Another great tip for memorising a language is whenever you go on a walk or even if you do nothing, look at your surroundings and try to name each object in the language you're learning. It really helps a lot because you use your language everyday and that keeps your from forgetting it. ;)
I love studying grammar so much! it makes me feel much more confident when I can do it right, and it helps me memorise vocab by remembering sentences. Everybody learns differently, though.
I relate to the mistake number 4, I have been learning Chinese for one year now and I thought I shouldn't talk with native speakers until I spoke it fluently. But I realized that there was no way to speak fluently if I never dared to speak. Now I'm grad I did because my skills have improved a lot ☺
For #5: When I was studying for my language exam I also had a todo list that included repeating words, doing some reading, translating articles etc. This really helped because at the end of day I saw that I did a lot of things to improve my knowledge. Of course, I use todo lists for other aspects of my life as well.
Approach with the acquistion mindset instead of cramming up content. Brain is designed to retain content based on purpose or functionality. Know the reason why you are doing this or anything else. Keeping the reason in front of you at all times is the most powerful motivator Even woks for weight control or get dates
I strongly believe that we are on the same page and that's exactly what I feel when I am learning new vocabulary in English. So I can't express enough how grateful I am to you for sharing your feelings. I have to say that I love your glamorous eyes. Greetings from Colombia.
I would find words I use everyday and out them into my day to day talk with my coworkers. “I’m hungry” “is it time to go home yet” “I want my salad now!”. I asked a coworker how they were last week and low and behold~ they said “eh it’s this and that” I went straight to translating their statement “questa e quella” I don’t know why but it made me happy I knew it. It was small but clearly it was more than I knew before learning so….gold star for me.
Mistake 8: Yeah it can be very frustrating trying to translate every word you don't understand ("pain reading") On the other hand, reading, unlike speaking, is less natural activity, and therefore reading without understanding anything is not useful as well (compared to watching video content without understanding which can still be useful to get used to the sound of the language and catch words based on what you see). So.. it can be useful to translate some words that appear all the time, and maybe try to read a less complicated book, but definitely not translating every word
Yes, this is very true! I started off reading easier short stories that I could mostly understand. But when I do read more complicated books I have to look up words.
I ordered your $7 workbook for how to create a weekly study plan, and now I have everything clearly and realistically planned out. Thank you for this resource!
While I was watching this video, I was playing with me new 130 Spanish flashcards LOL. I have like 1500 flashcards with English, Russian,German, and Spanish all together. I know it is really exhausting and hard at a point, but I would not say that making flashcards is a mistake. It's really did help me to be better at those languages, The hard part of this is to use all of those words. If you have any helpful idea to memorize words, please let me know. I would like to know what method you use. STAY MOTIVATED AND I BELIEVE IN YOU. YOU CAN DO IT. SORRY IF I MADE MISTAKES IN MY WRITING BUT ENGLISH IS NOT MY MOTHER LANGUAGE. THAMKS FOR READING THIS. GOD BLESS YOU!
Hi Shea!! I would like to share that one of the mistakes I made during the process of learning a language was, translated in my mind when I wanted to say something and that is wrong... as you say, reading, writing, watching (movies, videos) these things help a lot, then grammar and speaking come up naturally. Thank you for sharing your feelings about language learning.
Hi Shea, great video! My personal mistake was also studying like they tought us at school.. lot of grammar exercises, vocabulary lists.. until I noticed that this is no fun and not effective. Then I learned languages more and more the way I enjoy it, by watching movies, reading books, finding a penpal to write with, talking to people who speak the language as much as possible.. and I skipped grammar exercises completely and learn words from context only, no lists. And I progress so much quicker!
About getting a tutor: as the person on the other side, I agree so much! I'm a French language assistant in England, and even after a few weeks, I could see so much progress amongst my pupils. Definitely helpful!!
I am currently trying to learn Italian now, doing Rosetta stone, flash cards, and talking once a week with a friend who speaks it. Very interesting video!
I'm currently learning Portuguese after living in Portugal for 6 months and your tips are great and will definitely be quite useful on my learning journey. Thanks!
I completely agree with the comprehension level vs production level issue. In my own personal experience, the comprehension level improves at a much faster rate than production at first. I too am trying to even out the balance of these two things with an iTalki tutor. Thanks for the great advice!
