. He pulled his pocket knife and sunk it into a leg that was kicking his head. Fight over. No training needed. I totally see where you are coming from, but self defense is a use for a knife as a last ditch option. I also usually have 2 blades on me, plus a leatherman. Or, my secondary blade is on my Leatherman. Thanks for watching.

    Thanks for making this video and I agree. People here usually thinks carrying a blade is insane but they just don't understand how useful it is. I don't usually carry a folder but I have MTs with me every moment except in no blade environment, like flight. I do carry a folder with me when I need a dedicated cutting tool. Somebody will say a MT will do everything for urban use and nobody ever need a dedicated knife in urban but it is not true. There are too many moments that a MT knife is not being strong enough. MT blade is good for standby when you don't think you have to cut anything, but if you anticipate you have to do some cutting job that day, a dedicated knife is definitely a plus.

    I agree with everything you say, Rev. My father gave me my first knife when I was four years old and I've carried a knife essentially ever since. I carried all through school but, of course, that was before society went nuts over things like that. I've carried everything from a tiny "gentleman's knife" (very small blade and nail file) to the Buck 110 that so many of us carried when I was in the Navy. I carried a Swiss Army knife in a belt sheath for years, and only recently got into pocket-clip knives. We tool makers and that is part of what defines us as a race. A knife is the one tool I can carry all day, every day, everywhere I go and I'd feel lost without one!

    Good video Reverend! I appreciate you trying to educate people. I carry a Swiss Army Knife all of the time and use the tools more than the blade. On occasion, I do carry a pen knife or stockman knife. I got my first knife in my early teens and carried it through high school which was legal at the time. Yes, then almost everyone carried a knife and we respected it and other people. Indeed they were as common as cell phones today. Like you, my knives have helped others and me out of simple and complex situations.
    I remember my grandfather carried a small stockman to church, fond memories. I too have "Sunday" knives which are pretty, yet my beat up Swiss Army Knife usually goes to church with me as well.

    Probably the oldest tool known to man and for good reason. Man has always needed something to cut with..even if just a sharp rock. I work a manual labor job and have no idea how some of those guys get by without a knife. Seems like I'm using mine every few minutes. And being able to sharpen one is becoming a lost art for those who do carry them. I get asked to sharpen someone's knife constantly. We all have to learn somewhere but man...I can't even fathom having to depend on someone else to do it each time. I have that same Mora and actually EDC it clipped to my belt with the sheath tucked into my back pocket. Doesn't interfere with my wallet at all and it's super comfortable, easy to access, and hidden. Made me start leaving my folders at home and freed up my front pocket. I also hunt wearing camo overalls and have that Mora attached to one of the chest buttons using the hole on the belt clip. Skinned a lot of game with it. Can't say enough good things about those knives.

    A few situations I have needed my knife:
    Chopping grass in a tight spot where we needed to set up hiking tents
    Stripping wire
    Hot fixes on electrical wiring in an emergency (before a musical performance)
    Cutting wire which was on fire due to a short (in a car)
    Opening bottles
    Cutting meat on the fire
    Slicing biltong
    Spreading things onto wheat biscuits, etc.
    Prying things while camping
    Cutting out splinters
    Levering stripped screws while unscrewing them
    These are the things I remember. A knife is a super useful thing to carry. Keep it sharp, keep it clean, and learn how to handle it.

    I along with a couple kids at our school bring very tiny multitools to school just incase we need them. I am on our schools robotics team and I can't even count the number of times that I or other members have used a knife to screw something in or to cut a zip tie. They are just great to have. Even though I rarely take my multitool out during the school day, my teachers know I have one on me and have even asked if they can borrow it in the middle of class to fix something tiny. I'm not saying that everyone should bring a knife to school because it usually gets you in trouble, but I do recommend that everyone should have one on them because you never know when you will need it.

    Just got into an argument and blocked somebody on facebook. It is ridiculous even someone member of an EDC page is in favor of a stupid law banning the carrying of a knife, Claiming if wee need to defend ourselves we should gun up. He said he does not find a knife too useful when he carried one. But I, and I am sure majority of you use our EDC knives everyday for countless useful things and not for street fighting, It's a shame so many people associate this useful tool with violence.

      RevHiker to each it’s own, I use my saw & hammer everyday. I just don’t think I could carry them around everywhere I go. What I’m saying you have some RUclips gun guys carrying a knife for their EDC, mostly in urban areas. I bet half of them don’t know why. I can count in one hand in my life I needed a knife that wasn’t readily available, for the most part I have tools at home and tools in my truck. Again if I’m up north camping or doing my outdoor activities yes knife is a must.