Yeah the more I've talked with other language learners, the more I realized it's pretty common. But I'm also focusing a lot more on speaking now and I'm really seeing improvement!
Ahh thank you for this video!! I’m always so grateful to learn from others. Ps I wanted to say I love your channel, and you inspired me to share more about language learning on my own channel! I’m learning Italian too (have been for a year now ☺️) thanks so much and hope you’re having a great day! ❤️
I’m surprised I haven’t seen this yet in the comments but duolingo is a life saver. I know 4 languages and Italian is one of them. But Italian is the only one I’ve learnt through duolingo and it’s my favourite way so far; I’m so glad I found it. I don’t have enough money to buy workbooks etc so especially great since it’s free. I find the interactiveness super useful and that it incorporates all 4 skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) and instantly corrects you so you can improve mistakes. I also haven’t done much practice solely on grammar or vocab, I’ve instead just learnt through context and sentences and it’s stuck to memory so much easier. I also know spanish which is helpful since they’re similar. But I do jot all new vocab down in notebooks once I’ve learnt it so I can review later. I also find duolingo doesn’t feel like a chore or schoolwork like going through flash cards or workbooks does, so therefore is more enjoyable. I’m honestly loving it so much and hope to learn French & Polish soon too!
Oh I forgot to add but I don’t solely use duolingo. It’s more a foundation to learn vocab rather than buy workbooks etc. Once I know a decent amount that’s when I started to do extra practice with writing my own sentences, spelling tests, etc. I also find reading Italian literature and seeing what I can translate fun. But my fave activity is by far listening to Italian music and seeing what words or phrases I can pick up, and then searching for the full lyrics and trying to translate them into English, and comparing my answers to the official translation :)
Hey! I’m a spanish native speaker, i can help you with your spanish, and I want to practice my english, french, german or italian, we can do videocalls and I can give you spanish lessons ☺️
I've just began my journey of learning thr Italian language and i feel like your experience with the language will help me a great deal and i like your humor btw 😊
You're honestly one of the nicest people I follow on RUclips. :-) I have been learning Italian for more or less ten months and I felt sooo bad when I booked a lesson with a tutor. But I did it and it helped me sooo much. Another absolutely amazing app is Babbel. I cannot even say how much I love both Italki and Babbel. I use italki for speaking practise and Babbel for grammar which is taught in a very nice and understandable way. Works perfectly. I'm definitely quilty of the mistake number 10 and I definitely should focus more on my own progress and mainly on enjoying the process of language learning. Thank you for another amazing video and buona fortuna con il tuo italiano. :-)
Aww that makes me so happy to hear! I love that you took that step and booked a tutor. I've heard of Babbel but never tried it, maybe I should? Happy studying to you too!
@@SheaJordan Definitely try it. They offer 7 days trial for free. And it's not only for beginners, you can choose a level based on what you already know. From total beginner (or newcomer) to an advanced student. It really helped me with prepositions, tenses, vocabulary,... There are "real life" conversations about topics you talk about and it's really funny sometimes. Definitely worth the money.
You are so amazing. What stores do you usually do your grocery shopping at? Do you ever stock up on water? Can you possibly do some in store grocery shopping videos? It would be awesome if you could show how you do your full shopping trip
I can relate to all these things+ I tend to use inputs(listening ) as much I can. But that didn't help me in any way. So I changed the method to repetitive listening. It gets boring but it works like how we learn the lyrics of a song. I learned passively at the beginning which I can relate to mistake #1.But active learning is more fun and enjoyable. Learning a language my own is something that really excites and fascinates me.
I have had the same practise and understanding with you when I was learning German that studying grammar is paramount and indispensable so I paid my attention entirely in grammar, but I learned quickly when I focused primarily in speaking. Your videos are inspiring and really informative. ☺️ I have to say that you really look lovely today and I admire your beautiful eyes Shea. ❤️❤️❤️
I really appreciate this video and all the advice you gave. I really struggle with comparing myself to others or being compared to others. I’ll have people tell me I should’ve been able to learn Spanish in 6 months and they know lots of people who did that but it’s taking me a lot longer and that’s okay 👍🏻
My mistake was trying to conquer the grammar all at once...and spending all my time mastering grammar 😂 But since watching your video's you got me in the habit of practicing my writing from English into Italian 😄 I am still terrified to do the italki.... your thoughts was my thoughts of talking to a tutor !
I have those mistakes I agree that learning languages through flashcards is hard to memorise new words and even time-consuming. That strategy doesn't work out. Thanks for sharing with us. I'm grateful
It’s so refreshing to see a fellow language RUclipsr talk so openly about their language learning mistakes. I could definitely relate to many of the things you mentioned. Thank you so much for sharing ☺️✨
Thank you Shea! Your videos really inspire me to continue studying! Can you make a video about Hello talk and Tandem, explaining how you use them, what you like about them, etc.?
You really gave great advice in this video. It is amazing, how much insight you gained on language learning by learning Italian. I had to learn two languages to get so much insight like you.
Thanks for sharing. I’ve been learning Italian by myself for the past 3 years but finding time to stay consistent is very difficult. I comprehension is better but I still have a long way to go. I always speak Spanish and while some of the words mean the same thing, they are pronounced differently and there are other words pronounced exactly the same way but the meaning in completely different. Either way, I am determined to stay on course at my pace. I will get the book 👍🏻
Thanks for sharing these! I can totally relate to these, especially not speaking enough or writing. I’m currently trying to learn French and I will definitely be thinking back to this video ☺️ Keep going with your language learning! 😄
Hi Shea! Like you, I am at a B1 level in Spanish. You are farther along in your Italian, maybe you're done with B1 and I just started! I pushed myself to join a Spanish conversation class. My speaking is awful! I can understand a lot more than I can speak. Maybe that's just how it is?
Yeah I think that’s usually just what happens. I think it’s pretty common to be able to understand but really struggle with speaking. But good job joining a class!
Honest to admit but most learning retention is based on making mistakes. In other words don't be put off by not knowing. I write down as many sentences of conversation I had during the day and then interpret it, it's like rehearsing what has been said; this works for me.
Hello!! I have been learning Spanish on my own for almost a year now and I agree with what you said about focusing too much on grammar. The thing is I don´t have any native person I could speak Spanish with so the best way for me to practice and do workbooks and read books. I watched a video where you said journaling in the language is good practice. I would really like to know if you have other tips on how I could put my Spanish into work! Thank you!
Have you tried using Tandem or HelloTalk? Those are both free apps you can use to talk with native speakers! Journaling is great, watching RUclipsrs in Spanish, reading children's stories, etc. I have lots of other videos with helpful tips for learning any language!
Grammar... Yes, when I tried to learn Arabic, there was an online class that started exactly with that (sarf). It did not help me at all. I didn't learn one sentence after a long time period. That was so frustrating.
So it goes from levels A1 - C2 and the simplest way to describe it is A1 (Beginner) A2 (Elementary) B1 (Pre-Intermediate) B2 (Intermediate) C1 (Upper-Intermediate) and C2 is Fluency
Its a really helpful video☺️ do you have some tips how to keep the languange knowledg? If you start to learn a new languange what should we do not to forget the others? :D Its really challenging for me.
Unfortunately I don't. :/ I don't study multiple languages at once. But Lindie Botes is a great polyglot RUclipsr and she has some great tips in her videos!
I feel you! I'm still learning English till now, and I'm still struggling with grammar and tenses Believe me When I typed this comment, I had so much thoughts in my mind Grammar, tenses, vocabulary, conjunction, phrasal verbs, and bla bla bla bla Gosh!!! It's definitely overwhelming I'm still trying to find a way to solve my struggles Can someone give me some tips??? 😭😭😭😭
You did a great job! I know it's really hard. I think for me learning Italian, reading has helped me so much! Read a lot a lot a lot so you can recognize sentence structures and grammar!
The LA Lady is back, I am still waiting for you to practice my italian with you or to do a video on youtube. I still have to send my request on email ahah :)
Hi Shea! Can you share with us some of the books you used to learn italian? (Preferentially books written originally in italian) Thank you and greetings from argentina!