    I've always carried a pocketknife. Ever since I can remember. All thru school. Back then most guys had rifles in their trucks. We wern't concerned bout danger. It was a way of life. Everyone hunted, fished and/or farmed. Back then you had an old cheap knife to open oil cans in your vehicle. I carry a 3 blade folder. Not a big one. I dunno, maybe 3 or 4 inches long. When I go fishing or to the woods, I may grab a multi tool. Before then it was an old boy scout knife. I've opened alot of cans with one. It's just an everyday tool you always have. And you can't skin a squirrel with a cell phone. :-)

    Discard the Mini-Grip and replace it with a Delica. The weak Axis-Lock spring will definately fail sooner or later.

    • @RevHiker
      @RevHiker  8 лет назад +1

      I wouldn't ever put money out for a spyderco. The delica has a super thin blade and feels very cheap to me. The Axis lock is very strong, and has never failed on any of my 8 benchmades. An omega spring failure is VERY rare, and since there are two, the lock will still function.

    • @sputumtube
      @sputumtube 8 лет назад

      RevHiker
      Respect your views Reverand but my BM940 failed after just one year of really minimal (peeling fruit, sharpening pencils) use. The Axis lock is weaker because of the flimsy spring(s). When it works, it's excellent but the fewer parts of the Delica encourage longevity. If a thicker blade is more use to you for EDC than perhaps the Cold Steel line might offer more options?

    • @RevHiker
      @RevHiker  8 лет назад +2

      +paul greenwood Sorry to hear about the 940...im quite surprised. I have an aversion to cold steel. I just dont like how they feel, and I prefer my american made benchmades. Im also left handed so the axis lock really cant be beat for me. Its really the only true ambidextrous lock.

    • @sputumtube
      @sputumtube 8 лет назад

      RevHiker
      I guess it all boils down to what use you need the knife for. Delica's and Endura's are both ambidextrous. I have two Endura's with ZDP189 and a sprint run HAP40. My PM2 is all American made (favours right hand carry though) but if I were going to war I'd want a Cold Steel Recon/Lawman with the new CTS XHP steel. I appreciate the brutal nature of Cold Steel (not for everyone) and if I ever want to trim roses then I'll stick with Benchmade. Again...that lock with it's weak spring is a deal-breaker for me.

    The gods didn’t give us claws to slash, rip, and tear, that’s why man made knives. I carry one of those 5.5inch bladed Ti Lites, and boy am I ready to defend myself if need be! My God given right to self defense doesn’t care for anyone’s feelings. Carry something with reach so that there’s no doubt if the time to act ever arises

    Why a knife?
    "A human is a clawless, and furless mamal that uses tools, containers and makes fire".
    A knife is one of the most versatile and "high potential" object one can have on its person (with a lighter). Watches, cellphones, lamps, pens ... are second in importance
    Preference for MTs
    Having just one blade is good, but in my book, more tools is better. I'm a multitool person. MTs can cut, fix, interact, operate, do and undo so many things that I cant even begin a list.
    I prefer multitools for their "MacGuyver" effect aswell. Where I live, when you're drawing a Victorinox or a Leatherman, you became the "non threatening helping goody-two-shoes person" (that I am) and you can do pretty much all you want without any problems. Other knives may cause problems or weird looks.
    I use my knife more than my cellphone, people always ask me "Hey, do you have your knife today?" and thats why I always have one in my pocket every day of the week (and 2 on sunday).

      RevHiker Dont get me wrong, I like single-bladed locking knives aswell, and I have some good ones but
      1 It is illegal in public places here
      2 Chances are people will have wrong ideas about why you carry one.
      so I end up taking only non locking MTs.
      For the defensive aspect; well, I've never been mugged before. I would prefer giving up my keys and wallet than to kill a guy in self defense.

    a nice video, I prefer the tool version either the Victorinox Harvester (great pruner blade), unfortunately discontinued, or the Field Master, a Phillips version of the Huntsman with scissors, saw, large/small blades, etc.
    Both under $40, I have a hard time spending more than 2 hours of wages on a EDC item
    Thus the Leather man Wingman (around $30) and for a good under $30 single blade prefer the Ontario Rat 2.
    Same thing for flashlights, and I use a flashlight more than a knife. Under $30 the Fenix E12 and under $40 my preferred Fenix MC11.
    Again, I seem to find tools that work for my needs, not what is popular but can highly recommend Pruner (hawkbill) blades and a good working carry flashlight.