Hi, yes! I actually have a video that talks about my resources, including books, which you can watch here: ruclips.net/video/QlmJGmfQg_0/видео.html And here's a list of some other resources: Italian Books I'm Reading: Il Sogno Che Ho Di Te - Ema Avril Bianca Come il Latte, Rossa Come il Sangue - Alessandro D'Avenia Buy international books at Book Depository: www.bookdepository.com/ 10 Italian Fiction Books to Read (BLOG): icebergproject.co/italian/2016/06/10-books-i-love-in-italian/
I’ve been leaning English my whole life and still learning grammar is hards one I’m tried so bad I couldn’t know what I do right now ldk what’s right or wrong 😅😭🤦♀️
Hello I am Elisa i am italian and I am trying to study english now I am reading every dai 4or 5 page of a book novel pdf n english and I understand whan I read but I have big problem when speake like you now I have book lesson whit italki but I would know if you know of app application where is possibile speake with same one without pay every time....thanks you for your halp!
I'm trying to learn english and I think that my grammar it's some bad. I will try to read and lisen interest things for me. Could it be enough for reinforce this?
Question for bilingual ppl... Is it easier for you to learn third language through English or your native language? I was learning Italian through my native language and the learning went really slow, then (unconsciusly) I switched to learning Italian through English and it was so much faster and easier, shock...
Yeah, I think it works better with English because of two reasons. One is that it's a commonly used language so you might be able to find a lot more stuff in Eng than in your native language. Two is that Eng and ITA have quite a similar base in terms of grammar or pronunciation. Just sharing what I think
yes. I do learn Finnish in my 4th language, which is Swedish, and find it easier than learning it in my natives. actually I never thought about English bc I've found it too easy but I'd say it's easier to pick another than ur native
My native language is Arabic and I'm learned English and French, but for Italian I like learning it on a French base ( like in apps and all, I choose French as a native language cause I think italian and French are closer than English and italian )
Somewhere in the world is someone named Dan and he journals in a blue pencil. haha. When you said mimic sounds, it made me think of the Mimic Method with Idahosa Ness. Any experience with that program or thoughts about it? I find your videos very helpful. I am also learning Italian. You may have answered this in a previous video but did your initial interest in learning Italian come from watching BABY? And lastly, are you part Italian. I am half Italian American so just wondering. Cheers from Idaho.
hhahahahah poor Dan! I actually have never heard of the mimic method and I'm really curious to research it now. I'll have to try it! My initial interest came from when I studied abroad in Italy for 5 months and yes, my mothers side of the family is Italian. Unfortunately my grandfather passed away when I was super young and he was like the last one who actually spoke Italian, so I'm trying to revive it!
random q-Just wondering when you started you blog and YT did you open up a LLC? I'm a bit nervous too. But, i don't like the idea of giving my own ssn to business in the future or if i do like affiliate programs
I didn't open an LLC, no. I'm not sure all affiliate programs require a SSN? Honestly I make most of my income through RUclips, brand sponsorships and selling my own products which all don't require giving my SSN to anyone.
@@SheaJordan ahhh interesting! I noticed sometimes things require tax forms and such- which either u need to give like google Adsense for example use your ssn or your llc's tax id. I guess i just need to look into it more of course. :-). But, it's good in your case u don't give ur ssn online because i think that is not good at all! Although from what i read online people do it when doing different kinds of affiliate programs( like amazon associates for example) that are links and such.
Yesss!!! I agree that the way they teach in school is boring, but I am also learning French and mandarin and I have learned sooooooo much by listening and watching RUclips videos!!! Also, by duolingo, I just think it’s super fun!!!!
@@monceperez4949 I'm also learning French, actually I study in french. Duolingo does seem a funny way though it got to repetitive after a certain point. Right now I'm just into movies, series and RUclips videos
Yes that's ok! A tutor really helps your progress, but it's not completely necessary. Maybe try to use free apps like Tandem and HelloTalk to speak with native speakers.
First of all, I definitely don't think Italy is an unimportant country AT ALL! 😮 I absolutely LOVE Italy, I lived there for 5 months, my family heritage is Italian but unfortunately, my Italian relatives have passed away and no one kept the Italian language in the family, so I'm definitely trying to bring it back! I feel very connected to Italy and I want to do my best to reconnect with the culture and language. 💕
Look first I tell you has been a good choice to learn Italian language!! Second also if you have done some mistakes with your beauty you are forgiven everything!!

Another great tip for memorising a language is whenever you go on a walk or even if you do nothing, look at your surroundings and try to name each object in the language you're learning. It really helps a lot because you use your language everyday and that keeps your from forgetting it. ;)
Great tip! thank you!
I love studying grammar so much! it makes me feel much more confident when I can do it right, and it helps me memorise vocab by remembering sentences. Everybody learns differently, though.
Wow that's so awesome that you enjoy it!
I relate to the mistake number 4, I have been learning Chinese for one year now and I thought I shouldn't talk with native speakers until I spoke it fluently. But I realized that there was no way to speak fluently if I never dared to speak. Now I'm grad I did because my skills have improved a lot ☺
Yes! So glad to hear that you finally decided to make that jump and start speaking!
Some great tips. Thanks. My mistake was trying to run before I could walk. And I ended up utilising Google Translate too much also.
I realize it's kinda off topic but do anyone know a good place to stream newly released tv shows online ?
@Kohen Byron i would suggest Flixzone. You can find it by googling :)
For #5: When I was studying for my language exam I also had a todo list that included repeating words, doing some reading, translating articles etc. This really helped because at the end of day I saw that I did a lot of things to improve my knowledge. Of course, I use todo lists for other aspects of my life as well.
Yes! I LOVE to-do lists as well. They always keep me organized!
Totally agree with you!!!
Thanks so much for always watching and supporting my videos! ☺️
Mistake 8:
Yeah it can be very frustrating trying to translate every word you don't understand ("pain reading")
On the other hand, reading, unlike speaking, is less natural activity, and therefore reading without understanding anything is not useful as well (compared to watching video content without understanding which can still be useful to get used to the sound of the language and catch words based on what you see).
So.. it can be useful to translate some words that appear all the time, and maybe try to read a less complicated book, but definitely not translating every word
Yes, this is very true! I started off reading easier short stories that I could mostly understand. But when I do read more complicated books I have to look up words.
I ordered your $7 workbook for how to create a weekly study plan, and now I have everything clearly and realistically planned out. Thank you for this resource!
Oh yay! I’m so happy to hear that. Happy studying!
I can talk to you in Russian for practice)))
I can't imagine having that many, I can't even handle 100 cards of only Italian...you're doing awesome!!
Thanks for sharing that! It’s good to acknowledge your mistakes. Good luck with your studying and thanks for always watching my videos ☺️
Yay! I love to hear that!
I am currently trying to learn Italian now, doing Rosetta stone, flash cards, and talking once a week with a friend who speaks it. Very interesting video!
Best of luck!
Those were really honest mistakes that was shared and mistakes makes a person to grow and improve more. Thank you for the video 😊
Thank you so much 😊
@@SheaJordan I also liked the colour of your nailpolish 😅🤭
I'm currently learning Portuguese after living in Portugal for 6 months and your tips are great and will definitely be quite useful on my learning journey. Thanks!
Yay! So happy to hear that and good luck with your studies!
@@SheaJordan Thanks a lot..
You have such a calm vibe and im loving it!
Aww thank you 🥰
I completely agree with the comprehension level vs production level issue.
Totally agree!!!!
Great tips! I have repeatedly made mistakes #2 and #4 in every language I've learned throughout the years.
I made so many of these same mistakes! Great video Shea.
Thank you! Yes, I've heard from a few people that they've made similar mistakes. We're not alone in this language learning adventure!
Hah thank you! Good luck! 👍
You're honestly one of the nicest people I follow on RUclips. :-)
I have been learning Italian for more or less ten months and I felt sooo bad when I booked a lesson with a tutor.
Your voice is extremely valid wow
- make a weekly schedule
(reading,writing,listening,speaking)
Yes active learning is super important!
Thank you! Yes, grammar is a lot easier to learn naturally through speaking. Thanks for watching!
I really appreciate this video and all the advice you gave. I really struggle with comparing myself to others or being compared to others. I’ll have people tell me I should’ve been able to learn Spanish in 6 months and they know lots of people who did that but it’s taking me a lot longer and that’s okay 👍🏻
Yes, it's definitely ok! Just focus on your own progress, you'll get there!