    Agree! Such a useful tool for a human. But no to defence for me, awareness is a much better tool for that except in extreme cases. If someone is agitated enough to randomly attack you, chances are that they could still go you with ur pocket knife out. Introducing a weapon can escolate the situation and up the stakes. You are trying to call their bluff and there are people who will not stop, will take the knife and 'give it back' to you. Try asking the person if they are ok, if there is anything you can do to help. Maybe you could whittle them a spoon

My dangerous Swiss Army Knife is not my back up cutting tool and stored in my pack. The seatbelt cutter is great for cutting twine on bales of Hay ! Another useful Tool is the WSH Wood Sheep Hook from Tractor Supply that is cut down to a long Walking Cane. The WSH takes a one inch (1") Rubber Foot ! Think you should carry one around ! tjl

    good on you, a knife is just a very useful tool,i use one every day to cut fruit,string ,boxes etc, it is the intention of the user who turns it into a weapon, i believe as you do that to defend oneself you need to have an equalizer to deter an armed attacker and i have heard from people in the real world who when a knife was deployed in defence against an armed bad guy the aggressors backed down and run away. i would recomend that you train in a filipino martial art to enhance your skills with the knife as it will teach you to make accurate and intentional cuts to neutralize an attacker without a lethal outcome. by the way im a convert to islam and i still love and follow jesus . all the best and god bless.

    When I was young, we were allowed to carry knives at school. Our jr. high ag class even gave away a rifle and a shotgun each year, and the kids who won one were allowed to carry it to other classes to show it off, and then took it home on the school bus. The world has changed a lot since I was a kid. I disagree somewhat about the Leatherman. It's extremely versatile and valuable, but as a pocketknife it's not nearly as good as a dedicated knife, at least for woodcraft. For real woodcraft, you need a traditional pocketknife with at least two blades, and three is better. A Stockmen tells any real woodsman who sees you that you know what you're doing. There's something you might try. I ask everyone I meet whether they carry a pocketknife. Despite my thought that few did, I've been pleasantly surprises. At least eighty percent of those I ask carry a pocketknife. This may be because of where I live, but it's definitely the case here.

    • @RevHiker
      @RevHiker  9 лет назад

      +James Ritchie so you base someones skill off what knife they carry? Having a stockmen tells anyone who sees you with it that you have a stockmen. There is no skill level needed to buy one. A traditional pocketknife is nice, but they have their drawbacks. They were used in the past so heavily because thats what was available. I own a few, but I prefer my knives that have a lock. As far as the leatherman goes, it has 2 blades, and a saw, and a file...not sure how a non locking 3 bladed traditional pocketknife is better for woodcraft...unless your idea of woodcraft comes with "looking the part" of an 18th-19th century pioneer. An image made popular in recent years with the help of people like Dave Canterbury. The tools they used got the job done, but there is better equipment now. Otherwise everyone would still be using that stuff. If thats how you choose to do things, thats great. But there's more than one way to skin a cat.

    • @madmartigan8774
      @madmartigan8774 8 лет назад

      I think was more referring to wood carving with the stockman. The 3 different blades gives you a true carver, a general knife, and a third blade specific to your likings. Like always you make a valid point none the less.

    I don't carry, use, or even own a flip style tactical knife. They aren't any good in bushcraft, they're poor at survival, and if you use one in self-defense, chances are you'll be prosecuted. It's easier to get away with using a gun than a tactical style knife. It's even far easier using some like a baton because even though a baton can be lethal, it's intent is to be non-lethal.

    • @RevHiker
      @RevHiker  9 лет назад +1

      +James Ritchie If you dont own/carry/use any, how do you know they're bad? Anyway, I dont own any "tactical" blades either. The fact that a knife opens easily, does not make it tactical. It just means it opens easily, and is more convenient when you only have one hand free. Bushcraft and "survival" situations are much better suited to a fixed blade anyway. Most people arent bushcrafting everyday. Most people need one to cut a few things here and there throughout the day. As far as self defense, if Im on the ground being beaten, Im not worried about being prosecuted, Im worried about making it home again to see my family. I will use whatever means I have to defend myself or my family. Its a last line of defense, but could be the difference you need.