My mistake was trying to conquer the grammar all at once...and spending all my time mastering grammar 😂 But since watching your video's you got me in the habit of practicing my writing from English into Italian 😄 I am still terrified to do the italki.... your thoughts was my thoughts of talking to a tutor !
Haha yes talking to a tutor seemed soooo intimidating! It still is sometimes but overall it’s so beneficial 🙌
If you are terrified of doing italki, but wanna try, you could book a class for 30mins or less rather than one hour, in order to get comfortable.
@@AfroLinguo thank you , great suggestion. I will try it
@@amberabrahams6344 you are welcome

It’s so refreshing to see a fellow language RUclipsr talk so openly about their language learning mistakes. I could definitely relate to many of the things you mentioned. Thank you so much for sharing ☺️✨

Thank you Shea! Your videos really inspire me to continue studying! Can you make a video about Hello talk and Tandem, explaining how you use them, what you like about them, etc.?
Great suggestion! I can make a video about that soon!
You really gave great advice in this video. It is amazing, how much insight you gained on language learning by learning Italian. I had to learn two languages to get so much insight like you.
Thank you! 😃
Very helpful, as always. Grazie nini
Aww thank you
Thanks for sharing. I will get the book 👍🏻
consistency and motivation are very difficult, but it's ok to lose motivation sometimes. Good luck with studying!
Thanks for sharing these! I can totally relate to these, especially not speaking enough or writing. I’m currently trying to learn French and I will definitely be thinking back to this video ☺️ Keep going with your language learning! 😄
You're so welcome! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
I write down as many sentences of
conversation I had during the day and then interpret it, it's like rehearsing what has been said; this works for me.
Shea,I like your voice and your speed
Thank you!
Gracias Shea your tips is helfull a mille grazie.
You’re welcome!
Love the weekly breakdown tip!
Thanks!
Congrats on your skillshare sponsorship. I remember you had the goal of doing a particular number of collabs in each quarter of the year.
Yes! Thank you! I was super excited when Skillshare reached out :)
@@SheaJordan I am happy for you. Congrats Shea!! 🙏🙏 You deserve it
Grammar... Yes, when I tried to learn Arabic, there was an online class that started exactly with that (sarf). It did not help me at all. I didn't learn one sentence after a long time period. That was so frustrating.
That’s so frustrating! I’m sorry!
thank you for making these videos there really motivating
Glad you like them!
What do you mean when you say you are at level B1? What are the differences between the different levels?
So it goes from levels A1 - C2 and the simplest way to describe it is A1 (Beginner) A2 (Elementary) B1 (Pre-Intermediate) B2 (Intermediate) C1 (Upper-Intermediate) and C2 is Fluency

I’ve been leaning English my whole life and still learning grammar is hards one I’m tried so bad I couldn’t know what I do right now ldk what’s right or wrong 😅😭🤦♀️
Mistake #1: That's so me.
Yes HelloTalk and Tandem are free apps where you can talk to people :)
My native language is Arabic and I'm learned English and French, but for Italian I like learning it on a French base ( like in apps and all, I choose French as a native language cause I think italian and French are closer than English and italian )
any tips for learning spanish in like... 3 months?
Ahahahahahah, clicked right when I saw you posted!!!!!!
Aww thank you ❤️
Somewhere in the world is someone named Dan and he journals in a blue pencil.
Ahh!! Such nice tips... Thanks for everything. Just wanna know that, What is your mother tongue?
Thanks, I'm a native English speaker.
random q-Just wondering when you started you blog and YT did you open up a LLC?
I always use the way we learned in school to learn a new language and does somehow seem boring, is there an alternative way to learn?
Very nice 👍❤️
Thanks for sharing your mistake. I hope my English skill will be improved.
I think I'm in love 😍
😂👋
💘
Omg hi so early!!
hello! 😊💛
Hello. You can leave English subtitles for videos. This is better.
Thanks.
I will try! It takes a long time to add subtitles though!
Hi shea could nt catch u last few months.♥♥♥
Is it okay if i can't get a tutor?
Yes that's ok! A tutor really helps your progress, but it's not completely necessary. Maybe try to use free apps like Tandem and HelloTalk to speak with native speakers.
@@SheaJordan Alright! Thank you!!
Why have you chosen Italian? We are such an unimportant country 🥺
